The Marksmanship Medal is awarded for qualifying as an expert marksman with the Beretta M9, or M 16 rifle. To qualify at the expert level a superior score must be obtained on an approved weapons qualification course. This video looks at the Navy sharpshooter badge going back to 1910 and the expert rifleman medal of 1941, Plus the expert pistol shot medal of 1955. In addition to the Navy expert rifleman medal and navy expert pistol shot medal there is a silver E device for the ribbon and a bronze S device for qualification as a sharpshooter

Can you make one talking about the history of the navy Distinguished Rifle and Distinguished Pistol ribbons and medals?

My father, an Air Force Master sergeant, served at a joint duty posting on a navy base and while there was able to qualify for the Navy pistol award to go along with his Air Force one. He said he used to get some confused looks as fellow airmen were looking at his ribbon rack and trying to figure out what that “strange” last “foreign” ribbon was.

kind of cool when you think about it. the United States, Air Force is the only service that has no restrictions on wearing ribbon earned from the US military services.

According to my grandfathers file it says he qualified marksman but doesn’t say with what. He has been deceased for 20 years. Would he have both ribbons?
