Maro Itoje is a rugby union player, currently playing for Saracens and the England national team. Having joined Saracens at 16 years old, Maro shares how the kindness, manners and dedication of the senior players has shaped him. He discusses how his parents never pushed him to focus on rugby, so all of his motivation was internal.
Maro claims to not be the most talented player, rather his skillset is based on output and how hard he can work. This allowed him to take ownership of his commitments and efforts. Maro shares how rugby will never be his “true identity”, as it’s crucial for him to have varied interests and hobbies outside of rugby. He is currently studying for his Master of Business Administration at University of Warwick.
In this episode they discuss authenticity, what it means to be a cultural architect and the role trash talk plays in his life.

He's outplayed or matched Etzebeth plenty of times imo. For Saracens, England and the lions. Etzebeth has outplayed him a couple of times too but there's not much between them. Etzebeth a better carrier, Itoje gets a lot more turnovers and is more disruptive. I'm Irish btw

Very articulate, intelligent, with absolute respect for his culture. One of the best second rows in world rugby. However he is human and as such is entitled to have off days.I do not see him at his best right now. I don't know why. He does not look as switched on as usual. Looks tired at times when we all know he has a huge engine. I can't wait to see him back at his elite best. I wonder if Borthwick would trade him for an Etzebeth or a Whitelock right now. I'm sure we all want to see him back at his very best.

Itoje explains the difference between Nigeria and South Africans. Kholisi grew up playing the game. His family played the game in the townships of the Eastern Cape. Itoje learned at school.

South Africans live and breath it that's why England will always struggle, that coupled with a weak mindset.

And that mentality is exactly why England will always be the nearly men. Do you think the likes of Eben Etzebeth, would even consider saying, "rugby will never be my entire identity"?

You must be surrounded by incredibly boring (and probably non-existent) people if their entire identities revolve around one thing. Also - pretty sure Eben moved from Toulon to Sharks for 'personal reasons' other than just rugby. So yes, he might say something like that Stop hating - its making you say silly things

Am pretty sure that Etzebeth would probably agree with him. Most elite rugby players view rugby as their job and ofcourse take it seriously. Catch most of these elite players away from the game and most don't watch rugby games and prefer to watch soccer or something else on their down time or when they out. Having an elite sportsmanship altitude has nothing to do with placing rugby as their main and only identity.
