He was a cadet and I’m a student in grad school. We were in a long-distance relationship then. It was after his graduation that we first saw each other. He’s from QC and I’m from Bicol. Since there are no flights yet because of the pandemic, he had to drive 1114 km (8-10hrs) just to see me. I felt like I was the luckiest girl in the world. He stayed here for a week and I was the happiest woman at that time. He went the extra mile to show his love for me and I was so grateful for that. Everything was smooth sailing. When he needed to go back to report for work, he cried very hard before he had to leave. He even talked to my mom to take care of me while we will be away from each other again. He told me to wait for him, to be strong for us, and never let the distance break us. I promised him that I would wait for him no matter how long it takes. It took me 22 yrs to meet him, how long is 18 months before I can see him again? Things begin to turn sour when he went to the training camp. He would fight with me over petty things then use it as his way to get out of the relationship. At first, I didn’t consent to it because I was thinking that the issues weren’t valid enough for us to break. I thought the distance was just pressuring us. But I was wrong. We were on and off. In one of our fights, he sent me this song when he wanted to break up with me. Not until the day came when we finally broke up. Since then, not a day has passed without me listening to this song. And that’s when I comprehended it all. ”I count the ways I let you down. All my fingers and toes but I’m running out.” I must agree, he caused me too much pain already. I understand that he has no other choice but to leave and I respected it. At any rate, I don’t have any right to hold him back. ”And I remember your eyes were so bright When I first I met you, so in love that night And now I'm kissing your tears goodnight And I can't take it, you're even perfect when you cry”. I see it all now. He can no longer stand hurting me, his conscience was killing him. Little did I know, he wanted to bid goodbye because another girl has his heart now. He just couldn’t say it frankly to me it reached the point where I had to catch him and confirm from him that indeed there is another woman. It was a beautiful goodbye for him because he can finally be with her without feeling a single amount of guilt. But to me, it was the kind of goodbye that hurt too much I had to cry myself to sleep wondering where I went wrong. It’s been two months since we broke up but it still hurts the same. Pretty soon enough, I’ll also find the good to this goodbye.
