In the unlikely event Josh reads this comment, (or more likely Joshua tells him) I can save you some time. I worked for Marshall when the blues breaker/drivemaster/shredmaster were released. I was a Test Engineer. For fault finding on that line they gave me the Circuit diagrams for the blues breaker , GUVNOR, & Shredmaster. I can tell you as an employee at the time of release; The Guvnor and Drive master WERE IDENTICAL at that time and the marketing copy was full of marketing BS a lot of which was significantly excessive in my I'm-a-very-factual-guy opinion. The Marketing team DID NOT hold my esteem. It's only "Improved" in the sense that the case is more practical in use. Do not waste time in that rabbit hole.
When I was a kid I got a guvnor pedal signed by Jim Marshall… I wanted to protect the signature by lacquering over it….. and it melted into a gold pen puddle😂
My old Guv nor was stolen a few years back and I couldn't find another one, second hand or new, so happy I can finally get a new one. Loved that pedal. Always cut through the mix when needed and stacks great with the big muff.
Been watching more and more of your shows lately. Love them. Great pedals here. Never heard of that overdrive preamp before. Would love to get my hands on one 😎 keep up everything you guys do 🤙🏻
Great episode Josh. I’ve never tried any Marshall pedals but I’m definitely intrigued. I’ll have to add them to my mile long list of pedals I want to try. So many good pedal makers out there, we’re spoiled these days.
I worked at Marshall’s in 1987, the silver jubilee year. From my faded memory I seem to remember that the Gov’nor was being developed by Steve Grindrod in that year. Before it was given the name Gov’nor, my friend who worked in the development dept suggested the name ‘dirtbox’, which for obvious reasons was turned down. LED clipping was already being used in Marshall valve amp designs and I seem to remember that the silver jubilee amps had LED clipping in the pre amp circuit. I tested many of these amps. Jim Marshall was indeed the Gov’nor, a great man to work for.
