Love the fact that you interviewed him. I met Mark when I was a teen when he was the speaker at a youth group, BEFORE he was famous famous. Then I met you, Kirk, in Decatur Alabama at a Love is Worth Fighting For conference and there I was able to ask you a question, how do you witness to an atheist. The person I was asking for was my nephew who was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma a year or so later. He was saved before he passed away. Praise God!

I grew up singing mostly hymns, and the church I attend now also sings a lot of old songs. My kids also have a love and appreciation for music and lyrics that are rich and varied. That being said, I understand Mark's admonition to avoid judging other people's motives. I was visiting a church that had a worship team singing boring tunes and "shallow" lyrics. I was feeling sort of disgusted when I clearly heard the Holy Spirit ask me, "What if those people actually MEAN the words they're singing? Who is worshipping right now, you or them?" I was humbled! Now, I still love my good old hymns and gospel songs, but I can respect other worshippers. ❤

Lately I have enjoyed listening to Esther Mui, sing the Word of God. When my grandchildren were infants/toddlers I would have them listen to memory verse songs from Shannon R Linville . So wrong to a degree. David sang and praised Jesus. Praise is another way to display our love for Jesus, as long as it is for Him and not our glory. I challenge you to find in the Bible where it says singing to the Lord gets in the way or our worship. You won’t find it.

As I walk through the stores, I always seem to be singing/humming quietly the hymns and I don’t even realize it until i stop and think. Usually, that song has to do with what I’m going through at that time.

I loved finding this interview. Love both of your ministries. Mark and I are pretty much on the same road at different places. I've written a handful of songs, love the hymns, grown to love directional worship music TO the Father and Son, and LOVE a rounded worship service. So many churches either sing only hymns, or none at all. I've been in both. My ministry is to "sing a new song", and some of those "new songs' are really born out of the '70's and '80's. They are new to a lot of people reaised in churches just like Mark's and my own. It's a wonderful walk we have with our Lord. Always showing us His mercies new, every morning.

As a teacher who works with teenagers daily. The lyrics is not what brings people to music it is the sound. I think the way to keep the hymns in church is the way Gaither did it. Modernize the music to fit contemporary music with the old hymns and you can bring them to them. As they listen to them with a contemporary sound, they will hear the lyrics and get the message. I remember hearing Gaither talk about doing it and I think that is why people of all ages know Gaither music and he has blessed so many people. You can find where people have done that with Amazing Grace. If someone does that to the other hymns this generation will know them.

I am grateful to say that I am a born again Christian and have been since I was 19.......I praise God for my dear precious and of course hilarious and nutty Mark Lowry!!!!!! and all the Gaither Vocal Band also just every man or woman sold out to Jesus in many ways!!!!!! I pray for their ministry and that God would fill all their hearts with much obedience and strength to much glorify the wonderful name of Jesus Christ in all they say and do!!!!! To God Be All The Glory!!!!! however folks if you don’t know Christ as your savior then it burdens my soul to think that you are headed for a terrible place called Hell where the Bible says the fire is never quenched and the worm dies not! Folks you are not promised tomorrow! If you want to know how to be saved from this horrible reality then please by all means don’t hesitate to comment right back so I can lead you to the savior! 2 Corinthians 6:2 clearly states “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation!” And Hebrews 3:15 clearly states, “Today if you hear his voice don’t harden your hearts! It is not me but the Holy Spirit that I pray reveals to you the truth of his precious gospel......John 3:16 says for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes on him will not perish but have everlasting life! V 17 says then V 18 says whoever believes on the son is not condemned but whoever does not believe on the son is condemned already because he has not believed on the son whom God has sent! Also Acts 16:30-31 what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house I am not threatening anyone but just warning them what will happen if they reject this precious gift of eternal life! Christ died a horrible criminals death! He was beaten brutally mocked spit upon and endured countless hours of torture pain for all of our sins! Ppl go to hell because they reject that pardon for their sins! And Jesus is saying to them in Matthew 25:41 depart from me you cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! Hell was only prepared for Satan and his angels! It is not God who threatens anyone it is the craziness of rejecting the free pardon of salvation! It’s like if you’re in court you’ve committed a crime say you murdered someone! Now if you say to that Judge hey I know I’ve done a terrible thing of murdering that person but I hear you’re a good judge and so I know you’ll be fair to me...... the judge is going to reply well yes you’re right about one thing I am a good judge and because I’m a good judge I’m going to see to it that you’re punished and that justice is served! Well then all of a sudden someone you don’t even know comes forward and says you know what I know he’s committed the crime he’s committed and he deserves to go to jail but I really don’t want to see him go to prison so I’ll just go to prison for him so he can go free! So if you accepted that offer you’d be free to leave the courtroom but if you didn’t well you’d be crazy and go to prison yourself! Well that’s exactly how it was 2,000 years ago! He is God in human flesh and he came to this earth lived a perfect sinless life and even though he knew that we had sinned and because of our sins deserved to die miserably but he said no I don’t want to see them suffer so I will go and take their punishment for them! Even though he did absolutely nothing wrong still he chose to take the punishment for our sins so we can be set free from the power bondages and consequences of our disobedience to God! Romans 5:8 says For God commends his love toward us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us! 1 John 2:2 says he was made to be the propitiation for our sins! And not just for our sins but the sins of the whole world! 2 Corinthians 5:21 He who knew no sin became Sin for us that we would be made his righteousness! The truth is if you had to get to Heaven by your own effort then you cannot do it! Because Romans 3:10 says there is not one that does good! No Not One! Romans 3:23 says For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God! Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death! But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord! But the good news is Romans 10:9 If we confess with our mouth and believes in our hearts that Christ died for our sins then was raised from the dead we will be saved! V 10 For it’s with the heart we believe and it’s with the mouth confession is made unto salvation! God gave us 10 commandments to follow and we’ve broken every one of them! And because God is a good God he cannot allow our disobedience to him to go unpunished! Well then like I just mentioned above his son Jesus stepped forward and said no I don’t want to see them punished so I will take their punishment for them! And also like I said he died a terrible substitute criminal’s death for us on a cross so now all we have to do is accept that payment for our sins and we can escape the terrible wrath of God that is to fall on them who do not accept this atonement that was sacrificed for our sins! Praise the lord Romans 10:13 says Whoever calls on the name of the lord shall be saved! And 1 Peter 1:4 you’re an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you! Christ clearly said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father but through me! Acts 4:12 clearly states that there is no other name given unto Heaven or earth by which we must be saved as there is salvation in no other! Jesus clearly states that there is clearly only one way to Salvation and it’s him that’s it! There is no other way! God Bless everyone who reads!

I miss hearing the congregation sing. The band is so loud! And the range of notes is meant for real singers not just commoners like me coming to praise the Lord. I sit near the front (it forces me to stay awake) and when I turn and look at the congregation, just a few people are participating. Most are just staring at the words on the screen. One time, due to a storm, the electricity was funky so we had to sing acapella. It was so beautiful that I just knew the band would incorporate that into future services but nope!

Oh, I miss Mark's stand up comedy. What he said about worship music, churches and hymns is so true. I was on the tech team at my church for 16 years and the last year or two our worship leader constantly repeated songs. It was like listening to K-Love's top 3 songs. 🙄 It got old fast. Modern worship songs aren't as good as the songs written 20 years ago. For the record, I'm 51, I grew up listening to Queen, Chicago, Zeppelin, Boston, Styx, etc, etc, I also listened to DC Talk, Petra, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, the Choir, etc, etc, etc (I still listen to all of them). I've often said, we need more Rich Mullins and less K-Love. Another issue I have is people who take the old hymns and add a random sounding verse to it to "rewrite" it. I have yet to hear one that works well. Just skip the random new verse and put your own musical style to it instead. I was at a Christmas eve service at my church, a year after I stepped down from tech, and during Silent Night (which they traditionally played as the last song), the worship leader threw this random verse into it that was upbeat and completely different, then went back to Silent Night for one verse. I looked around and I think the majority of people were so thrown from the mood that the worship team had before that, that they stopped singing the last Silent Night verse. I forgot where I heard it and who said it, but someone said the reason they play songs heard on the radio (i.e. K-Love) is because that's what people are listening to everyday. Or something along those lines. I moved last year and haven't started church shopping where I live. Part of me is in no rush because of everything I had experienced during my years on tech. The other part of me doesn't know what size church I want to go to. I left my previous church home and started going to another one right before the pandemic, I liked it. It reminded me a lot like the church I went to from ages 20-24 (the second church I went to) but I just never went back. I'm about 30 minutes away, not up for the commute there (it's not a bad commute) but I'm just in no rush.

The church I attended, before I moved, did something that blended both the old and new. There would be contemporary songs, but worship leader would bring a hymn that tied into the sermon. And before we would sing the hymn, the leader would bring kind of a "pre message" and share the history behind the song, and what the writer was going through during that time. Think... Horatio Spafford author of "It is well with my soul". People can relate to that. Plus, for several hymns, there are up tempo versions that relay the same message, just in a more modern sound. For example Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone.

Jesus spoke to me once in an audible voice while I was in my shop. I froze in shock, trying to figure out what He meant by what He said. Years later, we had a full on conversation, but that was the internal voice most definitely not my own, in silent prayer.

Jesus Was Born Incarnate Jesus was born incarnate to a young Jewish virgin, lived a sin free life, was illegally persecuted and then crucified on a cross on Calvary. He arose three days later defeating death and ascended into Heaven where He sits at the right hand of God.. “Jesus knew He was entering the world to be the final and ultimate sacrifice for sin. His body had been divinely prepared by God specifically for that purpose. Jesus was going to die for the sins of the world, and He knew it. Moreover, He was doing it willingly and joyfully . That was the whole point of His incarnate birth. Jesus came to earth, of course, to reveal God to mankind. He came to teach truth. He came to fulfill the Law. He came to offer His kingdom. He came to show us how to live. He came to reveal God’s love. He came to bring peace. He came to heal the sick. He came to minister to the needy. He was raised in a family who didn't believe in His divinity. He had six half-brothers and two or three half-sisters who didn't believe in His divinity until after His resurrection. What gets me is demons knew His divinity but men and women of His time didn't. Strange. I presume Mary and Joseph knew His divinity. But in Luke 2:49-50 [NKJV] “He said to them, [His earthly parents] “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Did they not understand Jesus' divinity? This makes me wonder. "But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matthew 6:33 NKJV) Luke 3:23 states that Jesus was "about 30 years of age" at the start of his ministry. Jesus preformed 14-15 miracles (they were called signs) in the three years or so of His ministry on earth. Many miracles were preformed by Jesus Christ but not specifically identified and recorded in God's word. Jesus' miracles were followed by Jesus forgiving the individuals of their sins and commanded they sin no more. Many of Jesus' miracles were not identified. No other religious leader forgave mankind of their sins. Our sins separate us from God, and there’s nothing we can do to make things right. So, we need someone to save us from our sins and make us acceptable to God. That someone is Jesus Christ. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for among men there is given no other Name under heaven, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 GNV) That’s why God sent Jesus to earth. Jesus’ death on the cross paid for every wrong we’ve ever committed or will do. Jesus made it possible for us to have a relationship with God the Father. I am a sinner from birth and need help, Jesus Christ is that help, my only hope. Therefore by the deeds of the law (Ten Commandments) no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law our sins are recognized not saved. I try to confess my sins and iniquities before Jesus Christ, at the foot of the cross daily. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19, to His disciples that: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” I will not have to stand before The Great White Throne of God, my sins have been cleansed by Jesus Christ's crucifixion on the cross. And I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ of all my sins and iniquities before-today, today and forever. I Love Jesus Christ despite the fact that I'm human and I fail Him daily; I pick up my cross daily and follow Him. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He was crucified on the cross where He died for my sins and inequities and that He rose again on the 3rd day to give me a way through salvation and sanctification. He loves me dearly and forgives my sins and inequities. His Word says that if I deny Him before men, He will deny me before His Father. Following, I believe are the greatest verses in God's Word. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 NKJV) I am a Christ-follower and live in the Kingdom of God on earth in Jesus Christ, my Lord, Savior and Leader. I have faith and trust in the grace and mercy of God for eternal life for my soul in Heaven when I pass from this life into paradise. I proclaim this openly to the world, that I am sinner, that I am sorry for my sins and iniquities and repent of my sins and iniquities and receive Jesus Christ by faith into my heart, mind and soul as my Lord, Savior and Leader. I openly confess Him as Lord from this moment on, I want to follow Him, I pledge to obey Him daily, and read His word. I will include those in my prayers who are lost and have chosen to deny God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ declared: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 NKJV) I am in the “Lamb's Book of Life” and will not face “The Great White Throne of God” which leads to Hell. The grace and glory be to God. God bless

I had to have a scan on my brain while having my head strapped down that lasted 28 minutes. The only way I made it was to come up with a music set that I knew would last half an hour and I laid there and mentally played every note of a praise & worship and altar-call set. I must have sped it up in my mind. When I finished, I had to rerun the chorus "Something About That Name" a couple of extra times because I had to fill an extra 90 seconds. Glad to hear someone else has used the same coping mechanism.

anyone who is anointed could have written it and a lot clearer: I wrote it in one page and Hashem revealed it in ONE NAME, HIS NAME: There is nothing to understanding the NEW TESTAMENT if you are anointed: If you are not, there is no way you could understand any of the Bible in the RIGHT WAY, no matter how many more books or words it would contain. ALL that happens to those who read it by the carnal mind (seed of the serpent, false prophet, is CONFUSION (Babylon):

God do speak audibly to us. He raised me from a deathbed and healed my disease. He told me to read James 5:15. I didn't even knew such a book existed back then. He still speak to His children and He heals and His word is truly Holy Spirit inspired.

I came out of Catholicism and got saved in a fundamentalist Baptist summer camp. I loved the hymns they sang. So meaningful and convicting and glorious. The Saviour is Waiting to Enter Your heart got to me. Jesus never let go of me. I’m an old Grandma now and I’ve been a missionary for 40 years in the far east…

Mark, you mentioned RU-vid.....is THAT the software you are using when you have yourself side-by-side with lyrics, or is it some other software or app? I lead music for a small church here in the Orlando area, mostly older folks, so we do a lot of great hymns, but I try and sneak in a new song or two every Sunday....ha! And I have written some songs too, that we use, including the "Fearless" songs that are totally Scripture only. (Pastor sings them during HIS MRI-s!) Thanks for your help.,,,,jon

Mark, Mark, Mark... As a Baptist myself, I have to tell you that you have to remember that it is not "dancing"... It's "foot fellowship"! [Edit] Kirk, the stated ministry of Keith and Kristen Getty is that of keeping hymn writing alive. Stuart Townend often joins them, as well.

I saved in December 23 1973. In a Baptist church. I went into nursing. I worked in nursing homes ,hospitals, assisted living, and with developmental challenged adults. I have been a Sunday school teacher since 1978. In my small community l have young people come to my house l am still teaching. My phone also is my way to minister to others. I ministered to 2 priests and a young minister. A couple weeks ago while researching the word.l ask a clarification of a scripture. You sent me text. He told me l had him working on all cylinders. What a awesome thing to know yo can get others seeking deeper into the word. We are the hands and feet for Christ. In psychology and in the medical field. Laughter is healing it is from God.

Interestingvabout the MRI. I get a lot of them because of health issues and research studies I'm in. They have Spotify set up with headphones. When they ask me what I want to listen to I always say Russ Taff. He's my MRI buddy. It's really nice to have that time of being still focused on praising God.

When I did youth ministry, I had a student ask me what a hymn was? So, I looked up the definition. The word "hymn" means worship music. So worship music changes over the years. But worship music to me should always be to Jesus.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot relate to or get the least bit filled with the spirit of the Lord with words and lyrics that don't rhyme! I realize we can't all go to a service with music from the Gaithers, Michael W. Smith, etc. Look around during the service. How many people are actually singing? How many are being filled and lifting up praises? How many are genuinely feeling like they're worshipping and not being entertained by the worship team? I get closer to God by staying home, or being out in nature and listening to old hymns sung with feeling than I do attending any church.

Mark, I get it. I'm an old baptist too, but church is also for older people. You can never know who is or is not saved or their age. We had a 98 year old saved at our small baptist church! Praise the Lord! He went home to the Lord at 100.

I questioned once why we didn’t sing hymns much and the answer I got was the kids don’t know the hymns. My answer was so teacher them. I’ll watch the kids singing Sunday morning while we sing the new songs and they are hardly singing but they sing more with hymns. But you can get chastised if you keep requesting to sing hymns. So sad.
