The psychological term gaslight comes from a 1938 play by the same name. The story is about an unfaithful and deceitful husband who, through a series of manipulations (I can provide spoilers for whoever wants them), attempts to make his wife think she is going crazy and imagining things that are actually happening. So to gaslight is to manipulate someone in a way that makes them doubt themselves, their logic, or their very sanity.
