This is definitely the most unique puzzle I've ever played in Mario Maker. I LOVE it! I would love to see more levels in this sort of style. supermariomake... Watch live: twitch.tv/carlsagan42 Twitter: / carl_sagan42
Hey Carl, you know, you look really similar to another youtuber I watch that goes by Stevie T or SteveTerreberry on youtube. You should check him out he does some funny videos on guitar playing and you guys kind of act alike sometimes too. You probably won't see it the way I do, but that's just cause you know yourself better. You know what I'm saying, it's a brain thing, happens with me, too, cause my brother keeps telling me I look like the actor from The Maze Runner but I don't think I look anything like him. Anyway that got side tracked, but just another brain thing, ADD is a bitch amirite.
I was looking for this in the comments! Thanks for saying it first! :D With the adequate mindset, that room must be really creepy. Imagine Mario entering the room and watching that mechanism moving the plants as a piano plays lone notes from some place he can't see. :| #2spooky4me
29 Stars?!? I just don't think its fair how lots of smm creators (not just the creator on this level) are not known and are better than other famous creators.
That's just the way it is if you're not a popular streamer. Fortunately there are people like Carl who play these levels and help them get more exposure at least.
+Mustracheman 28105 Yeah, I've got maybe one or two levels with double digit stars and none anywhere near 29, it's funny how what seems like a high number to us is an example of a level getting a crazy low number of stars in the big picture.
I take it this is your level? This was the first puzzle level I sat there watching it played (sadly I don't have the Wii to enjoy this) and was just in awe watching. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO :D
Sorry to bteak it to you, he is the literal imbodyment of "Practise Makes Perfect" Some of the viewers solved the puzzles 5 times faster than him. But I agree with some of his Kaizo skills and how hilarious he is.
Virtually everyone starts out bad at virtually everything. It is only when people tell themselves that they cannot do something and never try that makes the difference between "mad skillz" and being "bad." This goes for nearly everything in life. I have more practice with execution-based tricks than puzzle solving, but I'm getting better at puzzles, slowly :P
Holy crap that level was amazing... I wonder how much work went into lining everything up. Can't be easy to make the fire bars intersect for both the vines?
It was easier than it looked. For most of the clues I made the mechanism first and built the level around where things landed. I'm really glad you liked it!
This is the best puzzle level I've ever seen, and by quite a good margin. The mechanics were all unique (as far as I'e seen) and interesting, the puzzles were intuitive, and had an effective checkpoint system in an exploration-based level by having certain puzzle solutions allow you to bypass previous ones. All that combined with the cohesive visuals (something often lacking in puzzle levels) makes it a must-play in my opinion.
That was one of the most brilliant and exciting things that I've ever seen. When I realized that the cannonballs formed a _picture of the area_ that it was a hint for? I completely lost it!
As a game designer, that brought a joyful tear to my face. That alone was worth every hour that I've spent watching your vids, never mind all the other awesomeness. Just . . . Thank you.
CarlSagan42 By the by, I don't know whether it was intentional or not, but did you notice the shape? You know, the one shape. The shape that the cannonballs made to resemble the ice blocks. Did you notice what it resembled with the center point? Maybe it's just me for having adventure games on the mind when experiencing this level vicariously, but, well . . . What I'm thinking of has a phrase of magic words (Don't steal them!) that begins with a "T" and ends with an "ingle, Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah!"
That face when it now has 2100+ stars 👀 Carl, you had quite an impact on this guy's star count lol I knew his first one but didn't remember the creator's Mii or name. His way of giving hints is SO original!
I don't know why people get frustrated watching others play puzzle levels. Different minds work differently, if you can't accept that then maybe watch something else. You're going to see a lot of things Carl misses and he is going to see a lot of things you miss and that's all fine and normal.
This level was so cool and I love the atmosphere and design with the faces and everything, they kinda reminded me of like Mayan ruins or something, my favorite part was the one door where it was already paused for you and how it was completely silent, it was actually creepy and such a new unique way to approach smm puzzles 10/10 lol
"what are we gonna do next?" go in the door ""what are we gonna do next" *jumps around aimlessly* Go In The Door "What are we gonna do next?" OMG YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO GO IN THE DOOR JUST GO IN THE DOOR
Carl is definitely NOT a lateral thinker. He can figure out mechanics puzzles and beat kaizo levels without thinking, but these more cerebral levels he doesnt seem to get.
haha I think it's training to some extent. I'm just not practiced at this sort of thing and I got used to a certain type of puzzle. I used to be bad at all mario maker puzzles when I started, and now I'm at least pretty decent at the type that I've gotten used to. I tend to be reasonably creative at coming up with science experiments. I love putting together ideas to come up with new experiments. But maybe that is more like a mechanics puzzle...
CarlSagan42 Its not really about being creative... Im not sure if im using "lateral thinking" correctly here, but an example is the first time you paused with all of the canonballs with one red, i instantly thought of the ice blocks in the same formation. Its a matter of basically keeping the whole thing in mind at the same time while not needing to think about it too in depth. Meanwhile, when you do the stuff in the one room puzzles i just figured out what you did 10 minutes ago. It seems like science would kinda be the same way, taking specific things down as deep as they can go without making it very broad.
when you entered the second room with the frozen munchers i think you needed to go back to the moving munchers room and pause when the munchers were in the same position as in the frozen munchers room
Carlsagan42, The strangest thing happened! I started watching this video earlier today which inspired me to play some Mario Maker with my girlfriend, so we did a 100 Mario challenge, and guess what level was number 4... This very level! I didn't watch very far so we had to figure it out, and now watching the rest our process was almost identical. This donut block jump into the ice block ring is killing me!
haha woah that's amazing! yeah I noticed that that jump would probably be very hard for people who are only used to playing puzzles -- hope you got it! Have fun you two :)
I played this guy's "Why are you stealing from ruins?" level way back, and it was amazing too, using similar puzzle-solving hints. This was on another level though. Glad to see he finally got the attention his levels deserve! Great video Carl, loved the reactions again!
Just when I thought I had seen the extent of the creativity in Mario Maker, you upload this video. Holy balls, this level is phenomonal... I'll give it a star for sure :) Oh and happy (late) birthday, Mario Maker! I'm sorry that I forgot the actual date ._.
the thing that makes this level so fucking smart is the way it integrates sound in the puzzle solving, it gives the level that extra layer over just plain visuals in other puzzles.
Love the creepy aesthetic. Like everything from the faces to the silence in the solution rooms just adds up to make it almost scary in a way that kinda reminds me of the original Resident Evil games.
This Mario Maker puzzle reminds me forcibly of some of the elements from the Myst series of games. I have the entire series and I'm wondering if the maker of this has ever played them- the clues used here seem to pay homage to how clues were often delivered by those games. Carl, if you love puzzles, the Myst games are right up your alley!
I played the Myst when I was a kid. My brother and I would take turns and we literally wandered around inside the game for many months before we finally beat it. I hated the assholes in the book Q_(-.-Q) (because I fell right for their trap). I remember the organ/rocket being really hard for me to solve.
Oh, it got even harder in Riven. There was this one puzzle (the Map Room puzzle, IIRC) where you (SPOILER ALERT) had to visit each island on the map, find a golden dome, and associate its symbol and its location on the overall map with a colored marble for each of the domes and then arrange the marbles to those corresponding positions on a 25x25 grid to proceed. Just figuring out that you had to do that was *itself* a puzzle. Good times.... good times. Riven is on Steam, too. It's still, soup to nuts, the most difficult game of its kind I've ever played... (Followed in the series by Exile, Uru, Revelation, and End of Ages...)
aw man i kind of hoped chat would appear near the end everyone yelling ITS THERE! when he passed trough the ice formation at the end of the video after he died,it was awesome catching it live, awesome video and level as well
I love the fact that there is visual clues so deaf people can still play this level (even if the sound clues help a lot, especially in the red fireball one).
I wish there was some way to indicate that you needed to turn your volume up. A few days ago I played the first area for about 10 minutes and the only reason that I even got anywhere was because of the helpful comments telling me where to jump. I eventually gave up and went to the editor which revealed the key,so I went back to it and beat it in 15 seconds. So,I never got to understand what the level was doing or play the whole second half.
I think it's a pretty reasonable assumption that the player can hear things, if you want to handicap yourself by turning the sound down that isn't a design issue.
This is the best level I've ever seen. Kind of unfortunate the key is right at the beginning, because then someone could see the world record then just try to find the hidden key block instead & miss the rest of the experience. That's okay though I suppose, it would be their loss. Either way, absolutely wonderful. I was intrigued the whole way through.
This is by far one of the most thought out, artistic and creatively puzzling levels i've ever seen. Kudos to the maker! I thought I was pretty good recreating retro game level but this takes the cake for sure. My most creative level is a recreation of Ocarina of Time gameplay from the beginning up through the lost woods getting your sword. If anyone is interested, the code is below, enjoy! LoZ Ocarina of Time: Lost Woods [7D0D-0000-0265-D209] PS - I'll make more retro game levels if I can get enough stars so hook a brotha up! I'll even take requests for what levels to make! Aren't I a swell guy?! ?:D
@@SkylarGlider Well this is over 4 years old, so I don't remember, but I think I just commented this because I was joking about the fact he incorrectly used 'an' while calling himself an idiot.
Now that SMM1 is at an end i went back here to reminisce. I remember following you all this time ago and this was one of the most mind-blowing levels of SMM1. It's still crazy to me how much was done with the relatively tight restrictions of the SMM1 engine. This level didn't feel like a puzzle level inside a mario game. It felt like a puzzle game inside of a mario level. 7 years ago too. I'm almost done with college now. Genuinely hope some of these level-makers went on to do something with their talent. Here's to the future! I'll stick around for another 7 years at least :^)
Carl- Thanks so much for making so many awesome videos and for your charming commentary. This level has got to be my favorite one that you've shown us. The aesthetics, the music, the design, the concept, the puzzles, the tube clues- this level is a masterpiece and experiencing it with you was fan-frickin-tastic. Keep up the great work!
Puzzles are amazing but the atmosphere is as freaky as shit. It gives me the vibe that Mario is stuck in a trap laid out by some mad riddler/architect/Jigsaw who slips little hints to escape, that are yet unsettling enough as if to screw with his emotions.
That was fucking amazing. By far the most creative level I've ever seen in this game. That guy man. Now everyone is going to start making them. there is about to be some really interesting levels coming your way. I'll definitely be checking those out to.
I played this level yesterday cause I saw that you liked this on SMM. I didn't understand the puzzle part with the munchers that didn't move, but I jumped around and found out where to go next like you did. But then I was completely stumped with all the cannons and one being red.
The majority of people with lots of stars. Not that they're bad, they're mostly automatic/music levels. It's just that there are so many people who make much more creative/unique/interesting/epic/authentic levels that simply do not have the recognition and go unnoticed. I think this puzzle deserves far more stars than most of the top weekly starred levels.
I kinda agree with you. Most creators make terrible automatic or troll levels, and the highlighted section in Mario Maker is just crappy auto levels with clickbait thumbnales. People dont put time and hard work into their levels so they resort to Troll Blocks and Enemy Spam... For me: Most Overrated: RubberRoss Most Underrated: Sirius
Yeah, RubberRoss is by far the most overrated. It's just really mediocre, spam troll levels that only became popular because of him coasting on his GameGrumps fame.
+WFDolphinPilot To be honest, I think Andre from Gamexplain falls into the category of "coasting on the fandom" too. He has some good levels, but for the most part I just find them all really gimmicky. The poor guy really does try though. He's not being lazy. But like, trying to make a level in Mario Maker that resembles Bob-Omb Battlefield from SM64 is an objectively bad idea.
When you went into that pipe you thought was broken, it was actually telling you to pause in the muncher room when the munchers in both rooms are in the same position.
The creators of MM needs to give gold star of merit to really great levels like this and thumbs down icon to troll levels with lots of death traps (hidden blocks sealed player in a dead end).
I think this was by far the best level u ever played!! I wish it went on longer! I was very interested in this particular level very much. Good job mate!
