Johnson's goal at the end of the first period is the greatest hustle play in sports history. I am sure Mark was pretty beat after giving so much in the biggest game of their lives, but to find that extra gear and sneak by as the Soviets were watching the seconds tick down changed everything. If he doesn't hustle, Tretiak does not get pulled and if the US falls down by 2 goals, they would not be able to come back. I am really surprised that Al Michaels made a mistake. Mark Johnson's second goal of the game did not give the US the lead. It tied the game at 3. But, I totally agree with Al, that without Mark, the Miracle does not happen that night.
Johnson also led the Badgers to their best season ever--37 wins--including the NCAA title under his dad's guidance. But the media gave most of the limelight to the East Coaster.
