he was only 17 when debuted in literally 3 units and being the leader of nct dream. he’s a role model. he won trainee of the year (the most hardworking trainee) every single year in SM. he won most favorite trainee voted by staffs too. and when SM showcased him for the first time, people called him the first decent SM Rapper. like SM finally has A RAPPER. it’sa compliment but ofc a pressure too. people have a lot of expectations for him. i remember he joined a survival show ‘High School Rapper’ back then. and that is a show that every mark’s fans won’t rewatch because of how harsh they are to mark as an idol rapper. people have this stereotype that idol rapper can’t really rap. so the amount of prejudice was wild for him. he was juggling between nct 127, nct dream, nct u schedules too when at the same time the program was aired. so it was a hard time. but the members said he never stopped practicing like every second. some members even cried watching him on that show. knowing how much he struggled. a korean couple youtuber who is lucky enough to make a content with nct dream last year was crying when she told us how endearing mark lee is. she said he was just a baby leading another babies but he took care of them so well. like even when the situation is super tiring, he kinda made it fresh again. yes the most interesting thing about this song is that the person who is always laugh, always spread positive energy, always have beautiful mind, also have their own struggle. this song was made long time ago, originally he wanted to release this at the end of 2021 as the gift for his fans. having mark in literally every units last year have been a blessing for us. but he acknowledged how much money, time, energy the fans poured to support him. that is why he released this under SM Station, so the fans can enjoy it comfortably without any burden to buy albums or maybe try to get him win on music shows. he’s so thoughtful.
I 100% agree with that thumbnail. I firmly believe Mark is one of those artists who would thrive in any genre they wanted to do. I mean he is know mainly for his rapping skills outside the fandom and to maybe some czennies. I mean he really could have easily chosen to go down that route, he didn't, but I personally believe this was a better choice cause this was just so emotionally driven. Not that rap can't be but for the message he wanted to portray, going with the lyrics, this was beautiful. The mood and tone he went for really paired well with the sound, surprisingly and lyrics. He is such an amazing artist

Maybe it's called Child cuz he started very young in the industry with too many expectations and pressures he just want to inform us that he has limits too as well as he is still growing as a person and as an artist. He's learning so well. So proud of Mark!!! 😌🥺
That's a very good point knowing that he already finished it in 2019 when he just turned adult then. Also, from a teacher's perspective: why do we individuals have to bind ourselves to the standard of societies or global worldwide of a child? That you are an adult at this age or at this age. Everyone is different. This is the 21st century. Some definitions change over time as we discover new angles of them. The same goes for a child. You are a child of your parents till the day you die. A person can be an adult on the outside but from the inside, they can still be a child. You can also decide for yourself when you feel like you have become an adult because we also have a GROWN child or a child who is growing up.

it's probably called child because he debuted so young, debuted 4 times and pretty much having to work in this industry relentlessly since he was young. i definitely feel like he's expressing how some of his childhood got taken away from him :(
y'all this song is both comfort and celebration to all 'child' out there who is continuously understanding their minds, talent, individuality, or maybe figuring out what they truly want by heart. the lyrics was deep and beautiful as it represents a genuine feeling of curiosity and growth towards themselves and society. kudos to mark lee for being an all rounder. i love you bro. the song was well represented. we all have are own struggles and worries. big hugs to nct lab team! we need more of this.
As a Literature student, I think why it's called "Child" is because at the "child stage" it's known as one of the most innocent points of your life. You are starting to figure out the world, who u are, where you belong etc. Even at this stage where some of us are not considered children anymore, we are expected to have it all figured out and to be able to understand things to the fullest but as you guys stated before the song is relatable because many of us still feel this way, many of us are still trying to figure out the world, who we are etc. So really it's as if you're still a child hence "I'm a child". There is more I would like to say but for the purpose of this not being long.....yh. Also you can disagree if you want, it's just MY opinion.
That’s a great perspective. Many folks seem to think it’s more about forced adultification from debuting so young and the pressure of being an ace more or less, or about the “gifted kid” burnout. Those could both be true, only Mark and those closest to him would know. But your perspective makes sense, esp with him being in his 20s, yeah he has responsibilities but we’re still children to an extent in that age range. The fact that we can get these two different but related interpretations from the song makes it all the more excellent.
@@tosinolorunsola711 That is so true, and I agree with the persons who had other interpretations because I too found myself having many interpretations of the song, but I decided to take it from the point of view where we can fully relate. Overall the song is phenomenal, and as you stated the fact that we can all draw our own interpretations of what the song means to us or how we can relate to it really shows how well it was written.
I'm glad we got to see this side of Mark, too. This song and mv are powerful. He has to be one of the hardest working people, in the industry. And, I'm happy for him. Hopefully, we will get to see more great stuff from him and others.

Mark was 13 when he left his family to train alone in Korea. He was 16 when he first debuted in NCT U then not even 4 months after, he had to debut in two more units, one of which he had to be the leader. He was a literal CHILD when the world suddenly demanded so much from him.
i see the people chasing him as the ones who put a lot of expectations on him/have preconceived notions abt the kind of person they see/Want mark to be and he's saying through this song that hes not like that even though he wants to know how other people see/perceive him. i think the child part of it is about how he got his youth taken away from him when he went to korea to become an idol. not to compare but i kinda have to lol in the dreamies case (besides jisung and renle) they kind of got to be kids? jaemin jeno and haechan went to school and finished middle thru high school. mark had to finish the rest of his adolescent years in a different country and then was immediately thrust into spotlight at 16. so maybe he's reminiscing on the fact that even though he's 22 (i think? international age right?) he doesn't feel like the young adult he should feel like. it's a really great song and even though his experience is niche, i think a lot of people can relate to still feeling like a kid in their early twenties. hell im 20 and when ppl ask how old i am sometimes i mess up and almost tell them im 17. i still feel like a kid and im abt to graduate university in a year and go to grad school. so i like the message that mark's put out and i hope more of his solo music continues to be introspective in a way bc i love his mind and a lot of the stuff he says in interviews is interesting. i went on a tangent but hopefully/maybe this helps understand the song and title better HAHA
he also auditioned to SM as a singer and his music taste i would say matches up with the kind of song this is so its not that i wasn't expecting it but i think if this song Was hip hop/rap heavy i would've been more surprised lol
Glad you guys liked the song!! Mark is incredibly talented, he's one of the lyricists, writers, and composers of the song so it's really personal! The song is likely about him being an idol at such a young age and the pressure of everything and being demanded of lots of stuff while still being a /child/ and such. The mv has a lot of parallels with older mvs that Mark's a part of so it's like he's talking about his past self too, plus some stuff that is significant to him! (based from my interpretation) also, mark plays the guitar and piano! he can sing, rap, and dance and being amazing with all of those :]

I think it's called child because he debuted very young as other comments mentioned, and most idols lose their childhoods trying to make it into the industry but without having actually grown up. the way the lyrics spoke to me is that being a child, you're small and growing, constantly looking up at the much taller adults, trying to understand them and have them understand you when you've not even reached the point of being able to express yourself well. then you have all these adults saying they know you better than you know yourself, telling you how to feel, and you get confused about your identity, thinking over and over again: who am I? and whether you'll become who they want you to be. idols are only kids when they're thrown into an adult world, working a full-time job, and having to take all the pressure and responsibility that comes with it. children need space to grow and develop, but idol life leaves little to no room for that
I'm proud of Mark!!! When I heard him singing in Super M concerts in 2 Fast through RU-vid I'm like "Wait he could see could sing? Thats him?" I know he does have the potential to versatile itself in the industry. He always stood out to me & I'm proud that NCT is having the Lab series for members in units, duos or solos to show more of their talent in song the members themselves wrote. I love that & SM from what it seems to me getting that freedom to share music they made for who knows how long.

So to answer the question why the title is called “child”. Form what we see Mark is expressing a lost childhood or a stolen child to say. The weight of responsibility at a young age , I believe that is the key. So in conclusion he still feels like a child at his age.

The funny thing is how people always expect this from some artists because of how we usually see them (it's not a bad thing!) but then get to hear/see something totally different. Remember that the artist decides what they want and chooses to surprise us when they want to. Mark doesn't want this song to compete as he already wrote this long ago but decided to release it now.

I think child is for how he's insecure about how others perceive him and then he's trying to say like he's just a child and he can't always keep up with others expectations and this is kinda like his inner struggles pouring out like a freaking dam and fuck it made me emotional. But like at the end of the day, he's still just a child because there's so much more into the world and he won't always be able to keep up and that he needs time to grow. Kind of my own theory, lol.
