Hey Colin, this is a lovely tune I'd love to learn on my octave. I'm interested in getting the sheet music; I just wanted to confirm your tabs are for GDAe?
@colinbotts
@colinbotts Год назад
Thanks, I'm glad you like the tune. Yes, the sheet music is written out for mandolin/O.M. (GDAE). Since I recorded this video with my mandola it's in a different key, but it'll sound really great on octave mandolin.

That mandola just flat-out sounds great to my ears! I've been looking at demos of mandolins, ukeleles and mini six string classical and acoustic guitars to add to my personal lefthanded collection. But after listening to this lovely instrument, I think the big, F-shaped mandola is the sound I'm really looking for: especially when soloing. It has a lovely, haunting tone when perfectly in tune and picked or strummed deftly. Also, in the typical mix of acoustic-elecric fretted instruments used by professonal stage musicians throuyghout my lifetime, the higher notes of the mandolin - and mandola - seem to pierce really well through the mix.

Thanks so much! Based on my experience with this mandola over the past 11 or so months, I'd say go for it and get one. It's really enjoyable to play and extremely versatile.

I echo the comments of @stevelobley6710…. I’ve trawled through the selection of tunes you have played on this instrument and they are all very well played…the other constant is that the Mandola sounds beautiful in each of them. I’ve dipped into the luthier’s website, but there doesn’t seem to be any details provided about the instruments. What model is the one you are playing?

@@colinbotts Greetings from Juneau Alaska. Yes I Still play it but now have 3 other octaves.. I have two Pono octaves with guitar bodies. One has a 22inch scale and one with a 20 inch. I installed a pick up in them and bought a Tonewood Amp which attaches to the back of the body. The Tonewood produces 7 effects that exit out the sound hole-reverb, delay, etc. It sounds amazing, especially for Celtic. Quality sound-not cheesy at all. Check out their RU-vid videos, you will see. Guitarist Mike Dawes is Tonewood biggest advocate. Love your Pomeroy mandola, sounds fantastic.

@colinbotts
@colinbotts 6 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks, glad you enjoyed my composition. To answer your question, yes, you can play this on the mandolin. It will end up sounding a 5th higher, due to the tuning difference, so you'd be in the key of D instead of G. And by the way, it sounds great on mandolin :)

@@colinbotts thank you, will try this at some point. Btw what brand of instrument are you using? And strings? I like the earthy not too bright tone you have going on!
@colinbotts
@colinbotts 6 месяцев назад
@@sajidulhasan2027 The mandola is a Pomeroy, made by Don Paine, and the strings are D'Addario EJ76 (phosphor bronze mandola strings). I usually use the EJ74s on my mandolin, by the way. Obviously the instrument and the strings (to a lesser degree) will affect your tone, but you can also alter your tone a lot by just changing your right hand technique. Try experimenting with the angle of the pick as it contacts the strings as well as how firmly you grip it. I find I get a better tone with a more relaxed right hand and moderate angle of attack. Also try out different picks. The shape, material, thickness, bevel, etc. of the pick all play a role in the tone of your instrument. At the end of the day, I always sound like me, no matter what instrument I pick up. For better or worse, so much of our tone and sound comes from our hands. It seems like most musicians (and I include myself in this statement) are constantly searching for the next thing we can purchase that will make us sound better, ignoring the uncomfortable truth that WE are our sound, and the instruments are just an extension of us. Apologies for the long reply if you already knew all of this. You mentioned you were new to the mandolin so I thought I'd offer up some advice that might be helpful. Thanks for listening! All the best!

@@colinbotts this was a wonderful response, thanks for taking the time. Yeah my right hand playing improved once I started easing off, thinking you need to hold the pick hard to pluck fast. But my forearm kept cramping up. Then I noticed I played better once relaxed. My teacher also showed me to pick at an angle rather than parallel, and I find this works for me. I also found I played better and less tense when my unused fingers of the right hand are in an open position rather than looking like a closed fist. 6 weeks into the mandolin and it's wonderful to meet enthusiastic and great musicians like yourself

Wonderful composition - I purchased the transcription! I especially like the call/response you have going on over sustained notes! Is Mariposa named after the town in the Sierra foothills in California?

Hi Jack, thanks for the support! I shot the video with my mandola, so it's tuned CGDA. However, the composition will sound great on mandolin but will be a 5th higher (so you won't be able to play along with the video). Hope that helps!
