this is my favourite scene in the entire film, Marla has always been knocked for her looks, even though she's always been so pretty. and finally someone sees her as she really is, and falls in love with her. to find out she had a long and happy married life with a man who adored her from the first moment is heartwarming
A hilarious trainwreck, but this has to be one of the cutest scenes ever for a love-at-first-sight story! I think it's awesome that decades later, they're still together and as in love as when they first met.
He probably knew it would be a perfect fit for her. He loved her and was worried about her and what would happen when he was gone. That’s why he was so encouraging to her at the train station no matter how much she “what if’s”. Therefore, I think all of these answers are correct.
@@leviathancerberus9938: That is SO sweet. And then finding out they got married and stayed married ALL those years makes it even sweeter! (Eyeball washing from this [and many other scenes].)
I saw this as a kid, and i always loved how expressive and pretty she was in this scene cause she was a quiet Tom boy for most of the movie and ppl made fun of her looks. But she shined right here and she got her man!
Marla was an amazing character in the movie. This scene was funny and touching in a lot of ways. Sort of the ugly duckling finding her swan moment. I loved at the end of the movie when they reunited and she was unrecognizable. And the scene in the beginning with her dad was priceless.
Great scene. She shined and found love that she would not have found at home. Her dad was gold sending her off into a bigger world with the ladies. It's just a shame that the Peaches lost their best hitter. But Life trounces sports :).
Her father did tell her to go where things happen. And Rockford's loss was Racine's gain. By that time, Kit Keller was also part of the Racine Belles. Both ex-Peaches turned Belles were together again, as teammates.
I think I screamed out laughing when I saw her singing on the stage. Totally shocked and wonderfully surprised to see her come out of her shell and sing with gusto and heart to her new boyfriend. Red dress, new hairdo and new confident attitude had me cheering for her!
@@craigsimpson1230 She's making faces all though out the film. When she smiles she's actually quite pretty Example - black and white photo near end of film.
Marla and the poor chaperone in this movie were both treated like they were ugly even though they weren't. But it was all a part of the plot and comedy.
There are scene stealers, and there are scene AMBUSHES. Don't blame the guy, I'm in love with Marla! this and the finishing school scenes are legit laugh-out-loud no matter how many times you see it. (and realized what an early influence this character was on me, my comedy, esp my comedy characters who are often misfits/ mock conventional women's sexuality expectations etc).
the famous song is: 'IT HAD TO BE YOU'...... a classic. i still love this movie!! saw it in the theater, we howled with laughter 😂😂 Marla & Nelson FELLHARD for each other. love.
I remember this scene watching this Film as a young Teen and it's been stuck in My head ever since. I finally came back to it to finally figure out the name of the Song She sang.
Penny Marshall did a great job directing this film. Tom Hanks is great as always but just watching women be genuinely funny in scenes like this without feeling like it's a cheap setup. Such a great film.
I don't have a problem with that as much as I have a problem with Mae laughing at her. Mae is a mean girl (that's as nice as I am getting about her). Glad Marla had a happy life with Nelson!
haha when she says the end part and the sax player cries haha!! laughed my head off. my 7 year old daughter and my 11 yr old son...when she said the last part we all caught on to that and we died laughing.... can make me me blue haha. title should be changed to. it had to be you.
She's not gorgeous, but she's nowhere near as bad as she was in her tryout. I tried to figure out what they did to make her look so bad in the tryout. I always think of the line in the charm school. "What do you suggest?" "A lot of night games".
She was raised by her Dad. He had NO idea what to do to make her a girly girl. He did what he could. She was a good person and phenomenal baseball player. The ladies made her feminine looking and she ran with it.
