Republicans didn't become shit overnight. This has been what Republicans have been like for generations. They're just much more overt about it since Trump, and populists have come to the forefront of the party. Nobody who has been paying ANY ATTENTION to American politics since the mid 1900s has thought the Republicans were anything except an anti-democracy, pro-theocracy, anti-education, anti-human organisation. If you're a conservative in America it means you haven't been paying attention to what Republicans have actually been saying, pushing and voting for.
I put it to the slightly later days of the Tea Party caucus, much of the original points it was formed around were compelling. It got fairly co-opted into something a bit ridiculous, but it was also at the time of social media taking over, and all the downsides of how shouting the loudest gets heard the most, information bubbles, name calling, and a lack of critical thinking. Over the intervening years, that has just been amplified and normalized.. and weaponized. Aspects of it pervade the Democrat party too, to a lesser degree maybe, 'woke' has also been co-opted into areas that are troubling, and gives the MTG types of Republicans a lot of fodder to exploit. One thing those Republicans do extremely well is focus on specific phrases / slogans / keywords, and constantly repeat them. It's a sorry state when many of the Dems are hailing Liz Cheney as a type of hero, for simply not going along with the cult that her party has devolved into. Her, and some rare other 'classic Replublicans' , like Chris Christie, hold many views or voting records, that I would disagree on, but have always (to me) been 'honest' politicians on the right. Just regarding that debate and election, Flowers is the obvious choice on merits, and will lose.

Where I point to it being co-opted into something not quite sitting right, is the perpetual offence at anything from anytime on anyone else's behalf, or trial by social media based on an accusation, or conflating something relatively minor into something worth the liberal version of the death penalty. Conservative was generally a fiscal term against socialist spending ( bad term) , and for keeping government small and out of the home and business, and not putting regulations in place as hindrances to free market / capitalism.

I was in the Courthouse that day and she was amazing. I was embarrassed for the legal team though. Honestly the Judge's body language throughout the proceedings was priceless.
