I hope this video helps some people to get an idea about the tonal differences between these two Marshall Heads. They are quiet different. I don´t prefer one over the other...i love them both for what they do and its worth to own both!
No pedals used in this demo...no post processing.
I used a Gibson Les Paul Tribute with 498T and 490R Pickups
and recorded these Amps to my Daw with the Two Notes Reload. I used one of my own Marshall 1960AV impulses
What you don´t hear..the JVM410 has built in Reverbs per channel..i turned them off. The HJS has no built in Reverbs but instead built in Noisegates per channel that work really well. I turned these off too!

This is the first video I see with the true and real sound of the normal jvm, it sounds just like mine. all the other videos sound nothing close to reality, they sound like if they had some kind of pedal or effect going on... and that was driving me crazy and really frustrated. So, thank you very much indeed, I really appreciate taking the time to make this video. Thanks again.

Great comparison! Wish this had been out when I had to choose between the 2. I ended up happy with my choice and this video reinforced it but this video would have saved some hand wringing and internet scouring. Thanks for making it!

I preferred the original JVM in this demo. It's a little tighter, especially when subjected to higher levels of gain. The JS' sound is a little more "open", which is not a bad thing at all, but for metal stuff, it needs to be tighter.. That said, (and I am actually looking for a JVM) if I found a JS version for a good price, I'd nab it without thinking twice about it.

@-EndlessNameless- 3 года назад
I agree. Ive had the original for 2 years and managed to get my hands on the JS version a few weeks a go. everyone claims the JS is better, but I say it all depends on what you are going for. The crunch channel is way better on the JS, but I prefer the OD channels on the original JVM. Personally, my ideal JVM would be the clean and crunch channel from the JS and the OD channels from the original JVM....and the JS noise gates instead of reverb.

@@-EndlessNameless- yeah, i got the same feeling about these amps. I own the original 410H and find the crunch channel to be too compressed. but love the tighter OD1 and OD2
@cornfilledscreamer614

Of course, everything is subjective, but the 410H sounds better in this one - at least to me. Has more presence. I got a 410H a couple of months ago, and wasn't happy with it. Too "high-middie" & harsh. Went from a Boogie 4x12 (2 EV's and 2 Celestions) to a 1960 cab with Greenbacks. That helped, but still wasn't very happy. I was about to sell it, when one day I hooked in a $30 Behringer 7 band EQ just for poop & giggles. I completely took out 1.8Khz, and holy s___t! THAT is the answer! Also give it a little boost at 800, and it made a complete night and day difference in this amp. I was going to get all the mods, etc., but now there's absolutely no need in that. Harshness gone, and smooth as a baby's butt now. PUT AN EQ IN THE LOOP, PEOPLE! It's really just that simple!

@@musiccer7446 Try it out. It will help. I've got to be honest with you, though. I had my 410 crap out on two gigs this year. After the second time, I went out and bought a Peavey Invective, and I honestly can't describe how much it blows the 410 away - certainly sound-wise. Hope you have better luck with yours than I did mine!

@@cornfilledscreamer614 in versatility too? I am not a real metal person. I don’t care much if the high gain sounds are better on the peavy.
@cornfilledscreamer614
@cornfilledscreamer614 2 года назад
@@musiccer7446 I'm pretty much in the boat with you. Don't play metal, but when I take leads, I want a pretty distorted, fat tone. The clean channel is spot on. Every bit as good - if not better than the 410, and the 410 definitely has a great clean sound. For crunch, it has an OD built in that you can kick on. Pretty good for bluesy stuff. If I had to pick out a weak spot on it, though, this would be it. Still - I like it better than the crunch channel on the 410. I actually use the "crunch channel" (definitely higher gain) as my lead channel. It was completely based on the original block letter 5150, and it is absolute bliss. You do have some good control over how much distortion you use, but it has a far superior sound to the 410 OD 3 (in any mode, too), IMO. Just fat and not harsh. Very smooth. Finally, I use the main lead channel as more of a cleaner distortion for cleaner leads and rhythm. I have to turn the gain down a lot to get this, but it cleans up nicely without losing a lot of tone like the OD channels on the 410 do. It distorts out about as much as the 410 does on both OD channels, but doesn't get near as flabby. The footswitch on the 410 isn't all that bad, but the Invective footswitch is absolutely killer. You can basically get 9 presets and hit any of them to get a solo boost. Easier to use than the 410. I'm not here as a Peavey spokesperson, and I don't just absolutely hate the 410, but I spent SOOOO much time tweaking the 410. New tubes, cabinets - and I just didn't want to get into modding it. I've been spoiled for years with a Mk IIC Boogie, and I just couldn't quite get the 410 where I wanted it. When I got the Invective, I had a much better sound than the 410 after 5 minutes of fiddling with the EQ's, etc.. If you're going to be spending $2-4k on an amp, you shouldn't have to mod it, IMO! Quite honestly, the Invective gets a better lead sound than my Boogie, and I never thought I'd say that!

Another big difference between these amps was a MAJOR factor for me in selling my original JVM and getting an HJS...... on the HJS they doubled the speed of the processor that handles changing modes from 8 to 16 mhz, and the result is ZERO lag (dropout) when changing channels. It's instantaneous! Aside from that, the JVM Forum had a TON of mods to "fix" the many issues people had with the original JVM, and many of the key mods from that forum (or variations thereof) found their way into the HJS. The only mod I felt I wanted on my HJS was the negative feedback mod, and I was able to use a jumper wire for it (no adjustable control, it's fixed) so my amp can go back to stock in about 10 minutes, not that I ever plan to sell it. As far as I'm concerned, the HJS is the only Marshall I'll ever need because it's pretty much all of them in one amp.

The Js has a better feel to it when playing and the over all tone is better too.... even when using a good noisegate pedal with the regular jvm410 it still has more noise than the js version 50w version of the js would of been nice!

The funny thing about this video is my original JVM sounds more like the your HJS mode, but even les scooped(Carsten Stepanowicz JVM on RU-vid sounds identical to mine). The original JVM in this video is very very scooped sounding.Mine is punchy and non scooped. I bought mine used about 6 years ago, so do not know if it was modded, or if they swapped in different tubes. I loved the sound right away with my Les Paul and USA Jackson Fusion. In this video I defiantly prefer the HJS.

I have the JS (WIth the 1960AV, which kind of compensates the darker character of the HJS). First week I didn't know what it was about....not chugging, kind of loose low end......and after a few tests, I used a Boss GE7 with just a slight inverted V to push the mids a bit (400hz +2 dB, 800Hz +4 dB, 1.6kHz +2 dB) and there it was.........kick, attack, punch...all of it. A few months after I could test a JVM410H, which I thought it would have the missing "ooomph" but it didn't..... it was harsher and thinner sounding. And let's not forget the 4 noise gates the HJS has........cleanest sounding amp I've ever had. I was in a band with another guitarist with an ENGL Invader...every soundcheck was the same.......5 minutes for the ENGL "too boomy, too harsh, kill the treble a bit, etc...". WIth the HJS it was an A power chord and the sound guy immediately went "that's it, next !!"........ it might take a while to figure out, and it might not be as immediate as other amps, but in a live situation it's an eyebrow raiser !! :)

I can clearly say the worst Marshall I ever had was the original JVM, noisy, thin and harsh, you described it perfectly, also the gate in the HJS is great. I know I tried to convince myself the original was better. Now I'd say to anyone get a JCM (any of them) or the HJS instead

Iv never found a noise gate to work well with subtle playing, this included my jvmhjs. But it’s a great amp. Do wish it was a bit tighter at times and I find its cleans almost in useable for straight cleans since it’s so thin and bright for me . But It’s distortion is awesome. I might prefer the sound of the plexi studio though as Iv heard it online. Fair amounts of gain and distortion but tighter and clear than the jvmhjs

JS sounds rounder, beefier, less shrill in the high end, and more "organic" thanks to the reduced negative feedback that gets that awesome power tube saturation at lower volumes.

Hi Marshall 4x12 cab with V30 speakers with SM57+MD421 blended. I love both amps and i don´t prefer one over the other..it really depends. I own 10 Amps and the JVM´s belong to my favourite ones over the years. I used the both heads with my Band live and at rehearsals although i mainly use Kemper live these days. With both Heads you can play any kind of style it really doesn´t matter

Hi Tone Hammer Thanks for response. I have jvm 410h, i like the sound but have problem with feetback. We are very loud band and with 57 classics pickups by OD1 orange mod come noisy feedback. I have Isp decimator if it leads directly to the head input will help not all. If it leads to the effect loop something that changes into the resulting sound. Soo i am thinking of buying Hjs. Martin

Hi..use a ISP Decimator G-string which is for front + loop. Its dead quiet with this one..even the hum gone without tone suck. But yes the Gate in the HJS works great too but its a quiet different sounding Amp imo. Both are awesome!

The jvm od channels are definitely tighter BUT in a live setting the compression make these channels disappear in the mix unless you crank them, then you have a real unity problem between clean, crunch and od1 od2. The jvm with the anti compression mod spanks the hjs model imo
@gitarman666
@gitarman666 Год назад
Just back off the gain/drive it will cut and still have plenty of distortion Most players use way to much distortion because it sounds good at home but in the studio they will high pass and cut you lows hard And live the distortion just makes a mushy mess especially with two guitarist I never play with another guitarist it’s easy to fill nearly any tune and one less mouth to feed

@@gitarman666 You are correct. Up the volume and back down on gain to get a more open sound. The amp has loads of gain so often it doesnt need to be past 12 o clock gainwise.

No..i can tell you the hjs is way way quieter then the regular jvm when it comes to noise. Also..when you use the built in gate - which is the best built in gate that i know, the Amp is dead quiet on all channels

JS is too tame....the original 410h is a wild beast. Plus would much rather have the built in reverb than the noose gates I have a noose gate already but a good onboard reverb is hard to beat
@tonehammer7276
@tonehammer7276 3 года назад
I also have a isp decimator 2...but with the JS i dont need it. Best built in gate out there i know. I personally dont like the built in reverb much..i use other reverbs in pedalformat. The JS is much more organic and thick. It still has a ton of gain. Yes it needs a boost to be tight..but the JS handles boosts way better than the regular jvm. After all the time i sold my regular 410 and use the JS as my main Amp with a SD-1. I realized way later that the SD-1 works better with the JS than the Maxon for me. I prefer the Maxon with my other Amps.

I do have the js. I wish I had gotten a second just Incase anything happens to the first . I will say it doesn’t have a lot of bottom and is a lil loose sounding but it’s a great amp overall. I do have a 40watt blackstar that sounds thicker and has more Bottom end to it if I want. But it isn’t as dynamic. The JS is a great amp. Although I am listening to clips of the studio plexi 20 watt and that head sounds pretty good. I like the way it clips and distorts
@heythere6983
@heythere6983 2 года назад
Although recently I will say, the js has an issue where it’s midrange isn’t bogey but rather soft and the high end is where it’s got more presence . Revisiting third video it seems the original jvm has more bite in the midrange as one would expect from a marshall. The js can be loose and flubby and soft in the midrange. Iv actually been looking at new amps after owning this amp for years. It’s a decent sound but I’m lookin for something with more midrange presence and less high end fizz and less gain too. It’s not a particularly tight sound. I actually think I prefer the original at points here. But I’m lookin at plexis or maybe other brands altogether . I have liked the js but I do think it’s majorly overhyped and it’s not the best marshall ever as many claim , that’s for sure

The Regular 410 sounds compressed..and thats fine if you are kid and wanna crank everything to the right and have a shit ton of saturation..but if you are in a working band where you need a multitude of TONE...there is no substitute for the JS..simply the best Marshall ever created, and believe me it does Plexi tones I know I owned one of the best Plexis out there it was Hot rodded and I searched for that tone for years..and found it again with my JS.
