It does work as a metaphor, though. The "rumble" is the multiversal nonone-ever-dies mess left by Endgame, which leaves superhero films, including Fox's, with both nowhere and everywhere to turn in terms of their narratives. Think of it as standing on the shoulders of Marvel's giant, except the giant trip, stumbled, and fell over a long time ago.

It was a critical and commercial success, it successfully closed out a huge unweildy narrative, gave a nice ending for Evans and Downey Junior and.... and.... it was called Endgame! Highlander 4 was titled Endgame, but they still felt the need to make a 5th one titled 'The Source'. There's precedent for that title meaning nothing! To say Reynolds, Jackman and Levy didn't care about making the movie is a bit bizarre given it's very clearly been a passion project for all of them. Ryan Reynolds is really the only reason a Deadpool movie franchise even exists. I thought the film had some clear issues but it was ultimately a blast. I think we live in a fairly remarkable time where a movie so squarely aimed at a comic book audience, which requires such a vast amount of knowledge to fully understand, will likely end up the highest grossing R rated movie of all time. And hey, the beauty of this stuff is that if you're like me, you can rewatch and adore Lost Highway one night, and then see and enjoy this movie the next.

Your first sentence I absolutely agree with. Regardless whether you like the film or not, you can't disagree that Hugh and Ryan doing masses of brilliant PR campaign and coming across as genuinely enthusiastic and engaged in speaking with everyone played a huge part in this (From the UK perspective, I highly recommend watching Ali Plumb's interview and even the Radio 1 Unpopular Opinion video). From country to country, outside of the fantastic work done by others this amazing junket was a large factor in such a strong early opening. That being said, I still think The Fall Guy's marketing was the standout this year.

Being human beings and all watching movie after movie, they're not always going to get the most out of every single one, even if the movie gives the target audience a lot to love. I'm not really giving a movie it's best chance if I'm labouring to count how many times I laugh out loud; the act of measuring that sort of thing will change the resulting experience. But I can understand why a critic might need to have a system or rule of thumb like that, just for some kind of a north star to work from.

@@Art-is-craft lol if anything there's too many movies that try to be ''fun so people will enjoy''. All of Marvel's cinematography is built upon that and it kind of ruined that whole genre of movies because it all feels fake and oversaturated now. That being said, Deadpool is a bit different, the self-referential tone and R-rated nature of it gives it some value. All the other Marvel schlock that actually takes itself seriously while still trying to masquerade as ''fun'' can go in the trash.

Problem is that, for all the sweary jokes, the humour is utterly toothless. Surface-level self-referential punchlines with no bite. “Ooh, look at us, we’re poking fun at Kevin Feige!” - yeah, with jokes he’ll have approved himself. Crack a few laughs at the various X-Men films - but mention, say, Brett Ratner or Bryan Singer? No, of course they don’t, they wouldn’t touch that with a ten-foot barge pole. A hollow shell of the punky anarchic rebellious character Deadpool is supposed to be.

Deadpool & Wolverine is delightful entertainment. An over the top spectacle, a marvellous rollercoaster but an endearing experience that focuses on character and emotion when it needs to. The script keeps a fine balance between humour and drama. It never feels like it’s leaning too far to one side. There’s jokes and gags aplenty, with Reynolds delivering his best performance yet as the “merc with the mouth.” Ryan’s respect and passion for the source material pays off in spades. It’s testament to his dedication to the role because Deadpool finally evolves past the wisecracks and into something more tangible and sympathetic. He’s still Deadpool but he’s all grown up and he’s back with a new companion in wolverine. If I had doubts about Jackman returning to the role, all concerns are effectively dismissed. This is perhaps his best performance, outshining his performance in Logan by a small margin. Jackman is magnificent here adding depth and nuance to wolverine with such distinction, it has to be seen, to be believed. The oddball bromance between these two is the central focus of the film, both carrying the narrative with finesse. It’s clear this film was made with compassion and dignity because the film has heart. The emphasis on making Wade and Logan two broken, dysfunctional men, both on a path of redemption, both heroes at their core, is what makes Deadpool & Wolverine a classic entry in the superhero genre . It’s pure unadulterated fun, that packs many surprises, is hyper-violent, stylistically glorious but most importantly it’s emotionally driven. The film does enough to keep a smile on your face throughout its runtime. Deadpool and wolverine reminds us that comicbook movies can be fun and poignant at the same time, in my opinion that’s the best kind. Go see it. You’ll have a great time.

I get that you have your opinion and critique which I quite enjoy, however, as a marvel fan and specifically mcu, this movie is and had been made for the fans, the ones that love the speculation regarding actors potentially in certain roles, that have invested in franchises that haven't got off the ground or their pay offs. I am a dad of 2 young children, 1 of whom is autistic, so I seldom have a chance to escape to the cinema to see films, but do for the mcu and going to see this last night was the best night I've had for a while. I do sometimes feel that the reviews of films such as this would benefit from having a guest or someone who is invested and a fan of the franchise. While I appreciate that everyone has (and rightfully should) their own opinion, these films are at a stage where their intended audience are people fully invested in the full franchise. I personally dislike superhero movies and have avoided them like the proverbial plague, but I love deapool movies ( and to a lesser extent guardians of the galaxy) because they're played for laughs and don't take themselves in any way seriously. There's nothing more tragic than watching accomplished actors delivering ridiculous lines seriously as I see in clips from the rest of the genre. I saw this movie yesterday, and am taking my two adult sons next week for the 4dx experience and can guarantee they'll enjoy this movie as much as I already have. One positive about this review is that I often find myself agreeing with Kermodes views to the point I've started to wonder if I'm incapable of independant thought and am just blindly absorbing his opinions as my own. The teen boys in the cinema seats laughed a lot. I didn't laugh much, but I am not big on Marvel characters so the in-jokes went over my head. There's no peril in two characters with the superpower of instant healing knocking lumps out of each other so it has to lean on humour a lot. At two hours long, the humour was stretched thin. Great for devoted fans in the right demographic and that's where it's jokes are aimed.

Honestly, I think this film knew that it wasn't going to be a hit with critics, it knew its target audience and mainly exists for its cast members to have fun, as Mark says, in the wreckage of those past characters and films. And I've got to be honest, it's the most "fun" I've had in the cinema for a long time. I'm in my thirties now, and effectively grew up with the Hugh Jackman era of superhero films, which made all of the callbacks and cameos feel like something of a fond farewell to the Fox franchises. Worth a watch if you're of a similar ilk to me, but if you've never been fond of superhero films, it's probably not for you and the cameos won't mean much.

Kermode has always been my go to reviewer and the addition of Mayo into the mix makes these reviews even better. I don't always agree with the reviews though and this is one of those times. My wife and I watched it last night with a quite full screening. We don't go to the cinema (pictures, in my younger days) because the cost and movie choices. The age range of the audience was quite broad which was interesting.l, and it wasn't just 'dudes'. We laughed a lot throughout as was many other people. There were a few cheers at the 'nerd' moments too. I grew up reading a lot of comics and have read Deadpool too. The references and fan easter eggs were brilliant and came thick and fast. At the end we came out fully entertained and the ticket price plus overpriced consumables felt worth it. Very few people left as the credits rolled. It did feel very hyped on the long run up to the release. I tend to respond negatively to hype but tbh this film will earn Disney more money than they have seen in a long time. If people aren't aware of the comics etc then it will miss the mark quite a bit, but this movie isn't aimed at them. I would say that even non-comic fans but fans of 'Don't make me angry' Jason Statham movies will still enjoy it.

Just saw this and understand why MK said what he did, for anyone else who likes the DP movies and have a memory good enough to remember a few MCU characters it will be a blast. The cameos are just that, apart from one which is substantive, the jokes are what you can expect and the fight scenes are great. I disagree about when it gets "serious" was a problem. Mark is a bit jaded for these films.

Glad Mark didn't hate it at least. Surely, Mark's criticisms of aspects such as no one can die and 'It's gone on too long' are the things people like and accept from the comics. I stopped collecting comics at the end of the 90's but I follow some stuff online and basically it's the same characters now as came about in the 50's/60's. Sometimes they die, usually they come back. Claremont's run plus a few other stories have dominated X-comics to this day.

Deadpool has always been the voice of the fans- lambasting studios for making terrible decisions, taking shots at bad movies or performances, even voicing the thoughts people might have about actors’ other projects or personal lives The whole thing felt like Marvel taking a breath and acknowledging that it hasn’t been as good since Endgame; and that was kind of a relief to see. Lays the groundwork a bit better now for the end of Phase 5 Oh and the “no-one can die” point? Many people die… and they ain’t coming back

It lags a little after the initial burst of excitement but picks up again and is great fun. The film isn't aimed at 'too cool for school' Kermode and that's fine by me. It's a solid 7.5 out of 10 for me and many others would put it much higher. We had a great time watching it.

I enjoyed it but with the sheer number of deep cuts (not all of them recent mind you) it really is one that's more for a certain type of fan who will delight in seeing on screen and will get 95% of the jokes. It does have some top notch nerdy fan service. I will say this, it's one of the few films that's third in a franchise that I can honestly say I enjoyed (and was worth the ticket price) and certainly the only one with an X Man in it. And hey, I was pleased he finally got NSYNC in the soundtrack.

I'm hearing similar things from all my favorite reviewers, and now I'm worried. Deadpool *can* be more than just a meta comedian 24/7, in which I think the sequel really tapped into the potential of the character, but this is kinda sounding like the worst case scenario for a franchise like this, where it just becomes 'Member Berries The Movie. And even when this does make money, this is NOT what Marvel needs right now to get its juice back, because once you're at the point where you have to rely on nostalgia, then your future doesn't end up looking bright.

Unfortunately this marks the new direction the MCU is taking which is one that’s heavily reliant on cameos in service of actual good writing (building up to Secret Wars which is said to bring back a tonne of old characters). Also agree with other comments here in that the Deadpool films will age badly - if you didn’t grow up watching superhero films of the late 90s/early 00s then most of the cameos and in-jokes will be meaningless

I saw this yesterday at the behest of Number one son. It was so self-referential it disinterred not only Wolverine, but also the spirits of the French postmodernists, who arose shouting, "hey, wait for us! There weren't this many free-floating signifiers when we were alive!" Was the irony that the "anchor beings" are anchored to nothing but in-jokes? My wife, in an effort to be kind, said "it's a bit tongue in cheek". The trouble is that you can't tell where the tongue starts and the cheek begins. Another trouble is that in saying that, I end up sounding like a character in the film. End of civilisation is right.

It's a huge piece of fan service and in that regard, it's one of the best superhero films ever. But importantly: it's also the best Marvel film since Endgame. For a franchise that has been languishing under audience fatigue, it's the shot in the arm needed to get viewers interested again.
