Marjorie is a longtime resident of Madisonville, a racially diverse neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. In recent years, the area has experienced increased investment, and with it, an influx of new neighbors. Marjorie shared how she is witnessing these changes.
Marjorie's story, and many others, inspired Design Impact to coordinate the Madisonville Community Studio, an ongoing project co-created by Madisonville residents and Design Impact with support from the Kresge Foundation. The Community Studio is a place for Madisonville residents, business owners, and community workers to explore key questions about the inclusiveness of neighborhood changes. Marjorie: There are people who want
0:07
folks gone.
0:07
I mean that's the bottom line
0:10
Because they don't see
0:12
that we bring something
0:16
to the table
0:17
and I think
0:19
everybody brings something to the table I don’t care
0:20
what their background is.
0:22
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
0:35
When I drove up today and I saw all of this was gone
0:39
I was emotional
0:42
sad.
0:43
We love to tear everything down and then build
0:47
something anew as if that's progress but you know does
0:53
new buildings make better lives?
0:56
We’ll see.
0:59
We’ll see.
1:02
[BURST OF UPLIFTING MUSIC]
1:04
I don't understand why progress has to mean displacing people.
1:09
That part I don't get.
1:11
I found out my neighbor had to move.
1:13
She loved her community and she loved her neighbors.
1:16
And you know she was displaced because of
1:21
I’m gonna say greed
1:24
that's what it feels like to me.We're not desired here.
1:27
[MUSIC CONTINUES]
1:29
If you move people out all you’re gonna have is people
1:32
moving in and there won't be anything to sustain the culture.
1:38
I am Madisonville I truly truly believe that
1:41
you know
1:44
and I love it here.
1:46
That's what happens when you're in a neighborhood
1:49
that is a community.
1:52
You know I understand private development but some of these
1:56
folks are getting TIF dollars.
1:58
That means we are taxpayers and we should be
2:04
included on all levels of this process
2:07
so that we form a stronger community for everybody.
2:13
[BIRDS CHIRPING AND CARS PASSING]
2:14
But we will see. We will see what happens
2:20
See if everything that's up here is true and has meaning
2:26
and is sincere or these are just words to make
2:31
people feel good so they don't have to be held accountable.
2:35
Our Madisonville.
2:37
We're being sold out.
2:39
As if we have no value or worth.
2:43
Those of us who stand strong we’ll be here.
2:47
We're not leaving.
2:49
But it hurts.
2:51
It hurts.
2:53
My hope is that those of us who stay and love
2:59
this community are looked upon as someone that is valued,
3:07
loved and cherished.
3:10
And I don't know that I'm hopeful.

Marjorie, I lived in Madisonville too, I feel exactly as you do! I remember Kunkle Pharmacy, Madison Bakery, Metmen's department store, French Bauer Dairy, Lions Jr High, Mininio's, the laundry mat with the multi color polkadot ball sign, going to Oakley Drive In, Cox Dry cleaning, old Madisonville park, the day old bread store, old Madisonville School, even in the 60s when the Watermelon man came around in an old pickup, collecting bottles to cash at the pony kegs, watching planes to & from Lunken, riding down the serpentine cut in the Kenwood hill, going to shop at grocery stores on Plainville, just so many precious memories. THANK YOU MARJORIE FOR SPEAKING MY MIND!

My name ia Gary Ingram and I grew up , until 1979, in Madisonville. I have recently been to Madisonville and Madison Place, to visit friends who currently reside there still. I grew up on the dead end Watterson St., off of Bramble.
