I never, ever tire of Mark Lewinson interviews, he is a absolutely genuine man who tells it exactly as it is. I’m on my second reading of “Tune in”, it’s a wonderful reference book as well.
Mark Lewisohn is a complete marvel. This man is the definitive encyclopaedia of all things Beatles related. I cannot wait for volume 2 and I have every faith we will have it within the next 5 years. I just hope he gets to finish the 3 books. Marks knowledge and detail is quite simply unparalleled...keep going Mark!!🙏♥️🥊x
Thanks so much for the painstaking work you’ve put into The Beatles. TUNE IN vol. 1 is pure wonderstuff, you’ve put a few old myths away, and the truth is more interesting than the fabrications out there. When future historians look back on our time, they’ll have to weigh things like Viet Nam and civil rights matters in alongside the social changes brought by ‘The Lads’. Your work will be seen as indispensable as F Scott Fitzgerald’s is in understanding The Jazz Age. Some of us recognize this now. Just brilliant work, I’m so looking forward to vol. 2 of Tune In. In the meantime, interviews like this one help curb the cravings for vol 2.
Nate Wilcox clearly did his homework for his Tune In interview. I appreciate that! The one thing that irked me was how he characterized How Do You Do It? Although the Beatles did not want to record that song, it was not fluff. It is a catchy pop song that was a global number one for Gerry and the Pacemakers. It should not be dismissed as trivial. Writing a good pop song is very, very difficult. Frankly, I don't see much difference between How Do You Do It? and From Me To You. They are both great pop songs from that era.
From what I've heard, the Beatles were the ones who really didn't like it. Personally, I dig it as well. It's not on par with a lot of their other stuff, but that's a high bar.
Nate Wilcox, not heard of him before. Although knowledge signalling interviewers (interrupting to show they know something) can ruin an interview, he was obviously immersed in the subject and had augmented his knowledge from the book, so his 'questions' were fuller than others, and he didn't interrupt to show off.
Lewisohn needs at least 4 years maybe five to write the part 2. It’s overwhelming with expectations at a high level. Tough sledding it’s the history the recording sessions. And the magic

I will repeat a comment made on the Courtney interview - since Nate actually covers this subject - which is to hear Mark's view as to why neither Kim Bennett or Sid Coleman of Ardmore & Beechwood appear to have attempted to make any contact with Brian Epstein to let him know of the efforts they - particularly Kim - went to in order to get the songs they bought recorded, which was the reason why George Martin was 'instructed' to send a contract to The Beatles before even seeing them - as per Mark's very interesting revelation in Tune In, repeated here. Surely one of them should have been at Abbey Rd on their first session in June 1962 to meet them and tell them 'it was us that got you here'. It also seems somewhat odd that Len Wood gives George Martin the credit for discovering the group in an EMI publicity hand out reproduced in Mark's 'Chronicles' book.
Beatles fans, I personally have stumped Mr. Lewisohn! In "The Complete Beatles Chronicle" Mr. Lewisohn did not state when and where The Beatles filmed the "All Together Now" insert at the end of the "Yellow Submarine" animated movie. John is now wearing his hair longer and parted in the middle and Ringo wearing a moustache. The only thing I can say for certainty, is that this clip was filmed when all four Beatles returned from India in March,1968. Does anyone out there know when and where The Beatles were filmed? It was truly the last time The Beatles truly enjoyed being together. What incredible charisma is projected by The Beatles on this clip!!!
The comment from ML that Paul made the Beatles a success is totally rediculous and laughable. John Lennon stated what songs he wrote when he was alive. Clearly, the majority of the hit singles from 1963 thru 1965 were 80% all John's songs. The album A Hard Days Night was a tour d force of John's songs that made the movie great. Knowing how to play 1000 instruments has nothing to do with writing a great song.
What he means is Paul's more easy-going character was absolutely necessary. John *could* be charming, but he was abrasive and self-destructive too and without Paul a band fronted by John alone would have been unlikely to make it anywhere near as big.

Seems Paul clan write great songs as well as play a 1000 instruments.
