A pedal shootout to show the range of sounds and the sonic differences of the vintage Marshall "The Guv'nor" and the current model Marshall GV-2 "Guv'nor Plus". The recorded examples are not primarily intended to sound awesome or perfect. I wanted to show the behaviour of the two pedals in certain situations.
The guitar recordings in this video have been made with a Marshall MA50C, picked up with a Sennheiser e840S and enriched with stereo chorus, delay and reverb to add ambience.
The BOSS Loop Station was used to save the original input sound, thus making it possible to make one to one comparison recordings. I made separate line recordings and you can find these on my website. You can send these mono recordings to your own guitar amp to get an idea how these Marshall pedals could sound with your setup.

Ein Demovideo, um das Klangspektrum und die klanglichen Unterschiede des alten Marshall "The Guv'nor" und dem aktuellen Modell Marshall GV-2 "Guv'nor Plus" zu demonstrieren. Die aufgenommenen Beispiele sind nicht in erster Linie dazu gedacht, perfekt oder wuchtig zu klingen. Ich wollte das Verhalten der beiden Pedale in bestimmten Situationen zeigen.
Die Gitarrenaufnahmen in diesem Video wurden mit einem Marshall MA50C gemacht, abgenommen mit einem Sennheiser e840S und angereichert mit Stereo Chorus, Delay und Hall, um den Klang räumlicher zu gestalten.
Die BOSS Loop Station wurde benutzt, um den Originalklang ohne den Röhrenverstärker und die zusätzlichen Effekte zu sichern. Ich habe separate Line-Aufnahmen damit erstellt und ihr könnt diese auf meiner Website finden. Diese Mono-Aufnahmen könnt ihr dann an euren eigenen Gitarrenverstärker senden, um einen Eindruck davon zu bekommen, wie diese Marshall Pedale mit eurem Equipment klingen könnten.

I have the Guv'nor GV-2, and I start with the EQ settings at 12 o'clock, and with minor tweaking I can get a great sound even from my cheap 1998 Crate GX-15 practice amp... I have a 2002 Gibson Les Paul, and it sings through this pedal... With my 1991 Marshall JCM 900 50 watt 2x12 combo, it screams... This pedal is very versatile, I love it!

Very well spotted! Indeed I had to replace them, because the screw threads were worn-out. I bought the replacement jacks at banzaimusic in Germany. The item numbers are SKU19709 and SKU19710. I had to file them down, though, because they aren't an exact replacement.

Using these pedals right can get you to Gary Moore territory, but you need some power amp distortion from a Marshall amp.

That's nothing in particular. To avoid copyright violation I never use riffs from other musicians' songs in my demos. This part of the demo might have been influenced by the first Joe Jackson albums "Look Sharp!" and "I'm The Man". If it is very similar with another existing song it's pure coincidence.

Uh, I use the Guvno'r MK1 to boost my amp, so the insert section have to be noise gate... sound Malmsteen alike, I know it's different setup. So if I buy GV2 version I need to bring it to electronic workshop to get it added? Uhm

I’m just in the process of doing some mods (not cutting out C22, but changing it along with about ten other components) after watching a video on RU-vid by someone that was SO thorough and explained why the new one is too bassy and not the same sound. In an inadequate nutshell (check out his video it’s easy to find) they left some of the signal circuitry he same, but they scaled the EQ section x10, so they SHOULD have changed the other components to filter freq correct. Also they added that “deep” circuit such that even set fully CCW it affects the circuit. The mods in the video allow one to still use it (if you run the pedal into smaller amps it will give more Marshall punch, but in larger or bassier amps, it kills the sound, way too much low freq as mentioned here too) and lastly they use a different op amp that has a wider rail voltage so some addition to the power circuit. In that video his mods, when he demoed between an original Guvnor and the GV-2 sounded JUST the same!

@@PepeMusic it is a very useful video! I had one GV-2 and after deciding to try the mods bought another one used. First thought was to make sure they were identical, one though is I think made in India, the other somewhere else (the mod guy mentions this, but they stilll should be identical) but there definitely were differences between the two. One was darker but had some good settings but they were definitely different. Your video helped me a lot to decide with the mods, if they work I get the best of both. Still can use deep, etc. but can get more of the original sound. Thanks!

Are you powering the gv-2 using only a 9V battery?

I used batteries for the still photos, but for the recordings I used a BOSS RPW-7 halfrack power supply. There was no difference in sound with batteries or a good 9V power supply.

I have only tried it with my Fender Stratocaster and through my Marshall tube amp. I cannot tell how it sounds through a solid state amp.

The old one is old and looks cooler, but it sounds like shit compared to the newer "Plus" model. I've owned them both and kept,the newer one even though it's not the cool one to look at, I use pedals for their sound.

I bought a GV2 on Ebay, thinking I would get some great Marshall overdrive from it. Not so much. I ended up selling it and havent missed it since. Boss DS1 is cheaper, more widely available and sounds better.

I have had an early DS-2 and the BOSS DF-2, which I have owned three times, does also have the same distortion sound, but I don't really like it. The GV-2 could sound better, that's without question, but I like it a lot more than the DS-1. But comparing these two is like comparing apples and oranges. We have to keep in mind that the GV-2 is an overdrive with a four-band EQ in comparison to the DS-1 which is a distortion with a totally different sound and a simple tone knob. In the end it's like with any other pedal: it either nails the sound we are craving for, or it doesn't. And often I see what kind of pedals people play and I think "Hey man, I could never be happy with these" - and vice versa! Thank God we all have different taste! :)

@@BillyTwanger it's horses for courses, ds1 is a great pedal if you want to sound like Nirvana, but like you said for Gary Moore's tone comes from The Guvnor. In reality there's no such thing as the best tone its all subjective, and depends on personal preference, personally, i wouldn't mind owning both pedals, you might find a nice way of combing the two.

I don't think he would normally - but to 'demo' a pedal, you need to express the full range of adjustment. And i disagree, the original has a much warmer bottom end, a massively superior slicing treble, a far more transparent & dynamic midrange. I am a bit gutted coz I like the look (and price!) of the new one. I HATE my tone being dependant on old fussy pedals it will cost a fortune to replace... If you can do it with BOSS, why wouldn't you? - is my motto. Stay healthy out there Beery!

I've had both at some point over the last 30 years and they're both great pedals (especially the 1st generation), but the black box Carl Martin Plexitone and Friedman BE-OD completely smokes them.

@@nailed2theX There must be something wrong with the one they tested. The original black one is far better - certainly if your intention is to replicate the sound of a decent Marshall valve amp cranked up. If you want fizzy, toppy tones then get the new one. Having said that, I am using the pedal as a boost through a vintage Marshall JCM800 and a vintage 1960 4x12 cab - through good vintage gear it sounds far better than the new one. Through crap the new one may work better. On this demo they both sound awful to be honest.f

@@shaunkelly9860 very interesting, you have any clips? There is one original for sale locally but being covid and all, I can’t try it. Also, according to your setup it seems if you crank the gain on the amp and use some of the guvnor gain, you could get death metal tones. Did you ever try?

Well, that's sad. I love my MIJ Fender Stratocaster to pieces. When I did the recordings for this demo it was my only electric guitar, otherwise I had demonstrated the pedals with humbucker sounds as well. Nowadays I also have a Dean Vendetta 1.0 that I really like, but it will never replace my Stratocaster.
