Marshall Studio Vintage 20 Head Review (A SMALL PLEXI)
Marhsall have released a new line of amps. They have the Studio Classic (which is a smaller version of the JCM 800), and the Studio Vintage which is a smaller version of the famous Marshall 1959 SLP 100 watt head. The Studio Vintage is a 20 watt all valve (or tube if you're American) head, and it's plenty loud. The thing is it can also get pretty quiet. So in short it's a new, small, compact, and slightly more affordable Plexi.
In this video I check it out, and also see if it can do an Yngwie sound. I hope you enjoy the video.

The gear I most often use.
A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

I love the way the picking sound comes through with such definition and the fat mids. That’s the characteristic of a real plexi circuit; it doesn’t distort the sound but just amplifies it. All the clarity comes through. Real plexi sound. Probably better to buy an 87xl when you’re spending money at this level but it’s still a cool amp.

I am desperate for a new amp and I’ve been looking at some Marshalls, this one in particular. I don’t need to peel any paint off the walls but not opposed to using an attenuator either. I returned my DSL 40 a while back and I’d rather not get another one of those but they are pretty good for the coin. Anyway, you said jumping the channels isn’t how you’d use it and I was wondering why? I managed to play the combo and didn’t jump the channels at first and it wasn’t a sound I cared for… am I missing something? I’ve been looking for a vintage modern combo, any thoughts on the vintage modern series? I’ll look through your videos and see if you’ve done a review. Thanks man! 🤘🏻😷🤘🏻

Elmo, you are getting some DELICIOUS tones there! I especially like the way this amp sounds with a Stratocaster (my favorite guitar). And with the Fender "Yngwie Malmsteen" signature overdrive pedal... (drool, drool, drool) This blend of components is tasty AF. I like how both Marshall amplifiers and Fender Stratocaster guitars retain clarity and definition even when driven really hard. BTW: thank you for that very inexpensive "additional volume control in the effects loop" tip. I shall have to try that on my newly acquired DSL40CR, perhaps!

If you're up to it, a video where you compare the Astoria Custom to one of your Plexis through your 4x12 with a clean boost in front would be real informative to see - challenge :-). From what I've seen on youtube reviews, that's basically what the Astoria Custom is, albeit at 3 times the price. :-) Cheers!

My review of this review. First off this is a great review demoing how he uses his plexi amps to get his tones which are true to the Malmstein lovers out there.Now for the rest, he did not push it so we could hear the over driven classic Marshall plexi crunch, the demo without his overdrive pedal sounded like your typical low watt clean combo tones of most any tube amp maxed gain setting, and yea single coiled so it stayed bright and not too flabby. I need to hear it in 5 watt mode without a volume master in the effects loop with some classic PAF humbuckers to hear if it delivers the goods. I'm guessing it has micro phonic issues played like that and he avoided that setup all together. So yea the Fender Malmstien overdrive pedal sounds pretty good, more modern tone than the older DOD Malmstien overdrive.This guy has plexis but can't play them loud enough to get the goods! What Marshall should have done is add a PPI master volume like the vintage modern head has in the back which was the big mod to get the amp loudness crunch at lower volumes without using a power brake, , even at 5 watts probably on the loud side for bedroom volumes? But for people dreaming about Plexi Marshall tones , nothing delivers better than a mini Marshall Plexi amp . Seeing is believing! Get it ? going to,check out some other reviews for the real cranked plexi test. Even Malmstein uses his overdrive to build upon the amps cranked dirty tones, but his pedal has lotsa gain so you don't need to crank the amp for the gain ,just the tone and feel , Also there shouldn't be any hiss using the amp straight in bypassing your overdrive even when it is cranked on full. or was that with the overdrive engaged ?
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 5 лет назад
Using a Plexi on full, without an overdrive, there's a ton of noise. Even on lower settings there will be some. Having stood next to Yngwie in Miami, while he played, looking at his setup, he had the Fender Yngwie OD set on full blast, so he's basically just running everything on full. I do that too when I record. The Studio Vintage won't be quiet enough for a bedroom, even at 5 watts. It was quite loud still.

@@MrPolevaulter i thunk he uses a noise gate? i have seen a older video where he describes his gear, pedals, he use to use old DOD overdrives , before his signature ones, in the video he had 2 of them in series ! I guess the 2nd one for a lead boost? Yea that's noisy! How noisy a plexi is depends on whats plugged into it and the preamp tubes too,, Its basically like a master volume amp but masters always set to 10. That noise is Volume noise since its so loud more than gain noise like pedals get. May have hum noise too. I install the dual pot Post Phase inverter master and a pre phase master volume in my older marshalls, metal faces not plexis but similar. When you crank a plexi its overdriving the phase inverter stage 3rd 12ax7 that gives the crunch, output tubes just follow the phase inverters signal. so that's how a PPI master works, you get the overdrive of the amp without the high volumes. i never had an unmolested old marshall so modding them is no big deal. We are both big fans of Yngwie, i saw him close up at some small bars in Long Island. What do you think about his singing too? Lol Keep rocking the neoclassical Shred , your good !

I get that scream" that you pointed out sometimes with my Egnater troubadour and it's awful. It's intermittent and I can't find a rhyme or reason to it. That SV 20 is just the real go and if i can afford it I just might get one. It sounds great and I know that this is stupid but just looking at that amp makes me want it. It just looks the business to me and I'm notoriously shallow and crass and if it looks like a Plexi I want it. Great tones, Elmo. Great episode !!

So I guess if you didn’t run a volume pedal in the loop you’d get more gain out of the amp as the power tubes would saturate more? Really great amp, I’m wondering whether to swap my Friedman Runt for one...

Yup, Marshall rules them all. 1 question though, what kind of a cabinet would you want to use with this? It’s only 20 Watts, so if you use 2 10”s, there wouldn’t be need for each speaker to be more than 10W RMS right?
@MrPolevaulter
@MrPolevaulter 3 года назад
Personally I just used what I always use, the 1960 AHW. Go for the speakers that sound the best, and don't think too much about watts. Can't think of a single cab off the top of my head that couldn't handle 20 watts.

Cue the "New marshall in town"-jokes. Sounds decent actually. Especially interesting for me before you used the pedals as I am currently not using my own pedals and the cleanliness made me think about a pedalfree living 👀. But I must say, for 20w that sounds like a beast! I was ready to knock Marshall once more.... I approve this review Elmo Helluntai-Plexi Karjalainen. 👍

@@MrPolevaulter I think you would get loads of views and love the amps. They are killer. Probably the best gain sounding channel I've ever heard on a ss amp. Also, very simple. Just two channels. Clean and gain. They have a pro series crush amps that are 60 watt combos either 1 x 12 or 2 x 12, and they have a 120 watt head. Both also have a buffered effects loop and take pedals well, but you DON'T NEED AN OVER DRIVE OR DISTPRTION PEDAL ON THE DIRTY CHANNEL. It is just killer and the combos are very afdordable. Especially the 1 x 10 35 watt. However anything below 60 watts in the series have no loop. I tried one and it was a very small 20 watt LOUD. 1x 8 and told them how much I liked it. The guy that replied from Orange told me they are built with same stuff as their famous Rockoverb amps, but just not tubes, but same transformers, caps, etc. You will like them I think.

Hey Elmo, didn't you noticed a poweramp compression difference between your 50 and that 20 w? i guess the little one should sound way way "better" (at equal loudness ) cause of the pushed final tubes. i had the Origin but i gave off that too and i'm really considering this little gem, i think it could really be a classic in 10yrs.
@MrPolevaulter
