John Marshall High School in Los Angeles is classic in architecture and was the filming location for a number of movies, including "Grease," "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Zapped." Jeff & Sarah check out the 1931 campus and tell you a bit about its famous alumni and a bit about Grease itself. They'll go where Olivia Newton John & John Travolta and other stars like Johnny Depp acted out their roles in well-known movies.

Marshall High School is my alma mater! I attended summer school the summer that Grease was filmed here. Imagine how exciting it was to think that my school had a gigantic 1950's carnival right at school. They filmed it for two months and we heard, "We Go Together" for hours every day.

Best times ever ... it was an honor to be a student here for three years .... we had such school spirit ... still friends with many of my classmates over forty yrs later... I watch Grease being filmed... I was 15 yrs old and it was filmed in the summer .. love it.

I remember this film so well as a kid or teen I should say my family own a custom hot rod shop and my dad knew the theater owner and I got in the first day I watched this movie over and over I was so in love with Olivia Newton John bet I watched the movie over 100 times

I attended JMHS from 77-80. I remember driving by the school and seeing the film trucks parked on the street. The large M on the gym was covered by a banner. I think it may have said Rydell H.S. I worked my first paying job at a nearby PBS station (KCET CH28) after school. I played on the football team when the football field was real grass. I believe I am fortunate to have attended such a historical high school with such a rich filming history!!!

Well that's a pleasant surprise to see you do an episode on Marshall High. I graduated in '61 and there sure is a lot of changes to the school since then. I think I prefer the old Marshall to the newer one. Real grass on the field then and was well cared for then. I am glad that enough people had sense to save the main building as it is a beautiful structure. I always appreciate your videos not only for the film but for the information you have researched.

Class of 1987, some of the best times of my life, amazing School, amazing experience for 3 years. Grew up in Atwater (Now called Atwater Village) for 17 years and loved it there, magical memories. Silverlake, Loz Feliz, Griffith Park, Atwater, Hollywood, Glassell Park, Highland Park, Eagle Rock. It was so awesome growing up in Los Angeles during those times. I was there when they filmed the Van Halen Video "Hot for Teacher" and a few others. Lots of TV Shows filmed there as well. :-)

I grew up in Elysian Valley near Griffith Park. I graduated in 1971 from Marshall High. Glad we had our graduation on the football field even though we had an earthquake that year & we had suffered structural damage on the brick portion. Glad they preserved the facade of the building.

Another enjoyable trip down memory lane, thanks Jeff & Sarah. My only complaint is that it is too short! lol I'm surprised that you haven't done anything on American Graffiti, since it's right where you live. Having grown up in Modesto myself, I'm very familiar w/those locations. I even worked at Web's drive-in in downtown area back in the 70s, when I was only 15..and still hoping to see some more on the Farmington area and filming out there, I saw the original LIttle House on the Prarie cabin out not the Orr bros ranch

Actually, Cindy, even though "American Graffiti" is *set* in Modesto, it was actually filmed around the Bay Area...one night in San Rafael before they were asked to leave, the rest was filmed in and around Petaluma, the exception being the radio studio scene with Wolfman Jack and Richard Dreyfuss. That was filmed at the studio of KRE on Ashby Ave. in Berkeley.

Another Marshall Alumni here. Class of 1971 when big earthquake hit in LA. I remember attending school in the bungalows afterwards. Glad we still held our graduation on the football field that year. I was even there outside the fence looking at the empty carnival scene by chance the year Grease was filmed with my husband that day. Thanks for the memories and great video. 🙏🏻👍🎬🎥

In '71, I was a senior at TSK. I was in my pajamas and the EQ knocked me down to the floor. I would be in two more major EQs in L.A. and missed the SF EQ just by a few days. Not a matter of if, it is matter of when.

There was no mention in this history of John Marshall HS of the fact that the west campus was formally an army base. Argument with one of my school mates was that the west campus was an antiaircraft base during WWII, while I thought it housed only an antiaircraft searchlight. I studied drafting in one of the temporary buildings, which, I am sure was a barracks for the troops during the war. Kobey Horn W'57

Exterior shots for Grease were also filmed at Venice High School (as well as for Grease 2). There is a story that Robert Wise, director of The Sound of Music and many other films, was invited to watch a run-through of the big song-and-dance number, You're the One that I Want, on the Marshall athletic field. Asked afterwards what he thought, he responded "Very energetic." Not sure is this is a case of damning with faint praise, so interpret that comment as you will. FWIW, my wife attended Marshall, two years ahead of DiCaprio, whom she describes as being something of an annoying twerp at the time.

Beautiful old school. That is when they really took care in building schools. It looks like a University. Probably built with FDRs new deal public works. Lots of movies and TV filmed there. Great ! Thank You guys.

Actually built in 1931 before FDR was elected president. It really is a grand school. I think they redid the concrete at the top. I can’t imagine concrete weathering that well for that period of time.

@@jbenziggy Yep you are right. Still they must have spent a large amount of money to build it. Especially during the early years of the Great Depression. I don’t think the depression was very hard on Southern California. Lots of important industries here. Oil, dairy, citrus, automobiles, ships, movies, aircraft, the ports, and a few other things. A lot of the old schools here are large. Pools, gyms, football fields

Great video! I wasn't born untill '77 but I remember seeing the movie when I was younger. It's really interesting to see all of the other movies that used the school as well. My mom was born in Hollywood and grew up in the area. She went to the same dance school as Annette Funicello. Also, her and my two aunts have a picture with The Three Stooges.

On a side note Grease 2 was filmed at Excelsior High School (Norwalk, California)and a couple of other films also.

Great info ...... I to was in high school at that time.......remember all the grease hype, when it it hit the big screen ....... I read a article that the production cost in filming grease was a bargain price in 1977 ......today’s cost in making a grease type movie would be insane when you find a penny always check the year...... if it’s a 1943 copper ......you are a millionaire........very few 1943 (copper) pennies are copper most were (steel) because of war scarce metal. ....thanks for sharing
