You are a mind reader! Just today I put some jelly in a mini ceramic dish on side of birdbath in my lame effort to discourage ants with birdbath water, as saw Catbirds (donot have a jelly feeder but want one.) I have a tiny condo yard , no Bird feeders allowed, but they have not said anything about my hummingbird feeder( rarely get hummingbirds as tiny yard, just feet from busy highway & shopping centers ) Never knew all those birds like jelly know the Catbirds like, as all last summer a pair stayed. I placed jelly & blueberries in dish inside birdbath ( not ideal as when rains I have to bring in jelly or becomes a mess). I really need to get a Jelly feeder.
I live in Virginia. I wonder if a jelly orange feeder would work for me? I also wonder when to put it out? I just found this youtube channel and love it
My first oriole made an appearance at my feeder today! However, I am having a problem with raccoons treating my jelly and oranges as an overnight buffet. Any advice? Love this channel!
If you cannot put the feeder on a pole with a raccoon baffle, you can try hanging it from an eave in front of a window ((they can't climb glass). If that doesn't work, consider bringing them in at night. A customer told me she puts them in her gas grill at night instead of bringing them into the house.
Mark, I would like to make grape jelly for the birds. Are the grapes sweet enough without adding sugar? I found a recipe that is just grapes cooked down and pectin added. Thank you.
@@MarksBackyardBirds I offer natural grape jelly and orange halves. I put out two different types of nectar feeders. The orange Aspects saucer style and the Perky Pet Deluxe glass canopy style. They preferred the Perky Pet feeder but seemed to stop using it.
There are nectar guards that fit the OrioleFest feeder from Birds Choice that work well against bees but I have never found a solution for jelly. Unfortunately, if they get bad with jelly, your best solution is to take it in for a while. Put dried mealworms in its place.
That can be trouble for any small bird. It is a very rare occurrence but can happen. They should be washed off carefully and released if you are ever faced with this situation.
