The North Sea Jazz Beat Summit with Mark Guiliana, Nate Smith & Dave Weckl:
At the North Sea Jazz Cafe, the idea was to talk about deeper assumptions how drums have changed Jazz and other music styles through rhythm. Moderator Ashely Kahn was grasping a bit high with that theme, since the drummers on the couch are making music first, and consider their role humble, as part of a process with other musicians who are just as great.
The first ten minutes you see here focused mainly on the role of the drummer. And this is where you learn from three of the best in how to grasp their idea of making music and playing in a band.
- Nate Smith talks about the role of the drummer and how it relates to the public.
- Dave Weckl goes deeper into the role and the power that a drummer has.
- Mark Guiliana gives exactly the reasons that explain why the video of his Quartet below shows that he is there primarily for the music, and not for being there as a drummer.
The North Sea Jazz Festival is a three day cruise with the finest of the finest in artists. 2017 had Ari Hoenig, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Mark Guiliana and many more of the best played the 43th edition of the annual Jazz coup that overtakes the city of Rotterdam.

Love Mark's outlook on this. Individuality isn't the goal, but tends to come about naturally in pursuit of the best music.

I have followed these guys for many years especially Dave and have learned a lot from him but as a drummer I like to explore and create this is where Mark comes in. I find his technique and creativity very interesting his solos are unique a bit of Jojo Mayer style. He has opened a new direction of approach, feel and groove for me.

I feel that the organic aspect of said players contributions are the determinative result of musics heretofore examined and most proficiently displayed in the context historically mentioned in previous interviews.

Lol. It's funny Mark's view on this is so into what he's actually playing : new stuff, he's the real creator among the 3... He lets himself go to the places his mind wants to go, using the stuff from the past he has already worked on long ago, but taking it to other places, and avoiding clichés. Weckl is more about the job, and history, cause he's the old guy with experience here. He knows all the stuff, but he has never created much. He's into using everything he has worked on (in every solo). And Nate is a beast at playing, and he's trying to create, but let's face it he's not good at it.

Weckl never created much? Are you tripping? He is one of the most innovative drummers, just because he is older now, don't erase his contributions.

Well, I can certainly respect your opinion man. I am not trolling or anything...It is just my honest and humble point of view. I come from a Jazz background and I've studied this music from a fex decades now... Weckl has an outstanding technique because he is a hard worker. Always has. I was working on his stuff 20 years ago for sure, and I respect the guy deeply. But what would you say he has created? Around me, he was never liked by any of the best drummers I know, nor by any musicians I've met. His music is not the best either. And except for Corea no one plays with him. And it is because : bad taste. Soundwise/musicwise. Just my opinion you know... I just think there are far more interesting musicians than him by far. Mark Guiliana isn't the best musician either, but he is so unpredictable... I think his mind is freer. He does what his musical mind wants, and isn't bound to past technique. He looks ahead, and that is more what I'm looking for in listening music.

@@cab88888 why would you say Nate isn't good at creating? i've been watching his stuff endlessly and i've never got bored of it, obviously i've seen and heard good and bad stuff, but overall, he is one of the best musicians out there. Maybe i need a more objective point of view.

@@kleidos Don't get me wrong, they are all amazing, and all "able" to create. But to me, the stuff I said was more about my feeling on their ability to play something fresh and new. Weckl I've known for a long time and I've been a fan some 23 years ago, but it doesn't feel "new". It is impressive and sometimes I go "wow!" but it sounds like good old Dave Weckl, and to my ears, it can become a little bit boring pretty quickly. I love Nate Smith, and the first time I saw him was live with Dave Holland in 2002, he still had the dreadlocks! He was amazing! Now in terms of rudiments and language, again, I don't feel I'm witnessing something that no one has done before. And that isn't the case with Mark, who is a very unexpected musician, because that is what defines his way to think music. He wants to create, in a way the two others just don't, and can't... Just my opinion heh! :)

@@cab88888 Well, I ve honestly read all the writtens here. I agree with most of your opinions and I would say Marcus Gilmore is also highly unpredictable in terms of creating new sound, but the way of his doing it is utterly different from Mark, more chaotic, more eastern( I mean the microtimes and duolet kind of things) and maybe more complex. Two different but unprecedented perspectives. I would like to know if there are more unique guys out there like them :)
