What's your favorite Marshall amp? Lets talk about it!

1969 100 watt superbass "metal face plexi". Answer to the clean headroom: fryette power station and an OD pedal (I like the rat for 80s rock).

I bought brand new in 87 the JCM 2550 version of the jubilee. Still have it. Only difference is output watts and color I believe.

I’ve had a 2210 since the mid ‘90ies and picked a 2203 up last Saturday. Had the 2210 recapped. Since then it barks again like in the early years. The 2203 has a lot less gain, but the same agressive bark. It needs boost, I’m using a Schaffer-replica and an OD-808 for that. Still think the 2210 comes really close. I still like the ease of the 2210 as opposed to of the 2203 with boost pedals. Might need to test an SD-1, that was the best 2203 sound I ever heard. What they both do best is bark. No other brand barks like a Marshall.

When I ordered a Design Store version of the Jubilee with a matching 2x12 cab, I had to wait a few weeks for it to arrive. During that time, I watched possibly every video on RU-vid about the amp and was surprised by how many people managed to make it sound terrible. In contrast, you, sir, make it sound great! At one point, I owned both the Studio Vintage and the Studio Jubilee, both great amps in their own right and I bet I would enjoy the JCM800 as well.

Wow - thank you for those kind words! I didn’t know a Design Store version existed, I’ll have to look into that! I really dig my studio Vintage and Classic. That said, I’d love to have the 100 watt versions but I just can’t afford em. For the Plexi, I doubt I’d be able to crank it to the required volume (had the Bugera clone but full volume was just too much - worried about the neighbors wanting to kill me LOL). With a 2203 though I think I could get what I’m looking for below Plexi volume. Alas, maybe one day LOL. Thanks for watching!

@@TheGuitarNerdShow yep, that's why I use the attenuator. To set up the power section first to get that nice smooth "engine" sound without harshness and hi-end fizz and then I fiddle with the preamp gain to find that break-up point between clean and distorted where the sound is not compressed but starting to be punchy

Good video and awesome playing! I own both, a 1982 2203 and a new Re-Issue Jubilee. The 800 is a bit more aggressive and percussive sounding, the Jubilee darker and compressed. The Jubilee is however a lot more user friendly: more gain on tap, awesome loop, great Master Volume that tapers very well and very responsive EQ controls. Both are awesome! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

There's some great playing and great tones here. Its hard for me to tell which is better. Both sound great. The 50w jubilee was my first Marshall. I've been hooked and exclusively Marshall since. I remember them as having a lot of midrange. I ended up falling in love with the other JCM800s...the split channel ones. But I agree that the 2203 is fantastic too. Have a 2203X and a 1990 Jubilee 2555. Both are fantastic amps and have that "Marshall" sound. You did an excellent job describing the differences. I generally play the Jubilee at home because it sounds great at a MV of just under 2 and the EQ is very responsive. Additionally, as you point out, it's basically a 3 channel amp with Clean, Crunch, and Lead modes. I can achieve any tone that I am looking for with the Jubilee. The 2203X is more classic Marshall roar. For cranked tones, the Jubilee needs the MV at about a 7 to really shine, but the 2203X does that between 4 and 5. The 2203X is a much louder amp to my ear. But in my 8x8 space, there is not a lot of opportunity to crank these amps. For recording, I use a Suhr Reactive Load IR and it does an amazing job in getting authentic cranked Marshall tones without forcing everyone, including the cat, to need to leave the house. GREAT video and excellent playing too! I subscribed!

Great video. My Marshall Studio preferences would be Plexi, Jubilee, JTM and JCM800 last. However the Jubilee jumps ahead of the Plexi due the master volume. Would be interested in a video comparing the Jubilee with different cabinets (at least Combo vs Half Stack). Guessing the best option is the head and half stack. But at almost twice the cost of the combo, is it worth it?

Great video - i just bought a Jube studio and while i love the functionality, part of me wonders if i should have gone with the 800 for that thinner more classic marshall tone. Is the 800 studio really impractical at home? Man you're way much more practiced than i am but your taste and style is really similar to mine. Soon as you played Watchin' You, you had a subscriber.
@TheGuitarNerdShow
@TheGuitarNerdShow 27 дней назад
Thank you so much for your kind words! Ya know, when I make these videos, I never know what I'm going to play, so most of the time it ends up being a mix of off the top of my head stuff and then that'll trigger my memory of other licks. In that regard, Watchin' You just happened. Then I had to pause and figure out the riff real quick cause I've never played it but grew up a Kiss freak so that riff's etched into my brain LOL!!!!! With regard to the 'lil 800, you can turn it down fairly low, especially in 5 watt mode but you'll probably need to hit it with a drive pedal. That's ok, though, that's how most people use an 800 for that type of sound. Thank you for your kind words!

Slight correction: the 2203/2204 does not have an additional gain stage or additional preamp tube over the 1959 or 1987. Having said that, absolutely killer demo of both. This is how they should sound!
@TheGuitarNerdShow
@TheGuitarNerdShow 19 дней назад
There’s no additional tube, but I believe there IS an additional gain stage - in the older Plexi style amp, unless it’s got the cascaded gain stage mod (aka Randy Rhoads mod) the signal passes through one half of V1. With the Roads mod, as in the 220x the signal passes through both sides, one after the other, enabling the extra preamp drive. This is as it was explained to me by a couple well respected amp techs/builders. But still just the three 12ax7’s. Thank you for watching!!!

From what I understand the circuit of the late 70’s 2293 is slightly different (and better sounding). But essentially it’s the same amp - I mentioned in my video that the 2203 basically became the JCM800. A late 70’s 2203 is definitely on my bucket list! Thanks for watching!

Now compare the JCM 900? 😁 Really enjoy my 1959HW full stack; for similar tones at lower volume, the Origin 50 does well enough - even better when you consider the price. I know it's not everyone's fav Marshall, but I really enjoy my JVM410H - it has much of the history of Marshall in a single box. As usual, opening up the master addresses some complaints some have; it's not going to sound identical in a side by side comparison, but if you want a versatile Marshall channel switcher it's great IMO. I have other amp brands for other things, but honestly nothing sounds better to me than Marshall's. edit: my favorite Marshall amp? Marshall should update the 800 with modern features. My old one doesn’t even have fx loop. All of their new amps should have power scaling, updated EQ, as well as IR outs like all 21st century amps should by now. They need to ditch the cheap small amp and headphones and such and focus on creating better flagship amps instead of riding the coattails of their betters that were doing this before them.
@TheGuitarNerdShow
@TheGuitarNerdShow 25 дней назад
Unfortunately the headphones and all that stuff accounts for upwards of 90% of the Marshall company’s income. That said, they need to do what the new CEO has said they’re gonna do and funnel that money into their amp making and bring the company into modern times, without losing sight of what got them here. I’m optimistic. Thanks for watching.

@TheGuitarNerdShow
@TheGuitarNerdShow 22 дня назад
I hear that, but at the same time, it gets to sounding more full. Truthfully, I think the sweet spot is somewhere in the 4 to 5 range on the MV. Preamp volume around 6 is also about right. Above that it starts to get pretty mushy - though an SD-1 can help with that. Thank you for watching!

Well why’d ya skip? The whole objective is to check out the differences and choose which one you dig more LOL!!!!! I don’t know that I have a preference. It all depends on what I’m playing through them. Thanks for watching!!

@TheGuitarNerdShow well yeah, for others to judge and comment, but a brash conclusion on camera would be refreshing.

JCM800 is a SERIES, not a MODEL! There are at least seventeen JCM800 models that I can name, possibly more. BE MORE SPECIFIC.

While that is true, I used the SERIES name because the 2203/2204 is what a lot of people think of when they hear JCM800. That said, I did mention in the video that I was speaking specifically of the single channel JCM800 model 2203/2204 variants. Additionally the thumbnail clearly depicts a Jubilee and a model 2203/2204 head. My apologies if that wasn’t specific enough for you. Thanks for watching.

In some ways yes. To me the Jubilee feels like the natural progression from the 2203. Thank you for watching!

Rectifier still sounds better

I think it all depends on what you're going for. If you're going for the drop tuned brutal chug stuff, then yeah, the Rec is king but even then an unmodified Dual Rec pretty much needs a boost in front to clean up the flubby low end and at that point, either one of these amps will chug pretty mercilessly as well. For anything other than that though, my Marshalls are usually my go to. Also, combining an 800 (or a Jubilee) with a Rectifier is even better! But you've given me an idea: maybe I'll do a 'will it chug' video on one or both of these amps and compare it with my Dual Rectifier. Could be interesting... Thanks for watching!
