This is like getting that special bottle of brandy out on a winters evening infront of a crackling fire. The moment sinks in and you just know everything is alright. Beautiful
Yes, it’s such a beautiful piece. And the raspy tones of a more senior musician (no offence, Mark - you still rock!) add to the melancholy. I listen to this often because it soothes.
This song is both hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking...in a way that saddens me to be thinking that my life, at 67, is mostly behind me now...and that I missed out on my Juliet. I still think of her, 50 years later, and the kiss we never shared.
I was married in High School. Not because of Preg. Anyway. We made it 27 years. When she left me; 15 yrs. ago; I NEVER heard from her again. In any way. This song makes me cry even today.
Saw Knopfler in Belfast years ago....the stage fell into darkness, he was sitting with a steel guitar on his lap and a spot light from the back was shinning on him....he reflected the beam around the theater and audience... The place was in silence and then he struck up with the start of Romeo and Juliet.!!!! The place fucking erupted...... A fantastic night with a fantastic guy............
teamfab I seen him too and I though he was poor. I love his songs but he seemed very disinterested to have been there. Though I love his songs. And would still go to see him again. Maybe he just had an off night.
No autotune, no click tracks, no editing...................Just a legend and artist, a guitar, a piano and a shaker. Mark's voice is aging perfectly, and this song brings a whole new meaning as we all age..........it's bittersweet.
Beautifully said chum - wish I had the elequoence of yourself. I think this is one of the most perfect songs ever. This acoustic rendition taking it to a whole different level of poignancy. So pure it hurts ( still miss you Sandra)
This version actually made me super said. Mark's older voice actually makes it sound like an older person, telling the story of long lost lovers. Makes a stronger impact than the original recording when all the band was younger.
I listened to this song for the fourth time and started thinking about my wife who died three years ago and my heart hurts and my head hurts and the tears are running down my cheeks and I Miss her So Much. I can't write any more. 😪
Hi, I first listened to this song when I was 10 years old, I was pretending I was a ballerina dancing about the lounge area in the children’s home at the time. This was my first musical experience. We were never encouraged to listen to music,or anything else for that matter, we were the unwanted children of an era where if you were conceived out of wedlock you were taken away from your parents, adopted,if you were lucky. But for me, a sentence from hell within an institution ( children’s home). This song that I happened to hear on the radio, just once , was my saviour in believing that there was something beautiful, creative, something more than the misery I experienced at that particular time going on in the world outside, from then on, I promised myself that I would sing, play, write, to all of the other children and give them a sense of comfort. Iam a Nurse now, I still sing to patients and still see the profound effects that music can bring to people of all ages and backgrounds. Thanks Mark.🙏
The best thing about Mark Knopfler is the fact that his voice is so unique , he never stretched it too hard which is why it’s still the same now as it was 30 years ago. True inspiration to me.
Are you serious, still the same now as it was 30 years ago. You need to get down to Specsavers and get your hearing aid checked or at least turn the thing on.
@@certifiedbiker580 No it isn't. His voice in the 90s was pretty shot as he himself has said multiple times. He quit smoking and has been a much more melodic singer since then.
@@certifiedbiker580 Now you've changed your claim. I'm not saying he's a brilliant singer. I'm saying he's a technically better one than he was, which is true.
The best part of this particular version to me is that he leaves out the verse where Juliets dreams come true and she leaves Romeo. In that verse she falls for chains of silver and she falls for chains of gold... and pretty strangers with the promised they told. Leaving this verse out seems to make the song more poignant and reflective... an old man remembering his life, keeping the good and forgetting the bad... really amazing stuff...
The song lends itself completely to the fragility of his aging voice, it shows how timeless the narrative is and the line "ill love you till i die" . That comes one day for all of us.
I found my true Romeo when I was 25, but he was already taken. After 5 devastating years we realized and accepted one can't built your happiness on someone else's heartbreak. So we went our seperate routes. I'll be 63 this year, after almost 40 years I still remember and cherish our every ❤ moment spend together❤ ❤
@@davidr3789 I've always thought that Lennon & McCartney were over rated & arogant. Imo the best one of the beatles was George Harrison. He also, again imo, wrote the best songs.
Shout to reach the soul is an expression in itself, like an extra thing. But this does not make shouting a bad thing. You guys are a bit not so having a clue lol :) and I do get your feel and what you meant and that is what matters. OR what does not not matter (2x not) since it only appears as if it was the case that it wouldn't matter, by what I said which is though not even true.
I guess everyone has a Juliet somewhere in their past. I threw it all away several years ago. This song speaks to everyone who has loved and lost...and that's pretty much all of us right?
"This song speaks to everyone who has loved and lost...and that's pretty much all of us right?" Pretty much, but not all. I can still appreciate the song and musicianship though.
I think his voice is perfect for this now more than ever. It's a song that should be sung older, looking back at that one love we wanted more than anything in this world to last, but lost.
Mark Okern i think both work...as someone older looking back at a distant love, and as someone younger...maybe reflections of a recent relationship. Either way, we’re talking about Mark...so it’s perfect
I sat in the second row at a concert where he performed this a couple of years ago, and it made me cry. Such a beautiful love song, so perfectly delivered by an amazing musician ❤
03.12,2022. This song was on my walkman cassette in Sri Lanka and India in 1983. Most beautiful love ever. For you Philippe. Every time. Loved you for so long. Next lifetime. .
Hi my grandson made a cover of this ( 15 years old at the time). Would love to know what you think ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PENye5es74Q.html
"And all I do is miss you"....how his voice breaks when he sings that line. This is such a beautiful song, heartfelt. When it came out, I was making a total mess of my life at 18. I met my Juliet, but couldn't get her to be mine. Yet. I turned my life around a year later, and we got together. We have been married for 35 years now, and this song just brings me to tears. So beautiful. So thankful.

You are so lucky....life gave you a 2nd chance...35 years together confirm my saying...
For some weird reason (I wasn't listening to any music at the time) last night I was thinking about how outstanding Mr Knopfler's work is. What's amazing is that if you ignore the fact that the music is sensational and how well he plays, and then just look at the lyrics - he really puts together some sweet lines and tells amazing stories. Songs like this and Telegraph Road for example, do not need videos - it's like reading a good book, the lyrics and music help your imagination create the scenes in your head. Rock on MK, looking forward to the new album!
A song that is beautiful and heart breaking sad in one and I love listing to it. I am 72 and ‘lost’ my Juliet 23 years and 3 months ago------------because I was foolish, thick and did not listen to the right people. I still think and love her to this day.
I remember when this song came out. I was in high school. Makes me realize just how old I am when I see Mark balding and heavy. He was a skinny kid with a headband and a wicked guitar.
We have to look forward in life. If we look back sadness is all that is left despite all the happy moments we all had. This song is an ode to all the Romeos and Juliets we miss in our lives.
How can anyone give this a thumbs down? Mark Knopfler is a true musical genius and this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. This rendition is also beautiful. The thumbs down people must be deaf.
Thank you Mark. My wife and I feel like we've grown up with you. We've listened to this song together for 40 years and we are still " doin the stars together ".
Mark Knopfler was the first guitar hero I discovered back in the 80's when I was just a kid. My father brought home the Brothers in arms album and it absolutely blew me away. In those days MTV used to play Dire Straits videoclipa very often. Seen Mark as an old man makes me realize how old I am and how much time has passed. He's still a true guitar hero. Thanks BBC for this material. Sorry for my english. Greetings from Argentina.
The time is wrong, is such an undeniable truth that we feel about life as we age. As an older man, Mark renders his wonderful song with such regret and tenderness. Beautiful.
A few minutes ago my 6 year old granddaughter asked her rumored to be terminal GP, "how old are you?" "64 - "65 in a few months." I saw the thumbnail and asked her if she wanted to hear one of the best guitar players ever? She kind of watched while Papa told her something like, " my best friend told me about this singer and group when I was in my last year of high school. '76, lets see 24 and 22 -- 46 years. He has been doing this all that time, and he's made me happy so many times - wonderful..." And by then I was choking and tearing up and having trouble talking to her as much as getting lost in my heart honoring what Mark and these guys gifts have meant to me... Thanks
Just watch this closely. All the hands playing instruments are aged, experienced and have played so much music over the years. Yet they play every note with so much maturity & sincerity. You will never such hands in the future. Take good note and listen to their music with your hearts. Such timeless music....
They certainly don’t come around very often. Less so in the future as most youngsters are far too distracted to commit the time and passion needed to be this good. Talent will only take you so far..
Mark is probably my most favorite of all guitar players. I love this song how it gets me emotionally everytime I hear it. You feel this,,not just hear it.
Absolutely, I am a couple of months short of 70 years old, and this song always makes me weep ! - I want to play this with my 16 year old grandson (me on Keyboards him on Guitar) but I know I'll get too emotional to finish it. Here's to all our Juliet's wherever they may be. We still miss you, it was just that the time was wrong.
@@bernardcook6542 I hear ya. I'm 62. I can play parts of it on my keyboards ( I have too many LOL .) I just close my eyes and relax. A beautiful heartfelt song.
You can never have too many keyboards ! I currently have 3 and am looking to get another (- possibly a used Yamaha Electone HS8) - I also have 7 guitars and I'm still enjoying them all. My 16 year old grandson and I have been sharing music projects online during lockdown as we both use the same DAW software and have the same wide tastes in music.
I can remember the first time I ever heard this song - on my SONY Walkman with headphones - on a bus from Tokyo to the Airport in 1981. Had just bought the Walkman on the Ginza - and got Making Movies and Eagles Greatest hits as my two new cassettes to get me back to the US. I had never heard music this clear before - and the finger snap made me laugh - as I felt like I was in the studio. I loved the song before it was over - and I've never stopped loving it.
What we are getting here is decades of experience and a master musician. Imagine music without Mark Knopfler. Actually, don't do that.. it is not a nice thought. Mark is a legend and his performances will naturally be different now than they were 20 years ago, but that is also a nice thing.
This song like so many dire straits songs never gets old.. brought a tear to my eye in the 70's and still does today! "Tunnel of love" takes me right back to my teens, spending summer hols and most week ends at Whitley Bay.. thanks Mark! 👍
This man has written so many beautiful and memorable songs. The Alchemy Live album and the band's performance at the Mandela Day Concert - being joined by Eric Clapton make me so grateful
My wife and I saw Mark live at the Capital Arena in Nottingham, he was on the same bill as Bob Dylan, we walked out when Dylan came on, Mark will always have that quality, Dylan has lost it. When we got married my wife bought me a Golden Heart necklace because being an engineer I refused to wear finger rings, I still have the necklace although my wife has sadly died. Live on forever Mark, life wouldn't be the same without you.
Many years ago I saw an interview where he explained how the music was more important for him than the show. That as an old man he would simply sit on a chair and play the guitar rather jump around on stage. Now he sits on a chair and plays, and I listen. I will still listen when I am too old to dance around.
heard this on the record, heard it on the cassette tape, heard it on the CD player and then on the mp3 player and now on RU-vid!!! Never gets old!!! Always a love struck Romeo when it comes to Mark Knopflers songs!!!
I knew about dire straits, heard some of their songs. 3rd Lockdown, 2021, discovered this song and dire straits properly. One of my fav songs at the moment and always will be.
Yes indeed, I've played for over 50 years - also now crap (due to approaching middle age 🤣) - that's why I've gone back to playing keyboards. Mark is way up there with Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore and Dave Gilmour. Long may they continue to enthral us !
