Having never heard anything about this film just happened to catch it on Sky Movies and was blown away. Really thought provoking and the final scene is beautiful. Recommended.

Michael Pitt is a pretty good actor. He was really good on Boardwalk Empire. But I do not know why so many people "hate" this guy. I think he is one of the few actors that cares about the quality and the art of acting. However this movie sounds like a film I will watch on a rainy day with a nice glass of Shiraz.

Luvie1980 Me too, but the original was a lot more intense.

Onmysheet ow I love the original, I love German films. However I am happy that the original director made the remake instead of some Hollywood hack.

Luvie1980 The original should have been american anyway, but Haneke didn't have the funds at the time. But im glad that didn't stop him, and did it in austrian. Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Mühe played the couple brilliantly.

Brit Marling's monologues come across a bit pretentious, but she is a joy to watch.

Biologist's already have a pretty good idea how the eye evolved & sounds like this film is spreading more misinformation in the name of entertainment. Also Marks belief in intelligent design or creationism as its otherwise known which he has spoke of in the past with the whole march of penguin or what makes the wind blow remarks, all of which are quite rudimentary & easy to explain leads me to believe any rational person would probably be driven crazy by this film left thing "Christ not this again..."

That's why it is called "science fiction". Obviously, no serious scientist would cite this movie in a paper, but it's fun to watch.

That's funny. I published a book about this topic last year, with a similar plot in overall pattern, an almost identical book cover to this films poster (!) and even similar characters. The main difference being my book was about the fact that God, as defined in classic monotheistic terms, is neither provable or unprovable - by definition - as is the epistemic basis of empirical science. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive but both, in their base assumptions, are metaphysical and can be accepted or rejected (and then extrapolated from) but not proven. The main problem with this film for me (outside of a striking and disturbing similarity with my own work!) is it succeeds in being dramatically effective while being intellectually trite and reductive. You can't prove or know God exists or doesn't you can only accept or reject the notion as a matter of faith just like you can't prove or disprove that the only things that exist are those that can be measured (you would have to measure and demonstrate, literally, everything to do that). Believe or choose but don't kid yourself that you know or can know.

sk8terdcorazon Hi. It's available on Kindle and Kobo. It is currently in editing for paperback to be published this February. It's available here: www.amazon.co.uk/Gnosis-Book-One-Spread-Peter-ebook/dp/B00GEFTQBE/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1421324802&sr=1-1&keywords=gnosis+book+one

Surely God exists in the concept? We have a word that describes 'something' that many people have different opinions bout what exactly that word constitutes and some many don't believe exists. But if the concept is their to be discussed, then it exists. You can't discuss something that doesn't exist. The real question is 'does God only exist in concept or is one of the opinions correct?' Plus, working out how an eye evolves does not disprove God, it only disproves someone's idea of what proves God. The whole idea about 'us' as creatures made of atoms, questioning our existence, me typing this right now, that's what is absurd!

Does anyone know what they were on about with the Penguins comment?
@benthespread
@benthespread 9 лет назад
it was in regard to Marks comments that the Penguins in the film March of the Penguins behavior was as the result of some divine intervention or intelligent designer & not though evolutional process. basically he doesnt understand how it works i guess..maybe he should stick to reviewing them
@christophermurtagh345

oh right, thanks. Yeah I guess there are a lot of things like that, ridiculously complicated behaviors that have came about from evolution, bit by bit. I think it makes a lot more sense the scientific way than god deciding deliberately to put animals through lots of needless hardship.

Mike Chahill seems like another M. Night Shamalan in the making -- a director with a sense of style sufficiently clever that for a while he manages to con the audience into thinking he's far deeper than he actually is. My sister the biochemist doesn't work with eyes, but no doubt will still scream with laughter at the sections where he attempts to discuss eye evolution.

In the last 2 minutes, the message of this film becomes clear. To paraphrase: 'It doesn't matter what the data shows. We know better...of course there's reincarnation.' It completely failed to win me over to this point of view with its pseudoscience and contrived sequence of events.
