Once toads realised Bowser was nothing more than a fake enemy and Mario was the fabricated saviour, they stopped believing Mario's lies. Many died of overwork for Peach's frivolous orders. They were forced to work all day farming mushrooms and fireflowers for Mario, construct race tracks so that Princess and Mario could have fun, hunt so that Princess Peach could eat fish and some meat, while starving toads watch her. It was enough for toads, and monarch had to go. You really nailed the PS1 scene transitions by the way. Great stuff.

It was early morning, one week and three days after the death of Peach when the first bomb dropped. So much blood had already been shed in the stalemate that had formed. Realizing their situation, word was sent to release Mario on the grounds that he would stop Bowser one last time, but they did not find the hero they once praised. A starved, hanging corpse spelled the end of their republic. As many heard the singing of one final, and much larger bomb overhead, some couldn’t help but wonder, “What did we do wrong?” while others closed their eyes with a grin, “Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The events of the mushroom kingdom make neighbor nations on edge. Hyrule ,for many years has been teetering toward decent. The new incarnation of Gannon has taken advantage of Hyrules political crisis as the nations working class and the elites class. It’s been many years since there a legendary hero to save the nation, but by the time Hyrule modernized., it previewed a lot of its history as myth and folklore. New technology such as bolt action rifles, tanks, machine guns, biplanes, brought by the miracles of industrialization now fuel a crisis of a nation seeking a new identity, a paradise for the common man. Hyrule has had many civil wars of its past, but none like this Can’t wait for game theory or some other theory channel to rip off the eventual outcome of a modern Hyrule.

Eventually the cycle of terror and saving broke the people of the Mushroom Kingdom. Each time Bowser came and was defeated by Mario, saving the Princess, their leader, but not their homes, not their children who laid slain. Where was an Army to stand against the Bowser nation? Where was the Navy? Where was their hard earned taxes to pay for this? The answer was of course in the Ballrooms held and luxury the Princess wore. Tired and with little options, the Toad people gathered and with little guards or Army stormed the Castle. They took Peach, imprisoned her Champion. Some will say the trail was farce, evidence lacking. In truth however, it was the opposite as she and Mario were given trial by Judge and Jury. All the wealth for security and infrastructure was proven wasted. The Castles meant to protect were shown to have secret entrances that only the champion Mario would know of. When a Bowser would take one, the Princess would take a secret passage to the next, as Mario fought the Bowser and set an explosive off. Princess Peach wanted it this way as it was a fetish of hers. She purposely set up plans for the Bowsers to invade. She planted spies and lures for them to invade. As more information was freed, the Toads found evidence that the Bowsers weren't an 'invading army' but 'defending Army'. Peach sent spies to the Bowser Kingdom to destroy important structures and assassinate political targets, then told the Toads the opposite. With this knowledge, it eventually came to the attention of the Bowser Kingdom and they wanted blood for being pawns themselves in a morbid game. The Judges and Jury, seeing the international tension raising, could only see one way to ease the pressure. Princess Peach was sentenced to die, under moonlight as it would be symbolic for the darkness she had brought and the next day would symbolize a new beginning. As for Mario, as he 'directly' killed the Goomba's, the court of Bowser wanted him to stand trial within their lands. The Toad's would only agree to this, provided, they gave Mario a trial within the Mushroom Kingdom first, so any evidence against him wouldn't be skewed by Bowser laws and acts of revenge. The Bowsers agreed, but only if a group of their Royal family was there to witness the trails to make sure no evidence would be tampered with. Mario was found guilty of manslaughter, reckless endangerment of others, money laundering as the Kingdom's wealth was found on him and desecration of historic artifact such as 'magical flutes.' Further investigation turned up evidence of animal abuse, like the endangered Yoshi, but more particular, the abuse of a large ape beast known as a 'Donky Kong'. For this his former interest Paule was brought to trial. Paule submitted evidence that Mario abused him, set him free, and kidnapped her for recuse as it caused him to be aroused. Later, as she uncovered Mario's operation, freed Kong and they escaped together, Kong back to his family and Paule a new life that would see her elected Mayor of the town she chose to live in. With evidence damming, Mario was found guilty on all accounts and sentenced to the tower until he could be taken back to the Bowser Kingdom. To ensure he wouldn't have a home if he escaped, he was also given the death sentence if found outside the tower or in Bowser custody within the Mushroom Kingdom. As a show of 'good faith' the Bowser Kingdom would allow a group of Toads to be present during Mario's trail within their Kingdom to make sure that trial was also fair. It was obvious he would face the death sentience in that Kingdom as well by way of slow bullet. As for his brother Luigi, both the Toad's and Bowsers found him innocent of all charges. His homeland was under invasion was all he knew, and influenced by his brother Mario and later Princess Peach to take action. However he did still destroy infrastructures and murder Goomba's, which caused political and international pressure, and it was likely he would face prison. To his aid, his Courtly Love, Princess Daisy, offered to take him to her Kingdom as a type of 'banishment' but the courts wouldn't relent on a decision until all evidence was reviled. To make a mid-way, Paule came to Luigi's aid. She knew little of Mario's brother as, he seems to keep things separate when she was with him. Her town was far from Princess's Daisy's Kingdom but near the boarders of both the Mushroom and Bowser Kingdoms. She offered to take Luigi under her watch. Both the Toad's and Bowseres agreed as he had committed to 'well being' within the Kingdom and 'religious duties' of removing ghost within mansions, but he was not to leave Paule's town until called. Two years passed before all evidence shifted through and judged. Luigi was cleared of all wrong doing, to ease international tensions however, banished from his home but to that of Daisy's to live the rest of his days in peace. Mario was to be sent by Bowser airship to await trail within their Kingdom. Princess Peach was to be executed. And all would happen on the same night so to symbolize the next day as a new beginning for the Mushroom Kingdom. Leaving the courthouse Mario called out to his brother, but Luigi wouldn't even look him in the eyes. Years of lying, possessive nature over people, destruction and death, those ghost had a reason to haunt him. Mario then called to Paule, she as well wouldn't look him in his eyes. She wasn't 'rewarding' a hero all those years ago. She was being used for a sick man's game. Princess Daisy would slap Mario for his misdeeds to her Love and his brother. Princess Peach then called out Luigi and called him a coward for not answering her, he ignored her. Princess Peach then called out out Paule as a 'subject'. This was actually responded to. Mayor Paule walked to Princess Peach, "Subject? I was never a 'subject' to the Mushroom Kingdom as my town is far out of your 'lands' your Majesty, so I never even had loyalties, even if not so, I still would have none to 'you'." Princess Peach then called out to Princess Daisy as 'fellow Royalty'. This as well was responded too. Princess Daisy walked to Princess Peach, "Fellow Royalty? How many of 'my' subjects died in 'your' wars? I, who once called you a 'sister' and you used me and my people as pieces in a game?" Princess Peach was left standing and then fell to the ground and cried as she was carried to the tower to await execution. As night fell, Toad's gathered. Princess Peach lead to the guillotine. Her thoughts raced and knew her game of 'false' rescue and 'real' lust were now over, for the first time she knew fear and was wishing for a legitimate rescue. In the tower, Mario was denied one last moment of passion with Princess Peach and sat in the tower cell not able to bring himself to witness her fate. He heard the blade fall and held his head and cried as he then heard the airship and congregation gather for him. His brother never saw him before his departure but Mario did see the airship with the symbol of Princess Daisy's people on the sides, either Luigi was on it or about to be. Mario looked around and knew he had no one left. His long game of rescuing and being 'rewarded' were finally over with. The people who's lives he enjoyed taking about to be avenged. Luigi was having tea with Paule, both realizing they would have been good friends if not for the greed and lust of Luigi's brother, who's name they would not mention on that night. The airship landed and under darkness Princess Daisy was at the upper end of the gangplank as the two walked across it. Paule stopped without entering it, hugged Luigi then Princess Daisy, "I have work here that must be done, we will see each other again my friends." In the air Princess Daisy and Luigi held each other as they saw an airship with the Bowser symbol on it. Both knew that either Mario was on it or about to be. Princess Daisy looked out at the darken horizon, with a sense of hope. Luigi looked out at the horizon with a sense of hope. Princes Daisy, "It's almost sunrise, a new day." Luigi, "No.....it's almost a new era, a new world, a new life." Mario was found guilty and executed by way of Bowser law. The Bowser Kingdom eventually fell into civil strife and now is the 'People's Republic of Bowser'. A totalitarian regime. The Mushroom Kingdom retrieved their lost wealth, unfortunate there was so much of it and little infrastructure Mario didn't built, as he was charged to do so, thus all the accumulated gold now freed to the public, quickly devalued and befell the Kingdom. Currently the once Mushroom Kingdom is now a hostel place of rival tribes who's encampments will, from time to time, settle outside the ruins of their once great civilization. Mayor Paule would later find Donky Kong and sound the alarm of the terrorist organization he fought. The Yoshi's would come to their aid and form a lasting alliance. Mayor Paule would also join her region into the Flower Kingdom becuase of the deteriorating nature of the Bower and Mushroom Kingdoms but also visit her friends without restraint. Luigi lived until sixty-three years of age, married by allowance of Royal Creed to Princess Daisy who lived to fifty-three. They had three children together. Their rule was of constitution and free expression, lessons learned by his brother and Princess Peach. Though the Royalty of the Flower Kingdom is waning and becoming more of a constituted Republic, their nation is strong and has grown since in it's prosperity.
In the turmoil of the waning monarchy and the rise of the growing terror, one man stood without equal, a towering monument to the meaning of courage and patriotism. Though born far from the kingdom borders to a family of squalor and little fortune, he rose through the army regardless, captivating the garrisons with his words and actions. In the hours left to her, she composed a letter to her brother-in-law, Luigi, affirming her clear conscience, her Catholic faith, and her love and concern for her children. The letter did not reach Luigi.

When the last defense collapsed and the toads assault the castle, screaming for justice and equality, peach realized the end of the princess era. Her kingdom and the whole concept of monarchy fall down with her head that day.

"Let them eat cake." - Princess Peach The Toads of the lower class felt betrayed to find Peach's invitation letter to Mario promising him cake while population was starving after the last war with the Koopas. This is what broke the camel's back in the end. Even Toadsworth would turn a deaf ear to the plight of his own people while going on expensive vacations to tropical islands funded by the taxpayers' coins. Done were the days of Toads picking vegetables for the monarch and only getting a tithe of the produce while the fat man would grow even fatter on mushrooms while resting on his laurels and playing golf and tennis like the rich pig that he is. What has he done for the little people as of late? Enough was enough? The time for change had come.
The meaning of cake at the time was different. Cake was the burnt bits of dough that got stuck to the sides of the oven. It did not mean a sugary flour based desert. It's a common misconception that even many historians make to this day.
After the Toad Revolt had ended and Toadspierre had been the last guillotined, the Toads wanted to get back at the Koopas for defeating them in the last war. A rising artillery commander, Napoluigi, had been successful during the Revolt, and had great skill at war. After a quick campaign in Goombaland, he vowed to end the Koopas and Bowsers, which won him popularity in the Mushroom Republic. He would soon return to Toad City, and would become First Counsel. After a campaign in Bone Koopa Colony, he had shown that he was capable of hurting the Koopas. He would return to the Mushroom Republic, establish himself as emperor, and form the Mushroom Empire. And thus the many bloody years of the Napoluigic Wars would begin.

There was a slang term similar to cake regarding the burnt scraps left on the sides of ovens. This was frequently sold to the poor in Paris during the flour shortage.

All those years of royal executioner made him sensible about the fate of the condemned. He was at the order of Mario, but he became his killer. Mario then, muffled his prayed one last time, and took the door with the three toad and then exited the castle... Mario didn't had the same luck as the Princess Peach or his brother who got to travel during night time and were geniually appreciated from the people... He was forced to walk during the middle of a hot day in the middle of a crowd in anger "TRANCHEZ LUI LA TÊTE!" "À MORT LE PLOMBIER : VIVE LA RÉPUBLIQUE" said the crowd of angry toad while spitting over him and insulting him. Mario went up the stair and looked behind him one last time... He didn't said any word during month, but he finally opened his mouth and shouted for the last time : "I die innocent of all the crimes laid to my charge. I forgive the authors of my death, and I pray God that the blood which you are about to shed may never fall on the Mushroom Republic…" the crowd didn't listened, the guard didn't let him finish his sentence. A toad: “Kill him!” Another toad: “Cut his head off!” All toads: “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” Toad: “Justice will finally be done! Today we are all gathered here to celebrate together both the end and the beginning of a new era, the era of Toad! Mario, plumber dressed in red, tell us your last-“ Mario: “LOOK AT ME TOAD! Look at me and tell me in the eye! How long will you continue? When will your selfish struggle end? You'll get Luigi and Daisy and Yoshi too, huh? Isn’t it so? Do you really think you can win this way? Your war will only take away countless other innocent victims, and you know that well. But you don't care about numbers at all, you only care about becoming the new king of this wretched land, don't you? Here's why all this! You don't really care about all these Toads, and thousands more will die. You killed Princess Peach and now you're going to kill me, you convinced the toads that we were the bad guys, but soon they will notice, Toad, soon they will realize that you are the tyrant and they will take you out. Don't forget these words of mine Toad! If there is still good in you, stop now! Your revolution will only lead to the extinction of your species! Hear me toads! You have been blinded by a hatred that does not belong to you, you are participating in a war that is not yours! True to his proletarian roots Mario was loyal to revolution until his last breath. The oppressive rule of the mushroom kingdom led the toads to rebellion. Even though his love for princess peach ran deep he still saluted the revolutionary vanguard as the blade of the guillotine ended the monarchy. And yet, even as the dedicated revolutionary he was, he couldnt help but feel torn. Torn between his personal feelings for princess peach and his own revolutionary ideals. As he made his choice for the revolution the feelings of guilt and betrayal towards princess peach for his own role in the rebellion created a wrethched man. And so the two former lovers exchanged one last gaze at each other before the blade fell down. He wondered, had this all gone too far? Would he be next once the fanatical toads found out their former relationship? Fear, guilt and shame consumed the once proud Mario. Life would never be the same

3 days later in bowsers castle kamik arived with the news about about peachs execution and the toad revolution. bowser broke down on tears after heard that peach was decapiteded and her head was in exibition along with the corpses of other members of the royal family. horrified by the news bowser asked what happend to the mario brothers. kamik said mario is in prison awaiting execution in Peachs old castle now called "Le palais champignon du peuple" and luigi fleed to the sarasaland kingdom. with the sadness transformed in anger bowser orded to bombard the mushroom kingdom and take down the revolution. kamik leaved the room to make the preparations for the next day. - The Day before The Great Mushroom Genocide
Bowser understood too late what he had done, he not only destroyed the revolution whit such brutality that the seeds of mercy found theit way in the hearts of his soldier, he had ended the war, the only thing keeping the industries of the kingdom running, whitout it, unemployment skyrocketed, hunger claimed lifes everywhere and the people of his kingdom saw only one responsible for all of this, him. Soon enough there was the first mutiny, an airship put down the bowser flag and rised a bloody red one, soon enough other airships did It and the army sensed to capture the captains and the sailors of said airships, joined the mutiny, and now this mutiny was soon to be a revolt, he had to act quick, to end this revolt before it spreaded to his whole kingdom, but it was already too late, in 3 days all the cities where burning in the fire of the revolution, and his castle was under siege. At the end of the week the Castel garrison revolted, and bowser now knew, there was no saving him, he and his family, would die.

The country is called "Mushroom Kingdom" rather than "Toad Kingdom" and its ruler is human, so I guess it had a rather sick early history. Seems like repeated failures of the monarchy to repel or prevent Koopa invasions opened some old wounds and led many to believe that Captain Toad should be promoted to First Consul.
Peach looked back at her life as she was lead to the square,a memory passed her mind,a time when she was still the queen,when she had an audience with the man that would soon lead the toad rebellion,his name was Luigi,she remembered the conversation going something like this "You have turned your ire onto your subjects peach,treated them with a distain they do not deserve,at what point do you think they'll snap?" "Never,they want to be ruled,they are weak,they have no purpose without a ruler to guide them" "Peach,there will come a time where you will be the one in chains" Peach remembered how wicked her laugh sounded,like the kackle of a hag who's taking pleasure in her victims suffering "You think my family line will just disappear,no,one will rise to take my place" "That maybe true,but by that point,you will be dust..." "I WILL NEVER BE DUST!!!" But here she was,being lead to her death,she wanted to rule for a thousand life times,for centuries uncounted by man,but life everlasting is a concept lost on the rest of the world it seems,she shouted at the crowd as her head was lowered into the range of the guillotines cold blade "YOU CANT DO THIS TO ME,I AM YOUR QUEEN,YOUR RULER!!!" Luigi stepped out infront her,she looked up at him in fear as he spoke "Look around you,you're people hate you,your castle is in ruins,you are queen...of nothing" Those were the last words peach heard before her death...

I get the "Marie Antoanette's execution" vibe from the short film, and also "The Stranger" vibe from Albert Camus' novel. "For it all to end, for me to feel less alone, all I want in the day of my execution is a large crowd, and to be welcomed by them in shouts of anger." Pretty much the alienation of Peach, the fact that she feels so distant from her peers and the people she's supposed to rule (the fact that there are only mushroom guys and she's the only human there), and Mario rotting in jail, and the guilt for letting her down is a nice touch, along with the music. Just my 2 cents.
The war had grown very unpopular. Toad casualties were at their peak, and protests sprang up on all sides of the Kingdom. Luigi supported all of these anti-war movements, saying "why the hell are we even there anyways?". Fearing that such a known person could spark flames across the kingdom, Luigi was ordered to be silenced by the government. Luckily the cover-up was discovered a week before it happened sparing Luigi. Just at that time deaths peaked at 56,742 in one day, including Toadette and Yoshi as a result of friendly fire. Alas, the Toads had enough and were ready for an uprising. On the night of June 4th, 1999, the Toads stormed the castle killing virtually everyone. Mario and Peach were later captured, with Peach being executed promptly after, with Mario joining her a week later.
Ah yes, I love waking up at 3:01 PM, hop on RU-vid, only to see PS2 graphic Toads overthrowing and executing their once benevolent ruler, with the jailed plumber having a sense of doom and despair, the desolation evident in his hollow eyes.

The fact that the executioner toad held up the princess' head to not show the crowd her head but to show her head the crowd is hauntingly accurate and I love that you added that detail in. It's true that when you are executed you're alive for a dreadful few seconds still, you can see everything. It's horrifying.
After many decades of constant violence from the evil tryrant Bowser and his militia to the Mushroom Kingdom along with the never ending cycle of their ruler being incarcerated by said tyrant, the toads have had enough of this torment and took action in what is known the Mushroom Kingdom revolution. Here forth was the execution of Princess Peach, for failing to address the everlasting conflict that plagued their kingdom for as long as they could comprehended and therefore would seen a Dawn of a new era, ruled by toads for the toads. As for Mario, Peach's close associate, he has been punished for the destruction of many bricks that inhabit the kingdom, which was the civilians themselves, trapped underneath Bowser's spell. He later lived the rest of his days spending in solitude while holding the weight of the dead toads and the death of the princess Luigi however was spared of any punishment, as he was found innocent for being misguided by being in Mario's shadow. He is now living among the toads as we speak, promising to better serve the Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario may have those 1-UPS but those ones don't last forever. Think about all of the sentences Mario has to serve. Living multiple live sentences in prison just to die and come back.
Mario knew that the crimes he committed were forced on him by peach in reality the goombas were good and he figured out peach brainwashed him into murder
