I just use a four inch nail punch. And it even has the crisscrossed pattern on it for flattening melted ends on the paracord.

@@theoffical_kingdavid8393 it works good for me tightening knots and the crisscrossed pattern does a good job when I flatten my melted paracord ends. Plus I only paid 4 bucks for it.

I like the ball on the end of those... I find that when I am using a lacing needle to do the job a fid should be doing, it can cause a little bit of pain in the palm or padding of the thumb joint from pressing down on the end of the fid.... I ended up making a small Diamond knot and fastened it to the end of the lacing needle... reminds me of an eraser that you put on the tops of pencils...

We use electrical tape for everything on a fishing boat. Wrap all your lines before you cut them to prevent freys and make melted ends cleaner.

The swedish fid is better for line splicing, but a tube fid works better for some splicing anyway.

"Fid" isn't necessarily incorrect. Specifically, that tool appears to be a "tube fid" or "tubular fid". It looks slightly shorter and with a shallower hollow than what I've used, but it otherwise appears to be the same thing. The term fid is commonly used in splicing and rigging books, and by rope manufacturers to describe that tool. In fact, dimensions used when splicing will often be measured in "fid lengths". They are particularly useful when splicing single or double braid rope, while Swedish fids - and the similar "Point Hudson" fid - are more useful for 3 strand and wire rope. I've actually never heard the term "lacing needle" used to describe that tool prior to this video (the lacing needles I've seen are all colourful plastic things). I'm guessing the difference in terminology is based on use case or perhaps geographic region? Or maybe it's just a difference between nautical parlance and that of landlubbers ;)

Does ANYONE know how much these actually cost? Even after going to the Facebook "group", trolling through the comments, etc, it still seems all deals are solely through PM? And maybe are just entirely unavailable, depending on the crafter's queue? I know Tim was given these for review, but price (or possibility of purchase) is relevant for everyone else. At this point, the video feels sorta like "Tim's favorite place in his house for weaving!"; interesting enough to watch, but sort of irrelevant for everyone but Tim. :)

@@Pirate715 Terrific. Thanks for the general price-point. I definitely don't begrudge anyone their fancy tools. (This one looks awesome.) It just seemed silly to "review" an item without even mentioning the price within an order of magnitude.

I though a lacing needle was a fid too just cause you called it that in all your videos using it.
@TheWeaversofEternity

Yeah I was wrong about that. After thinking about it, I think I called it a fid because when I first bought a set they were labeled as fids on the site I bought them from.
