oh man this song gives me the creeps. “i love you and i hate you and i’m losing my mind/ and you tell me all the time that this’ll pass and that i’m gonna be fine” is literally a sentiment i’ve heard from tons of women at the domestic violence hotline where i work. the fact both her and titanic thought the lyrics in the song weren’t a red flag shows how desensitized they both were to the abuse. i can’t imagine what she endured.

This song is the "Lolita" of Pop Songs. It is catchy, gorgeous, and it sounds super happy. In reality, it's about abuse, toxic relationships, and ignoring any impulse to seek out professional help.
i volunteer at a domestic abuse hotline and a lot of the lyrics in the song are spookily familiar. her loving and hating him simultaneously, him dismissing her feelings as irrational, her friends disapproving of him, the framing of him as the only person who can make her feel love, the borderline obsessive “love” she describes... some of these things can be fine on their own but put them together and you get textbook signs of abuse.
@@Lucy-fn9rj Yeah, the love-hate thing is definitely present. I assume this was written when they were still together. It's even more disturbing if he was telling the truth when he said that he wrote her songs. Because then it means he loves and hates her at the same time, which the case with many abusers. One minute they hate you and are aggressive, the next minute they love you and are apologetic.

I hate that I know exactly the feeling this song is trying to convey. It's right near the end of the relationship, and you know you're about to figure out what the rest of your life is going to be like without this person. This person that controls everything about you, who you've convinced yourself you need.

I know I’m in this situation but he loves me and he takes care of me I don’t know what I’d do if I wasn’t with him. He watches over my social media and who I talk to, he questions every thing I do, he won’t let me do things that I love like streaming. Our families also like each other and I can’t break it off sorry for dropping this it’s just been stressful

Brittany Diane he is an abuser. He basically used her and threw her out like trash after she was tired of him, and replaced her with poppy. It’s sad because she really liked him and he was willing to give her away for money. He stole her music, to. She made the song “runaway” and then disappeared for a while. She bought him to court and won though, now she’s back and hopefully she’s gonna make more music. And she got her other music back as well.

@@username9885 I don't see how this song is a cry for help because it's about how she NEEDS him and without him she's lost and can't go on. I know Mars wrote her music but I think Titanic wrote this one specifically. I mean the whole song IS about how he's her savior and that she needs him to "keep her in line". On top of that Titanic was a fan of weezer, while Mars wasn't, and there's a clear reference in this song. This song definitely isn't a cry for help, maybe other songs were, but not this one.

I used to love this song when I was in a toxic relationship myself. I understand every word she says here because that is exactly how I felt. This was a song about being manipulated by a boy, but she tries to justify her staying in the relationship by saying that she is actually using him too. But that is just her trying to get some control of the situation, so that she can tell herself that she is fine but inside she knows what this toxic relationship is doing to her. I am so glad she is free from Titanic now, and I had the courage to leave my abuser too. In the end, that's what matters.

I don’t think it’s over yet. He has been so obsessed with her for years and now he can’t talk about her indirectly or directly due to the lawsuit settlement. I think he’ll slip up eventually, and even if he doesn’t it allows her the opportunity to come back to the platform and feel a little more safe than before and gain ownership of the accounts in her name.

listening to this after learning the awful things she was put through by him gives it such a sinister vibe. i remember being manipulated by my abuser and these lyrics really hit with the feelings that were evoked in me while i was being manipulated terribly. so glad she got away from him, i hope she's doing better and that poppy gets away from him.
