I got my first guitar when I was 13 in 1969. Grand Funk songs were the first rock n roll songs I learned to play. So Mark Farner was in a sense my guitar teacher as I fumbled around learning barre chords (for Heartbreaker) and took my first baby steps on the road to becoming a lead guitarist. That was 55 years ago. I played in bar bands up until the early 80's when life got in the way (wife, kids, needed a real steady well paying job), but I never stopped playing guitar, and never will. I'm 67 now and still play every day. I play in a pick up band on weekends with a bunch of old geezers like me just for the fun of it. And I owe a lifetime of playing guitar to Mark Farner, who was my inspiration more than 50 years ago. I often say that had it not been for the guitar I would have ended up in jail, a mental institution or 6 feet under. My guitars have been my lifelong friends that I turn to in times of trouble. So thanks Mark, for helping me get started down this road.

Both you guys are amazing ! Mark is a great storyteller.Thoroughly enjoyed the show.As a young teenager and a big time Grand Funk fan I remember walking down the block with my friends ,in a snowstorm and getting on my knees bending backwards making like I had a guitar and all of us singing Grand Funk songs.

I think it was the only colored vinyl single I ever saw, bought - 'We're An American Band' on Gold vinyl in a black sleeve ('Certified'). I just heard him say Jann Wenner was just kicked out of the Rock & Roll Board of Commissioners. It's about time. John Mayall still not feeling the Love?! He wrote "White Boy Lost In The Blues" & he did it w/Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee on "Sonny & Brownie. Such a great Song- on the Mo-Fi of Sonny & Brownie A & M' '73 (w/Johnny Winter, Arlo Guthrie, and the best Blues Session Players. NO, it's NOT a lot of 'corn bread & black-eyed peas, corn bread & black-eyed peas. GFunk reminds me of Bad Company & the previous Paul Rodgers band: FREE-& in a good way. Talking about baling Hay - that's a good workout for sure! I was 12(±) & for $10/hr in the fields & throwing 'em up on the trailer, stacking, then up in the Barn - summer in MD East Coast & sweating in a tall Barn seeing that sweet Grandma type Owner of the Farm bringing a tray w/a pitcher of ICE, Water & glasses. If not for that warmth, we might've DIED of Heat stroke or Sun stroke (if there's a difference). At 12? $10/hour? Movin' hay bales? That separates the wheat & chaf. Thanks for the reminder. Seeing that sweet Ol' Granny BOTTLE FEED- HER MOM (100+ YRS OLD & on her lap- telling me what a freak out it was for Her- having to do that w/for her own Mom who suckled Carnation Instant B'fast Drink from a Baby bottle in the early '70s! ✋ I swear it was just bizarre - not freaky but New to see. Whoa.

I took Survival cassette to Vietnam with Me and gave it to our DJ in Dong Ho then they recorded it and gave it back to me cause I went to an Top Secret Island called Diego Garcia in 1973 and they played it and loved it . Closer to Home was everyone’s Best Song . I played it going home from Bangkok Thailand And fell asleep Listening to the whole Album but every body wanted to hear Closer to Home cause we were heading Home after 11 months gone from home . Thank You Mark Farner for making us feel so much Better and two of us that said we Knew Mark personally and they thought we were famous cause we called you our Brother . I was a Navy Seabee as a Construction Mechanic that worked on all equipment everywhere .

I've been a GFR fan since 1970. I own everything they've recorded as well as Farner's two Atlantic solo records. He reminds me of Donald Trump. everything is "me-me-me-wah, wah, wah everybody is out to get me." The same swollen ego. I don't fault Don and Mel for avoiding him. He talks about prayer like he invented it. Who needs to be in a band with that ?
