So two parents cannot take care of their child, but they expect a company to take care of hundreds of millions of people accessing their platform. what can Meta do? To hire one person for each child who is allowed to be on the phone from the age of two? Parents would do anything not to blame themselves but social media, bands, games, etc
Agreed 100%! The parents chose to gave their children devices to begin with. Thousands of people post negative things every second. Its the responsibility of the parents to actively check on simple things like what they had liked or watched. 👍
Hey. It is not his fault. Why did you make this person to apologize? Then, make parents apologize for not controlling their kids, make those "psychologists" who convince kids that their parents cross "boundaries" when they want to check the phones of their kids; those who convince parents that they can traumatize their kids if they scold them for wrong decisions...cmon...do you think that only this company is countable for those broken hearts? Pedophilic LGBTQ...they are should be considered for spreading decisive info to parents and their kids using the globally available platforms like FB, Tiktok, Instagram and many more.

I despise Zuckerberg. But we're crucifying him for our own failings as parents. Social Media isn't a creature that jumps out of a tree on you while walking down the street. You have to go looking for it. Take the smartphones from the kids. A few people have survived their teenage years without them.
It's very mean to say it's the parent's responsibility. There is a team of engineers at Facebook researching how to steal everyone's attention. How can parents with they day-to-day life fight that? What they are doing is evil!
You totally miss the point. Child porn and underage online arrassment is illegal all over the world and Social media do absolutely nothing to stop this shit.
@RamonBalthazar We can make a parental decision to keep our kids off of social media. We can take away our kids' smartphones, set restrictions on our wifi, monitor their online activity, etc. Social media and how it is used is a choice and every parent can make a decision to set limits. Everyone is waiting for the government to take some kind of action when all we have to do is do it ourselves. Social media is not a necessity of life. Not for anyone, least of all children.
It is the parent's responsibility to regulate social media. Maybe not let social media raise your kids. Take away the cell phones iphones androids, ipads. Responsibility starts at home.

I can’t believe how Mark was able to stay calm during this. The politician just makes rhetorical questions over and over, trying to make a point, whilst being incredibly rude to Mark, interrupting all the time, not letting him talk at all. It was a good opportunity for dialogue, but there was no conversation there, just politicians being politicians.
True, it doesn't seem like a serious and mature to have someone address the other with such tone and disrespect. Impossible to get a word in by the other part.
@@simple.stuffs Yet Mark knew full well and allowed his platform to be corrupt, to spread harmful content be it nudity, violence or misinformation to support false narratives for the sake of Politics etc. It was pushed to influence and it became harmful. The Senator has a solid and valid point. Their jobs are to call out these Big Tech companies. Mark is not by any means innocent. To call them stupid, just shows you don't know what's going on.
It's like when someone hit by the car rather than blaming the driver it blames the car company for manufacturing it . If parents are failing to take responsibility of their kids how can they expect a company to compensate them.
Agreed! Another analogy can be accusing a gun manufacturer for killing people rather than accusing the shooter. (Edit: This Example is wrong, Since the sole purpose of guns is to kill people. Guns are more like the Dark web I realized or the P*rn Platforms, You don't go there to expect good happening to you. But you drive to commute peaceful and safely as is social media to connect peacefully and safely). Thanks to Thomas in the replies for correcting me.
Also I don’t believe that the “drivers” or the “shooter” in the analogies are the parents. I think the actual harasser are the ones. There is nuance to everything. I agree with senate that on the very particular point that Parents are not that Tech-savvy and may not be able to provide the right attention to the children and the entire responsibility shouldn’t be on them. But then Senate puts the entire responsibilities on the Companies, which is also wrong. A Problem is never solved if you put the blame on one entity, and better, you shouldn’t waste on blaming one and other. All three parties, The Companies, Parents, & the government have to put in their part to stop the forth party that is the harasser and offenders. You may sue the companies for not doing their part but once they come in front of you, you should not do hearings just with the sole motive of shaming the companies and domonizing them, which felt like this senate was doing for their own political gains. There has to be understanding between the parties. It felt like these senators don’t know anything about technology and its limitations. All parties should know what are the limitations and abilities of each other one in the matter. Companies should know the limitations of parents, and government. Government should know the limitations of companies and technology. Problems are solved this way. I’m sorry but this sent hearing didn’t feel like they were trying to get to a solution but rather just felt like public shaming of companies.

These hearings are actually a joke. The senators won't even let Zuckerberg respond and they know that many of the issues with Facebook and their technology cannot be simply solved through simple means. The "Yes and No" question was actually also a joke. Zuckerberg doesn't just have multiple billions of dollars in cash just lying around to give to people. Most of his net worth is in businesses and although what happened to the victims was a tragic event, it doesn't make sense for one person to compensate for everything that happened (as the senator implied he should use his OWN money). The responsibility to check to dangers lies with the parents and of course Facebook has responsibilities as well to create tools that help eliminate these dangers. Teens should be educated by their parents (maybe this can be implemented into Facebook's app) to know what dangers lie especially when dealing with unknown people on the internet, and how to deal with them (not adding people they don't know, etc.). It is extremely difficult to create a 100% perfect gate against bad people on the internet, and so teens and children alike should understand the risks associated with social media and how to deal with it. It's almost comical that Facebook is being sued for "hooking teens." That's what social media is for and again, it's up to the parents to regulate the time kids spend on things like TV, Games, and Social Media.
You laid this out succinctly! Well done! I always say, nothing can be explained in binary terms but a lot of people like yes and no for simplicity sake. The problem is, there are nuanced answers to everything. I feel sorry how much Zuckerberg was grilled without letting much word in.
They won’t let him respond because the second he starts to, he throws up a bunch of Marketing words that are irrelevant to the question. That’s a court not an advertising channel.
I agree with you, Facebook is useful tools for advertisement and recognizable gain to people. It's just some other people are smarter to abuse system and finding loopholes for their own abuse sake. Even if Facebook is shut down, people will always find their own self sabotage through something else, maybe tv or media. Maybe they could create another social media application that has same function as Facebook. So it's useless to shut down Facebook.
But what about the parents? Blame Ford for all accidents in the US! This doesn’t even make sense, no one is force to download this platforms everyone is responsible in their use
Parents, government and corporates have started to avoid accountability. Someone apologizing is not going to realive your dead child, country or business. Be reponsible and take decisions under moral and legal grounds.
