Indeed. I was solely expecting Antasma to be the backstabber. I wasn't expecting Bowser, the villain who has been used quite a few times before to be the traitor.
Well, it did seem like Antasma wanted help from Bowser, so to me, I personally would have preferred two of them as the final boss. But thats probably just me.
People who say they wanted the betrayal to be the other way around don't understand the entire point of the game. Dream Team is a story of the underdogs. Luigi's character arc in this game is clear proof of that. He goes from the usual bumbling sidekick to kicking Bowser's ass inside Bowser's OWN DREAM. And Bowser is no different - the entire way through the previous M&L games, Bowser has been treated as the comic relief character. Even in Bowser's Inside Story, where he was arguably the main character, he was still duped and humiliated at every turn. So we naturally expected the same in this game - we expected Antasma to betray Bowser and make him look like an incompetent fool once again. But no - Bowser has had enough of people using him and making him look dumb, so he turns the tables on Antasma and reveals himself to be a smart, competent villain worthy of rivalling the most iconic video game character of all time. Antasma was awesome, but Bowser was shown in a totally new light.
Well, there could have been the betrayal, then antasma fleeing, the dreamy bowser fight and then Antasma as the final boss, and it would still be awesome.

Antasma was an amazing villain. Who goes and starts their battles by putting you in a nightmare full of nightmares, INSIDE A DREAM? Antasma does. This guy was such a threat that even Dreambert helps you. Antasma is amazing
yeah! and he REALLY respected bowser for how powerfull he is in the real world. and same with bowser pre-betrayal. they were the pefrect duo, but plot-plot-plot so are the bros. and they win.

Mario Kart and other multiplayer spinoffs don't really acknowledge canon. So a dead character could appear and I doubt it would be the end of the world.
I find it funny that people are complaining that bowser is the final boss even though its the first time in the mario and luigi series that he is actually the final boss.
Although technically you fight variants of bowser in every game previous, Bowletta in superstar saga, Shrowser in partners in time, and Dark Bowser in bowser’s inside story
By dreamteam logic, he could be revived in someone's dreams if they simply have a dream about him. So in theory, as long as no one forgets his existance, he can return.

What if that's how he returned in the events of the game? The tutorial boss of him takes place in Luigi's dream, so that means Luigi was dreaming about him

Let's look at things from Antasma's view. Alright, was a normal living bat on the Island. Check. Consumed Pi'illo's nightmares and became like that. Check. Wanted free wishes and took the Dark Stone. Checkington. Was sealed away in the Dream World, and before he banished, he went full "I'm-taking-you-with-me" mode on the Pi'illos, petrifying them. (I would be fucking pissed too if I was sealed away for hundreds of YEARS.) Check. *The actual game* Took Peach because of her power. Yes. Met King Bowser and got him as an power partner. Awesome. Took the Dream Stone and filled it with Dream Orbs and made a big ass castle with it. Terrific. Gets betrayed by Bowser and get's his ass kicked by Mario. (Betrayal? By the Koopa King? That's harsh.) And dies an explosive death. So. Yeah.
+Cynthia Kishna Since he was a baddie from the beginning, it would be hard to do it. But I can already imagine Antasma giving health to the Bros in the Final Battle. Would've been interesting.
This track gives the feeling of melancholy, sorrow and desperation. At this point in the game, Antasma has been betrayed by Bowser, and has now returned back to square one, more or less powerless, with the world against him. He has now lost most of what he was fighting to attain, and in spite of this, he wants to take out the Mario Bros out of pure bitterness and hatred, he also vowed that Bowser would soon follow. Antasma was a broken soul who just wanted the world to fade away.

I haven't played the game, but let me just say: I love this. The solo violin sounds so dark and sinister, while the rest of the song is fast and energetic, and somehow the two melt together seamlessly. I might have to get this game.

I know folks are a little ticked that Antasma wasn't the final boss. But thinking of Bowser, he was either tricked or pushed aside of another villain in most of the RPG games, so he actually played it smart here and actually did the betraying before he got one-upped again.
The only thing that ticks me off is how after he's betrayed, he just is like, "We'll fight" and then that's kind of it. I think in this case, it would've been better to see Antasma fly off with a "We VILL meet again!" because unlike Shadow Queen, they did actually show that Antasma had a lot of potential and power to him, but when Bowser betrayed him, we never really got to see the extent of that power. I am glad that Bowser did what he did to become the final boss again since his enemy is Mario and Luigi, not Dreambert (who is awesome!), but we just wish there was more to Antasma instead of killing him off.
Mario Mastar Very true but don't say thay he was killed off because he may return in the next game if they make one that is. If he is in the next one, hopefully he will either be the final boss or maybe a secret character that you can find in the game and you'll get to learn more of his backstory.
Blake Gomez Yeah, you're right, after all, Fawful was clearly seen exploding after getting kicked out of Bowser's castle in Super Star saga, yet you see him again in Partners in Time and he's the main antagonist in Bowser's Inside Story. Nintendo games have a quirky way of making a badguy "all but die". Even in thier serious titles like Legend of Zelda and Starfox, they still manage to bring back villains we once thought were dead. Here's hoping, they usually include secret characters from the previous games that give a bit more bonus backstory, like how Bowser's inside story showed that Elder Princess Shroob is cryogenically frozen in Bowser's Castle. The Shroobs may return, but it's unknown how.
personal points for bowser finally recognizing luigi to be just as much of a threat as mario, maybe in the next game bowser will put a little bit of extra focus on luigi?
Blake Gomez Maybe, in BiS you can fight the shroobs in the giant freezer thing, you can also see a shroob in the theater, and in DT you can see a poster of a shroob in Kylie's office.
Of any villain in a video game I have felt the most sympathy for Antasma... He gave Bowser everything and was loyal to the end with Bowser. He gave him everything to then be left alone to fight the Mario Bros and get killed. The worse thing about it too was the fact that I was doing so great in the rpg that when I did the special bros move against Antasma, I beat him in less than 4 turns. Made me feel even more sorry for him. I felt like he deserved some more screen time during the game as well.
I agree he should have had more screen time, but it was obvious that he wasn't truly loyal to Bowser, if Bowser hadn't betrayed him, he woukd have betrayed Bowser.

I love paper jam, problem is, the paper toad hunts is REQUIRED for progression, meaning you have to constantly do tedious fetch quests to make it to the part where you build a road full of paper roads to make it to neo bowser’s castle
Man, if there's anyone I wanna see in a real Mario game other than the series he's in, it's Antasma. Badass, powerful, manipulating and overall a great villain. Imagine at the end of the next Super Mario Bros., Kamek or Bowser explodes and Antasma fights you. Just....awesome...

I am just gonna get this out there. Antasma has my favorite boss battle in the history of ever. The boss is intense with his ability to steal Luigi, recover health, increase attack, and unleash attack which are insane to counter. Not only that, but he can make Mario enter *SLEEP-SEPTION* which if you screw up your movement is devistating. The setup is really cool with Bowsers betrayal and Dreambert getting *OHKOed* at the start of the match. But... I have special memories with this one. Once, Antasma put me to sleep and I had roughly 100 HP. I was in a sawblade combo which almost killed me. Then, I figured out that jumping over pits can reveal if they are bad or good. I jumped over all of them... Except one which turned out to be the good one. I fell in there and grabbed the Super Mushroom inside. But not counting the heal, once I got out of that I had *2 HEALTH REMAINING.* But that very same try, I destroyed him once and for all with a Luiginary Hammer. In short... ALL HAIL VE BAT KING!
Never forget all your childhood memories you had with this game back then 10 years ish. They’re unforgettable and you’ll all be able to make more currently while we all continue living on to this day.

I really think Antasma should've gotten more of a role in this. Why didn't we get a revived Nightmare Antasma Bowser Hybrid where the Mario Bros. Fight him using the Dream Stone so they can use Dream Luigi's power?
idk, because Antasma can't be physical damaged? :\ Antasma is a Phantom, even his name reminds it. so you should probably use half-physical-magic attacks, like the Bros attacks

I love how this theme has a sorrow undertone to it. Like this is Antasma's final stand. A man who has lost everything in a single moment. It is true what they say, the scariest opponent to fight is not someone protecting their family or fighting with huge stakes. It's fighting against someone who has nothing to lose.

I like this song more than Adventure's end. AE just was to difficult to focus on one specific instrument, whereas this one, you can perfectly tell the amount of chaos with the fast-paced organ, vocals and Techno sound, and the devotion with the violin.
It’s sadder when you realize antasma likely wasn’t going to betray him, he legitimately wanted to have a mutual partnership, and bowser’s paranoia made him betray antasma, making bowser just like those who betrayed him.
What a great way for Antasma to go out. An intense but also downright beautiful battle theme paired with a memorable fight. Also this could've played out quite differently, Antasma was only stopped from coming out on top by a small margin. The Mario bros literally saved Bowser by defeating Antasma before he could deal with Bowser. Seriously, Antasma is knowledgeable about the dream stone and could've played around it. Then we would've gotten some sort of godly Antasma instead. But no, Antasma was too prideful about his feud with Dreambert and wanted to settle it with Dreambert and his friends first.

One thing I love to view as when you first fight antasma in the beginning of the game is that while all of it was Luigi's dream, who we played as was still Mario, a Mario who couldn't take damage from any of antasma's attacks no matter how many times he hurt us. I like to believe this subconscious version of Mario is how luigi really views him, the big bro who can get hit so many times and not even show any signs of being weakened or hurt, a big bro who is invincible and can take down any bad guy. I feel this really shows the love and respect Luigi has for Mario that people may look over from that scene since the following scene is Luigi waking up and comedically running around and falling
Impossible dreamy bowser mode hack (please if anyone is capable please do it): Bowser deals the exact amount of damage needed to kill you in every single one of his 5 turns... if you do NOT dodge at least 81% of all attacks in his 5 turns one of the two bros are guaranteed dead... (or both depending if they both did not reach that 81% mark) counter attacking will heal bowser and shrink the specific bro that counter attacked... and he constantly heals 200 hp guaranteed in every single turn to all of his body... he is also and is amune to all effects and badges PLUS he summons minions guaranteed every 2 turns and *THE ONLY* way of defeating the minions is using a taunt ball... if you fail to defeat the minions in the same turn as he conjured them he will heal his HP to *FULL* and shrink both bros. But he has extremly low defense and max hit per shot is 50 making you only being able to defeat him using red shells and green shells... The shells gets buffed to do exactly 50 damage per hit (green shells have exactly 81% chance on going on the arms) any other attack will *HEAL* bowser instead of hurt him and shrink the specific bro that performed the attack. The dreamy ship will have triple health and wipes half your health per shot! Making you required to at least dodge 50% the shots to live! (Everytime mario or luigi gets hit they will get shrinked only when their turn begins and the shrink will go away when bowser attacks again) (Shrink will not effect anything else and only make it harder for you to time your shells) If dreamy bowser detected any kind of cheat code he will raise his defence as much as neccessary for the damage limit to cap at 50 (depending on how powerful the cheat code is.. the shells still gets the limit of 50 damage a shot and it will only do 50 damage) and he will gain 6000 extra HP making his max health 10k plus he now deals infinite damage per shot making you have to dodge every single attack he makes in all of the 5 turns! You will always be shrinked but your damage will not change and you cannot use a refreshing herb. Dreamy ship will be in distructable and does infinite damage per shot! Watch out :D bowsers hands attracts green shells so you can only damage him with the red shell! Oof! Rip! Heal limit: infinite Conjure limit: infinite Max health: 4000 (10k for cheaters :D) Rewards for defeating him: infinite supplies in everything in the game with congrats letter that uncludes all bowsers stats including his weakness and amunity to effects and everything else (Cheaters gets everything included plus all bros attacks they missed AND all beans and pillows) Dismantle mode: Both bros have permanent shrink and bowsers damage cap is set to whatever number neccessary so you only deal 300 damage everytime only *MARIO ATTACKS* That is because cheater mode conditions is here too! Green shells will be attracted to Bowser's arms. Making you needing 40 turns to beat bowser.. dodging every single attack... and every single dreamy ship attack.. we need a god an actual god of games to attempt this. This mode also gives the minions a huge health/defence increase... making you only have *ONE* pattern to follow and make it exact so bowser does the perfect *EXACT* amount of damage needed to kill all of his minions.. if you fail to do so you will instantly be greeted with *GAME OVER* and you get to watch bowser eat his meat :o In this mode bowser does infinite damage and has every condition "cheater mode" has... aside from getting 10k health.. he will still have 4k health and if you cheat you will witness the final Bowser's rage.. oh and your speed is decreased to 1 so you cannot be over leveled and do multiple attacks :D (Bowser's rage:) Bowser sends you to the dream world and uses his limited one time power and uses all of his dream stone energy to summon all of the enemies and bosses you encountered throughout your journey. Gives them all every single condition above and will have one particular attack you have to figure out by simply looking at the boss's body and perform to be able to beat it.. every boss will figjt you at once so it wont be a 1 boss then another tpye of shiz. Once you somehow someway defeated them all. Bowser jumps in with bowser jr and all of the koopalings surrounding him. Bowser is normal.. you can finally do whatever you want! No conditions! Ofc.. that would be boring.. since you are in the dream world.. antasma is still there.. he will join up in the background attacking both you and bowser for betraying him. You cannot use a taunt ball to beat antasma up. You just have to deal with his bs :D once bowser and the koopalings and bowser jr all gone.. you will begin the true final battle.. giant battle with antasma that is! only this time he uses his last power similar to bowser to summon all of the giant bosses (aside from giant bowser) and put em on hard mode! Everytime you finish up with a fight your health will stay the same! you better not get hit! Once you defeated all of them. Antasma will banish since his stupidity put in his soul parts inside the giant bosses.. (Ik this wont be a thing.. but i love just expanding everything i got and take it to the extreme :D though if somehow in the future something like this would be very well easy it would be a great pleasure :))
All antasma wanted was co-operation with bowser. (Simpley for being stuck in the dream world for who knows how long. Must have been terrible though being stuck like that and all that time being by yourself and waiting for an opportunity to escape. to find finaly a companion/partner in crime, after all that time of lonelyness, only to be betrayed by that partner at the verry end, and dying afterwards by your enemies. ) If only that partnership would have stayed. I would have loved to see the dream team bros fight one more time the nightmare duo with the power of the dream stone in their hands.
+Derp Bowser In one hand you are right. Antasma was also the tutorial battle, and unless it was used for some sort of epic intentional foreshadowing Luigi dreamed of, it would be WAY to predictable... But what Antasma Has that the Final Boss (again avoiding Spoilers) doesn't, is being someone who you don't really know. It triggers an unfamiliarity in the mind that makes the battle with him more intense. What do you thing he's going to do? He's essentially Nightmare Dracula! What happens when I beat him? Does the dream world explode? How strong is he? What are his limits? He sure does have a good army? Although there are much better antagonists, Antasma still did a great job. The Final boss, though slightly different, is someone who've you battled more than anyone else. How is he going to attack? Well, you know by now that he's going to punch and shoot fire at you. What happens when you beat him? You know he'll come back in the next game. He is just... Not intimidating at all.

Imagine first playing Donkey Kong in the arcade, you play as Jumpman, later named Mario, you look at Mario jumping over barrels to save his girlfriend. Then 30 years later, you see the same plumber that you saw jump over barrels fight the Lord of Nightmares and a giant colorful turtle that can change anything with the raise of his hand, all to save a princess that only gives him a kiss on the cheek.
Peach isn't just the Princess, y'know. She's also one of Mario's dearest friends, he genuinely cares a lot about her. He probably doesn't care for any reward and does it because, y'know, he actually WANTS to rescue her on his own will?
It would be funny if popple just snatches the dream stone from bowser before it got destroyed and then gain it's power. But that's probably a stupid idea...

Segastar1 I bought the game this week and am absolutely loving it so far. And I thought Bowser's Inside Story was good. This is definitely better. Reached Mount Pajamaja last night. Am looking forward to finishing the rest of the game. One of the greatest RPG's I've played. And one of the best 3DS games.
He might be based off him. Only difference though is Nightmare is a lot more powerful. Antasma needs to feed off dream energy to get more powerful as he is generally more of a nuisance without it. Now if Bowser formed an alliance with Nightmare and Bowser tried to betray him it definitely would not go well and Nightmare would flat out annihilate Bowser for even thinking that.
warioland523 Antasma needs the Dream World to be so powerful, but Nightmare CONTROLS other people's dreams which Antasma seems completely unable to do! That's the best proof for Nightmare having more power than Antasma^^ By the way, you already mentioned some other facts that prove the same thing, so thanks for that^^
When Bowser inhaled the lieces of the dream srone and became "invincible" I hoped that the bros would use one of the dream stone fragments, so the final boss would be extreme power against extreme power. Mario and Luigi's "Dreamified" powers could directly interfere with Bowser's. (If bowser made an airship, the bros could conjure up a defense to it.) i thought that'd make the battle fairer and cooler.
I finished Dream Team and the game overall was excellent the boss battles were fun to fight and I love the soundtrack. All I can say is that this a game worth your time. By the way I died 3 times when fighting antasma and in total I got 4 game overs the other one was from two piranha plants.
Dyoxide I HATED giant bowser, I could defeat him just fine but what screwed me was the part where you had to dodge bowsers fireballs was impossible for me, the tilt controls would always somehow switch around for me, holding it left makes Mario go right and doing the same thing a second later makes Mario do what I’m doing. I eventually just deleted the game for more room on my 3Ds because that FINAL fireball was like a scene that makes a No hit gamer take a blow that is unavoidable
Even Morales overall bowser was stupid to betray antasma like that. if they both teamed up again and powered themselves up with the dream stone. they would have easily been a better force for the bros
As stated before, in every M&L RPG, there's always an upgraded type of Bowser. Maybe Nintendo and/or Alpha dream wants to keep that twist in the series.
Marcus Ramirez In Bowser's Inside Story, there isn't an upgraded type of Bowser that we fight unless we are going solely on that each game, Bowser gets upgraded in some way. (Bowletta in Super Star Saga, Vacuum Block/Giant Bowser/etc in Bowser's Inside Story, Dreamy Bowser in Dream Team) Can't speak for the Partners In Time because I haven't played that one. =(
Many don't like mario and luigi dream team bros. But it was my first mario and luigi.. Of course nostalgia plays a big role.. But i just love this game. The music is perfect.. The game looks perfect... Just incredible. My opinion.
Bowser probably saw a betrayal coming and beat Antasma to the punch. Remember he's Mario's archnemesis for a reason. Bowser was just having an off time due to competition constantly appearing. He never crossed paths with Cackletta until she possesses him, Fawful legitimately duped him to get the Dark Star, present Bowser never ran into the Shroobs, but after Fawful he quickly suspected Antasma to try the same. So he pulled the double cross first.
