They didn't have to put this much effort into something that a child would very likely skip, but they did. Nintendo really did peak around the GameCube and Wii when it came to being experimental and making the Official Nintendo Seal mean something special.

The 2000s was easily the peak of Mario The modern Mario design we all know and love Great games like galaxy, strikers and strikers charged, superstar baseball and sluggers, and more like sunshine, mkdd, and others Basically the show of “Wario and waluigi” with this, toadstool tour when they get chased by bowser, and sluggers ending when they run from a bullet bill that sends them all the way up in the sky
The only reason I mildly disagree was that the 2000s also was the start of when New grounds edgy humor defined most views of Mario content and I'm glad thwt phase is ending
It's so funny, they had a good chance of winning if they played normally. Of course they already got eliminated so no chance at the trophy anyway even if they won

I still think it is and Nintendo should do more like it! It's not just an opening, it's basically a mini cartoon within the game! Makes me want a whole series of shorts like this on a streaming service

This and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour’s introductory cutscene are some of the greatest opening cutscenes in all of gaming. Also love how Wario and Waluigi are allowed to shine more in these intros and have a lot of fun moments as well as their rivalry against Mario and Luigi. I watched this on RU-vid when I was way younger and then had this game for the Wii shortly after. I’m touched by the memories from rewatching this just now. Even though I’ve seen pieces of the intro cutscene after I had to sell my Wii for a Wii U, I don’t know when’s the last time I seen the full intro all the way through. Also, this game is the best Mario Tennis game in my opinion due to the various courses, modes, and Amazing character roster. The outtakes where the characters are just acting and filming the intro cutscene are also gold, and I wish we’d get them nowadays. Also love the voice acting, especially Charles Martinet as Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. (Enjoy your retirement, Charles). Sorry for the long comment lol Just wanted to share my thoughts and nostalgia and say my piece. Thank you, Nintendo, for the memories and making my childhood.

Looking at this after the reveal of the scrapped Wapeach, I feel Bowser's role in this intro was intended for her. He does exactly what Wapeach would do according to her creator's facts about her, and this would've been the perfect introduction to her character.
In an alternate reality, this game was Wapeach's grand introduction, plotting and scheming in her lab chair to sabotage Peach's tournament. Watching and enlisting Wario and Waluigi to help her out. Making faces and taunting the Princess on the jumbotron. Standing up there in her little airship while her cronies shoot the Bob-ombs. Then it all blows up and they all collapse at the end in Trio fashion. Alas, what could've been. I think we were robbed of a fun character.

It's a new era for the series as the last prominent member of the primary N64 Japanese and American voice cast retires and as the new Mario actor continues to carry the torch forward. Still, this opening is one of the many thing that will help me continue to remember you, Charles.

You know watching everyone complain about how Waluigi wasn’t in smash kinda made me start hating the character but after watching this again after a while I’m glad to say my faith is restored in him

Why would Bowser sabotage a tournament he was already participating in? He's evil, but he's not petty enough to sabotage a tennis tournament. Why would he even bother allying himself with Wario and Waluigi at all? Doesn't he have his son and Koopa Troopa and Paratroopa to help him? What kind of person would willingly go out of their way to show up and upstage Princess Peach and sabotage her tournament? Would willingly join up with two other resentful and jealous jerks to do it? Someone who doesn't like Peach. Someone who is jealous of Peach. Someone like... Wapeach.
First Scene: Wapeach, obscured in the shadows by her large comfy chair, watches Wario and Waluigi's match against the Mario Bros. and takes an interest in them and smirks. Second Scene: Wario and Waluigi flee from the cops and stumble into her secret lab, where Wapeach awaits. Wapeach spins her comfy chair around, still hidden in shadow, walks toward them in the the light. The light reveals Wapeach to the pair. Wario and Waluigi laugh at her but she brings them in line with her frightening temper (and her axe). Wapeach reveals her secret lab to them and asks them to help her sabotage the Peach Dome tournament. "She walks funny." "Oh, shut up." Impressed by the set up, Wario and Waluigi agree to help her and start training. Wapeach evilly grins as she straps them into the training machines. "Put some hustle in it, boys!" As she turns back in her comfy chair towards the video monitor. Wario and Waluigi training montage commences. Tournament Scene: The Peach Dome final is underway. Mario and Luigi vs Yoshi and Donkey Kong. Princess Peach stands in excited anticipation for a great match, but what's this? Someone is interrupting the tournament! Wario and Waluigi appear where Yoshi and DK are supposed to be! A static image of Wapeach appears on the Jumbotron blowing a raspberry and laughing. The camera moves up to Wapeach in her mini-airship, taunting the Princess and telling her to look at the jumbotron, which shows it changing images. It's her boys versus those goody-goody Mario Bros. Battle Scene: Wario and Waluigi pull out the machine and start firing Bob-ombs at the Marios as Wapeach gleefully looks on. Mario, Luigi, and the others return fire. Bowser (in the crowd this time), not impressed by this lame little "Wapeach" upstart messing up the tournament of his beloved Peach (on top of trying to destroy Mario, which is his job), joins the action. Wapeach, seeing her boys may need some help, starts hastily tossing bob-ombs from her airship and fires a Bullet bill from her cannon at Mario, who sends to it back to the Warios, blowing their machine away and causing a bob-omb to blow up her airship. Wapeach panicks as her damaged airship starts to crash. "This looks bad". Peach looks on in horror as Wapeach desperately tries to steer the airship away. The airship crashes into Wario and Waluigi. BOOM. Final Scene: Defeated, Wario, Waluigi, and Wapeach stand dumbfounded, damaged and covered in ashes and soot, faint in unison. "Mamma Mia."
Literally the director's cut of the game's opening sequence. I imagine the original script and test screening of the intro is completely lost media but good to know what could've been if they went forward with the concept of a "Wapeach" character. Sadly, we probably won't see her in both cinematic rendering and in-game animation, especially her power shot/save where she holds a giant axe or something (most likely used for chopping down trees and not anything serial killer related unless you count the woodfolk in Super Mario Galaxy 2.) Also, her design alone according to Miyamoto looks similar to that of Yatterman's Donjoro and Nintendo didn't want to cause confusion even though they were on board with the character being the opposite of peach like how Wario and Waluigi being the opposite of the Mario and Luigi. Another reason from Miyamoto is that her treatment to Wario and Waluigi as her lackeys seemed concerning since Wario himself plays a huge role in both Warioland and WarioWare so they didn't want him alongside Waluigi reduced to being servants to her will. But yeah, having Bowser fight alongside the heroes seemed interesting cause only he gets to be the bad guy and not her stealing his spotlight. Really gives so much character and thought to him for once.

3:16 I love the casual implication that Wario and Waluigi were able to incapacitate DK and Yoshi. Wario and Waluigi were able to physically overpower a gorilla and a dinosaur.
@@RisingBeast00 DK punched the moon out of orbit and Yoshi defeated Bowser on several occasions using nothing but eggs. Meanwhile, Wario's partner for this fight has met the incredible goal of... picking up sports equipment. I think Wario is a little bit outmatched,

@@Mac14329 Lol I was mistaken, EPD has made a few spinoffs with those two. However I was not completely incorrect. Had forgotten EPD included Nintendo SPD who created spin-offs, EAD was the other part of the merger and they were in charge of mainline Mario and Zelda. EAD housed the big N’s high ranking veterans (including series creator Miyamoto) who didn’t utilize Wario, Waluigi, Daisy and other characters made outside its walls. Do you think it’s a coincidence EAD consistently omitted them? Wario is the lone non EAD character they considered including and it was like once in SM64DS. Outside of that game Wario, Waluigi and Daisy might’ve made a minor appearance in a core Mario, wouldn’t expect anything bigger than a cameo. I’ve seen rumors one or more employees who were part of EAD don’t like them. Couldn’t verify these claims, but I’d be willing to bet they are correct. Ex EAD figures are likely still in charge of mainline Mario under the new EPD banner. EAD games always had an aversion to the extended Mario universe (the RPGs, Mario Parties etc). Lastly Miyamoto is guilty of the really stupid mandate that restricts the modification of Mario characters, only EPD has full freedom to use the franchise as they please. The mandate and their aversion to non EAD material disgust me, god why do they have to be so fussy?
