Try a quick and dirty resurrection on the 283. Pull the heads, check out the pistons and cylinder walls. Quick dingle ball hone and some rings if warranted. Cheap timing set if other one is trash. Lap the valves and go. You always have the LS as backup.

Dan, I'm an old fellow, and I'm saying just relax, it's your money, your time, and when it's done it's your 57. Just take a piece of paper and write down the benefits of doing the 283 and if the 5.3 is a solid choice, in each case take a clear look at the cost of each including driveline expense and availability of parts, and what you'll end up with it will help reduce the stress of spending your money. You'll sleep better and be happier in the long wrong.

Dude Dan, YOU are being that cool old school mechanic! You are taking what you have and are making everything better. In the OLD DAYS you would take what you got, clean it and make it better, than assembling to cruise. There was no buying all kinds of new stuff and trashing everything or to throw away everything just because it's old. You cruised and fixed what you had without breaking the bank. It's what made hot rodding fun for the poor or those who have less. Thanks for the video Dan & Dani.

Carbed LS... 283 with a basic rebuild. Honestly.. they sound good. I think the soul of the 283 would fit the 57 better. If it is too tired, then it is too tired and you can carb the LS.

Soak the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil for a week or so then get it running with high octane fuel. Give it a few heat cycles and the rings and valves should come around. It will run again without disassembling it. Brent at Halfass does it all the time. 60% of the time, it works every time 👌

Tough decision with the LS sitting there waiting to be used but I'm going to be selfish and say I'd like to see you do a garage rebuild on the 283. If it's going to take too much once you crack it open, you have the LS on waiting in the wings and can rebuild the 283 later or save for the next project.

Personally I like the idea of having the 283 in it, that being said, I have a 283, and power pack heads that have had some work done, and Im putting a 5.3 in my 64 c/10. Dan that 283 was so close to running. You have to try this. Re oil the cylinders, carburettor clean or petrol and 24 volts not 12 also work the throttle... hold it open. Get Dani out to press the starter and you do the rest. Make sure you only apply 12 volts to the ignition though. That thing will run. When you get it running the other cylinders with low compression will come good if they have stuck rings.

A '57 Chevy Bel Air 2 door hardtop is gorgeous in any color, except black. You just convinced me to order a case of incandescent light bulbs. I love that warm glow. I was 16 in 1975. I had a '63 Nova SS that I put a 283 in. Way back in the early '80s I had a Mopar 318 destroy itself when all the teeth sheared off the cam sprocket. A small block Chevy, and pretty much any other car engine needs at least 100 psi to run, and 150+ to run well. It seems strange that it turns over so slowly with such low compression. I suspect there is something very tight in there somewhere. With compression that low, it should be spinning over really fast. Yes it costs a lot to completely rebuild an old school small block Chevy. But I love them. They are from my time. That's one reason I start with cars that don't need so much other work. I'm in Arizona, and you can get a rust free car/truck here for not that much that needs a bunch of mechanical work, but is otherwise solid. No it won't be a tri five Chevy. One of those in really good condition almost anywhere. I got my rust free 1964 Fairlane 2 door that didn't need any body work for $950. That was for basically for a roller. But it left me money to build a nice 390 for it. I don't really have to much of a problem with an LS, as long as it's carbureted. I won't touch anything that's not carbureted.

My first hot rod 55' chevy that I had in high school came with a 283. My first engine rebuild. We swapped in 12-1/2 to 1 pop up pistons. A big bump-stik, solid lifter and a tunnel ram. For the late 70s it was a runner. Car eventually got a 468 big block and a muncie M-22 (yeah I saw Two Lane Blacktop as well) we also used a steel barrel ends to make the inner wheel wells larger and we lowered the car and it still has Mickey Thompson "Indy Profile" N-50, 15's under the car and they did not rub. Miss that car a bunch. Root Beer brown and last I heard it was maybe in Northern California.

I've been enjoying watching your process of thinking things through with us viewers. To me what you have available in your time frame makes the most sense. Everyone will enjoy what ever you do. but once you open up the 283 and know the rings are shot, probably bearings and collapsed piston skirts. Those costs add up really fast. Old timer once told me set a budget and use that as your ruler. Helps the keep the build on track. either way enjoy watching you work on your projects.

Please use the 1958 and later style side mounts on the engine, as they have many benefits. You might want to double-check your info about the single triangle mark on the heads. When built properly, Aluminum PowerGlide transmissions can be very tough, but yours may have the smaller, weaker planetary, as the engine is only a 283. This build is bringing back some great memories!!! Very enjoyable!!!

Iv been waiting to see you do a carbed LS conversion for a while, and I think that is 100% the best way to go in this situation. Dumping the efi stuff for a carb setup could very potentially give that LS engine a soul. If anything, at the least it should liven it up. Later on Id like to see a postmortem on the 283 and a look at what it would take to resurrect it on the cheap, it can always find its way into a future project.

Definitely LS.. As you've pretty much touched every part of the car it'd be awesome to see it finished with a loud reliable motor and maybe a paint job or a wrap with the DD's logo premoting what you guys are about. Definitely my new favourite channel. Cheers from Australia 👍

What's on store for today, Dan ? What will the internet viewers surprise be. Will you be working on a heavy Chevy , 55 .56 ,57, you know, I think it would be cool to add a 1958 Chevy to your collection.

Dan, the combination I told you will make the ole' 57 pretty fast and sounds great! Don't take the engine over 6,000 rpm or it will pull the pressure in studs out of the head and do damage. I tapped mine and put screwin studs in my heads. Starter tap than finished them with a bottom tap to make sure the were straight...

Maybe tear down the 283 , and at least see what it needs. Pick away at giving it a reasonable rebuild, and whether you use it now, or down the road, it'll be rebuilt before you know it, and you'll have a nice classic cruising engine ready to go. Another fun video.

A garage rebuild of the Small Block is the way to go---even if it stretches the budget a bit. Those little 283s are rippers.

DD's Speedshop Stunned again. I would say that thing was so wore out that it wouldn't start anymore that's why it's not in a car

Down and dirty rebuild fits that ride, do as suggested below with disassembly of engine, hone it, new rings if needed, lap valves , timing set and new gaskets you likely have a runner.

I would rebuild the 283 ..if it didn’t need bored too much ! I am just one of those old school small block people! I think they are much less complex than the LS lovers ! It’s your choice to decide !

You've got the answer. Put the LS engine in the '57.

It would be cool to have the old school SB in it. I built many of them in my day. The way I drove my cars they always needed engine work. As far as cost make the car run as you want it to. Thats called Hot Roding. Your building it to suit you.

Great video ! that poor old 283 is tired,i would do the lS for now and do a quick rebuild later on the 283, they had weak timing chains and gears that i remember ,of course the the rings are toast.prices have really soared over the years, love your videos ! keep em coming...

When I start an old engine a lot of times I will put two stroke gas in the carburetor , that way you will get oil on the Rings right away along with the cylinder walls, much better than a dry start

Those are 4 barell heads, power pack heads had double hump heads and they cam on 327's... They are the best stock heads to put on a 283... 1.94" intake and 1.5" exhaust and can put 2.02" intake and 1.6"exhaust valves on it for more power, combustion chamber is small, around 60cc's stock, good combustion chamber for power, 327-350 hydraulic cam works well with that combination. Use a 4 field starter for it because it will crank it over easy if has more compression. A stock castiron AFB intake works very good for the 283 Dan! There is some old Holley intakes that work well with it also that came out on 327's...
