** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Mark sends Simon a puzzle to open on camera this evening... it's called 1919 Sandwiches and it's the most unbelievable construction from American Math Teacher, RockyRoer. Prepare to have your mind-blown!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. A digit in row 1 indicates which row contains the 1 in that column. Eg if r1c4 was a 6 then 1 would appear in r6c4. A digit in row 9 indicates which row contains the 9 in that column. A digit in column 1 indicates which column contains the 1 in that row. Eg if r7c1 was a 4 then 1 would appear in r7c4. A digit in column 9 indicates which column contains the 9 in that row. Clues outside the grid indicate the sum, or parity of the sum, of the digits sandwiched between the 1 and 9 in their rows/columns.

I really thought that by now, Simon would know better than to say that he thinks a puzzle is impossible before trying to solve it 😏

It reminded me of Phistomefel's Ancient Wall puzzle. Yet another masterpiece. My first two questions were instantly "Where can 1 go in b1?" and "Where can 9 go in b9?" Each of these has only 3 possible answers. For b1, 1 can only be in r1c1 if it is in either r1 or c1, because each part of the reference digits must contain a low, a medium, and a high. If it is in neither r1 nor c1, it must be referenced by a 2 and a 3. Likewise, you can restrict 9 to exactly r7c8, r8c7, or r9c9. There are further restrictions based on the 4 total in r1 leading to a 9 in r3c1 if r1c1 is a 1, but this means between r1c3 and r9c3, a 35 total would be even.

Paused the video at 5:19, tabbed over to my puzzle, made a whole deduction (beautiful, the one about row 1's 9 not being on an even or 13 clue) smiled big

52:00 Easier way to think about it is you couldn't have a 7 in R9C2 because then you'd have a 9 in R7C2. That would be consecutive with the 1 and the clue at the top says "odd".

As a software developer, I wholeheartedly approve of any and all indexing puzzles. This one was a dream to solve. absolutely brilliant. Simon could have solved this much faster if he’d used all the available indexing logic but it is tricky if you’re not used to it.

42:12 I can't imagine solving it, let alone that fast, had Mark not solved a puzzle with the indexing edge of the grid ruleset recently, and the sandwich clues made it a fun solve

47:36 (over 2 sessions) ... I spent far too long determining r9c8 (after a decent start); once I finally saw past that, I was able to finish without further difficulty. Nice puzzle!

I was screaming around 45:00. Those pencil mark 4s in column 7 interact with 9 and the odd sandwich clue. 9 cannot be in r2c7 because then we get a sandwich sum of 0, and it can’t be in r3 because then 4 would be in row 2 and that’s still even.

At the beginning I noticed Simon must have been really unhappy as when he was first trying out the puzzle, when explaining the BIG secret of suduko, he didn't say that he only says the secret to only his most favorite of people.

Mark did a puzzle a couple of weeks ago which had a similar break in with indexing in the rows and columns and the repeated digits in the corners in boxes 3 and 7.

I think that for some of these puzzles where you're approaching it blind, it might be even more entertaining if you read the rules before looking at the grid… the rules sound moderately sensible until you see how few clues there are

Just watching Simon dance all around the 9 can't be in column seven in box 3 because of the odd clue... so close so many times, yet ending up finding it in a completely different round about way is so amusing... even to the point of checking the 2 possibility for indexing but skipping checking the 7, so close and yet so far away

56:37 for me. A little disappointed Simon resorted to pencil marking. Once you realize there is one row and one column where the 1 and 9 are referencing each other, it is fairly straightforward to narrow those options down to Row 5&6 and Column 4&5, and then the 4 sandwich clue eliminates Column 4 as an option. That was my break-in. The parity clues were very useful as they could be applied to both the sandwich values and the 'outies'

I found the break-in much more easily by working solely on R1. We know the sandwich has to be 149, and we know more or less where it lives based on the value of R1C1 (sometimes there are two options for the order), and when we place the 149 we also can place 1s in the respective columns. It's fairly easy to see there is only one possible fill for R1C1 using the vertical sandwich clues.

58:42 The other way to get the 6 being if the sandwich filling is odd the digits outside the sandwich must be even, and since they're an 8 + 4 + two other digits picked from 367, and the only way to make that even is to lose the 6...
@bass2564

48:16 Highlights the key square for considering the sandwich clue in column 7, which would instantly place the 9 in box 3: "I don't think I'm a million miles away..." No, you're really not. :-)

51:00 the easier solution was staring at him for 10 minutes. By using the odd clue at the top of column 7, he would have realized 9 could never go in column 7 in box 3.
