I think that it is possible to heal from trauma through practicing Buddhism because if we say it is not then it seems that we could only become enlightened if we don't have trauma. But in order to heal from Trauma with Buddhism, one must be a serious practitioner of Buddhism. I believe that most people who practice Buddhism do not practice in a way that will eliminate trauma completely from our lives - so I think a combination of Buddhism and therapy can go a long way to diminish the effects of trauma. From my experience, the more I practice, the less the symptoms of trauma have a hold over me.Also and I know this is a gross generalization - that most people who live in Buddhist countries do not seriously practice the teachings of Buddha - It is like most people in Christian countries do not seriously practice the teachings of Christ. So, just saying that people in a Buddhist country who are subject to wars and repression should be able to overcome the trauma they have faced, does not seem like a logical statement.

That is correct. I think healing trauma is a personal matter, not social thing. So just because a country is Buddhist country, doesn't mean all population in that country are true Buddhists

He's saying it at the end! I just realized that I'm holding onto the story of me as a traumatized person and have been using this as a way to make sense of why I feel the way I feel, especially why I experience all the feelings, situations and experiences labelled (and thus perceived by me) as negative and/or abnormal. This has helped me to be more kind to myself, but still it is an explanation. And this LIFE that we are doesn't need any explaining! And thus we go to a deeper layer if we can see through even the concept of 'trauma'. And the thing we call 'healing' is the process that happens naturally if we can let go of all concepts, because then we can start to relax into all of those difficult feeling through not labelling them as negative and unwelcome anymore. And once these energies are held in our presence, our light, they can flow and dissolve. Now I see WHY the only way out of pain is through! Because when you are right there within the 'pain' you finally see it has no essence. So then the only thing you can do is let the concept of it, that you were holding onto, go. And so there goes your pain...

Meditation alone cannot deal with trauma. I used to think it was all in the mind, I was wrong. Bodywork such as Yoga, neurodevelopmental exercises, EMDR or TRE can help shift things, as well as Feeling and expressive therapies. Meditators have a tendency to just build up a protective wall against feelings.

so good to hear the intelligent parsing here, rather than hopeful generalizations. identifying these specific questions about trauma recovery can lead to more careful consideration and research. thank you!

I think the misunderstanding here is not fully understanding the teachings of Buddhism. It’s not just meditation or prayers, it’s fully immersing yourself into the teachings including embodied practice like breathwork, yoga and service. These are tools used in trauma recovery. I would be careful of following just Western practices such as psychology or medication as those are colonised approaches and can lead to harm (look up Cambodian ‘broken heart’ vs trauma or Prozac Diaries by Behrouzan). As always it depends on the person and their circumstance for the right approach, but treating psychological symptoms without a faith-based (not necessarily religion!) approach does not address the foundation of fear and shame we are trying to heal. I agree with his ending remark though, it’s not about turning back time, but finding a new normal.
