For Mark Lilla, Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again“ is an expression of reactionary thinking. The hope for a better future is being sacrificed for a nostalgia for the Golden Age. According to the historian of ideas, the Democrats are partially to blame for the return of this zeitgeist in the USA.

The American intellectual Mark Lilla provided a much-noticed but also disputable analysis after the election of Donald Trump: The Democrats have focused too much on identity politics, minority rights and political correctness.
Therefore, not only the needs of the much-debated “simple man“, but also the fact that no society can survive without being a community were forgotten . The Democrats sacrificed the sense of unity that is cultivated by slogans such as “Make America Great Again“ to the praise of individualism; they practiced a sort of “reaganism for the Left“.
Lilla is convinced that, if the US Democrats don’t want to go unsung, they have to redevelop an interest in the origins of community, without succumbing to the nostalgia that characterises reactionary thinking.
Barbara Bleisch is talking to the disputed intellectual in Berlin about the future of the USA and about the potential lessons the experiences that are made in the USA can teach us in regards to the debate about home and nationalism in Europe.
