I had one only yesterday=- telling me I had won a prize :( I obviously did not fall for it ) Nice to see Andertons have addressed this issue :) I love the Pink Tacho- when can I expect delivery lol
I got one an hour ago. That spam is getting so bad soon people will stop commenting at all. You Tube already screws content providers paying less or at all for "non subscriber" views when subs are still watching but just behind vpns or not logged in for google to track them. This pisses off the google therefore you guys get punished.
Can I ask Pete, or any of the presenters, if they changed from their usual amp to one they demo’d or reviewed as they liked the amp better than their original amp
I want Pete to keep exploring his metal playing until it reaches a point in the near future where I can tune into the Anderton’s channel and see him wearing all black and ripping Inferi riffs in C standard
"That's the best trick a pony can do!" Yes indeed. Guitar amps give us such a range of sounds and colors and textures, and we all appreciate them all. But that snarl...that roar....still gets me *right here* after hearing it for nearly 50 years.
In the very early 80's my live rig was 2 full JCM 800 stacks. Todays 800's have way more gain then I remember my original 800's had. The first 800's gain was way closer to the SV20H in this video. I think there's a myth about old Marshall amps- they weren't distortion monsters, they were just plain loud.
AC/DC is the classic example. Loud, yes. Heavy gain or even heavy distortion, no. I almost always turn the volume knob on my guitar to about 7 to get it right.
Exactly. We all needed sd1/ds1s... modded marshalls wasn"t really an option. Basic marshall and a basic boss maxed on output, low on drive, was how we rocked. Even my jubilees don't sound as gainy as videos of the jube reissues do.
My 1983 jcm 800 has nowhere near the amount of gain the reissues have. It's more of a crunch amp. Great for ac dc, it also does a great van halen 1 (if your ears can take it) with the volume cranked, but it never really gets beyond that. Definitely not going to give you any sort of metal tone without a pedal.
Nicely done! They all sound great! The SV20 is my favorite of the bunch. The gainer amps sound a bit congested to me and can’t get as clean as the SV20. There’s always a compromise when gain is added to the classic plexi circuit. I also believe those bright Marshalls will cut better in a mix/band environment, and the other amps will sound more pleasant in a bedroom player environment.
You are right . To my ears , the Friedman’s are overly compressed and boomy . Prob great for power chord chugging but the Marshall sounds more open . It has a bigger dynamic range .
I've got the SV20H "Plexi". It's a beautifully clean sounding amp... and then? I add an EQ after the guitar and before the amp and I have that EVH brown sound. Add a fuzz and all of a sudden, some guy named Jimi Hendrix blasts from the 4x12 cabs. I can grab a Tele and twang! It's the most versatile amp I've ever owned and I used to make point to point "Plexi/Bassman" clones using mercury magnetics transformers. I've had (and still have) many tube amps and this one would be my "go to" if I could only have one amp. Cheers!
I'm truly confident that you produce the best possible equipment reviews. Everything is transparent, completely clear, and realistic without the stereo nonsense that some RU-vidrs engage in. It's a clean presentation of equipment just as it is, really. I don't think anyone does it better than you :)
It’s like you just reached into my brain and made the video I really wanted. I’ve been fiddling with different classic amps in shops for a while now, hoping this video helps me decide what I want.
Might look at Ceriatone as well. Make a wide range of clones, and their Marshall clones are absolutely top shelf but for much less $. Yeti, Son of Yeti, and others deliver modded Marshall tones las good as Friedman, IMO.
If you crank the marshall past 3-4, you wont get more volume. it hits the maximum dB there. everything else is introducing gain in the power section. Also the volume pot has a bright cap. So between 6 and 7 on the Sc20 or sv20, you start to have less effect from the bright cap and the tone will sound less shrill.
Yeah that’s the thing with most Marshalls, they want to be loud. More so than the Friedmans that do want to be loud too but manage better tones at lower volume.
This x 1000! Old Marshalls, and their newer reissues, are built to be CRANKED. The power amp distortion is part of the sound, and it thickens the sound as the compression and collapse of the amp begins and the bright cap begins to fade out. You have to run the masters on these, even the JCM 800s and Jubilees, at 6-7 to start getting the goods.
In case you guys are interested: "JCM800" did indeed come from a license plate, but there's more to it. Those amps were originally released in the mid/late ’70s as the Master Model Lead (2203 for 100 watts, 2204 for 50), but they flopped, because people expected the master volume to give them automatic cranked Plexi tones, not a new sound altogether. Jim Marshall believed in the design, though, so after a few years of the Master Model not doing so well, he decided that it should be re-released with a whole new name and self-consciously marketed to hard rockers and punks - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, all them sorts. And with the new name and reputation, the 800 became the New, Scary, Not Your Daddy's Marshall, and all was well.
The SV20 is freaking amazing. It is very versatile with the jumping and channel blending options, which the video does not show. It just shows one setting out of dozens.
@@EdBenji nope not at all, my mate has one exactly the same, the volume from these things is unreal, so for breakup you need to drive turn up the volumes to unusable levels unless you wanna wreck your hearing or your neighbours lol, so the only 2 ways to get drive outta them is keep the volumes down to a level that's usable as to give you some headroom and use a drive pedal in front but now your not getting that pure plexi sound from the amp (like what you have purchased the thing for I guess) but able to use your time based effects somewhat sounding better but not as good still, to get the pure plexi drive out of it at a usable volume I use an aracom dag 150 attenuator and then you gotta compromise. It's just the way it is if you know how tube amps work, I rest my case, ps the aracom is the best attenuator going it dosent affect your tone, check em out, I've used loads of different ones and nothing touches em. I rest my case 😀
I’ve had the SV20 and now I’ve got the little sister. It’s night and day. The Friedman has more clarity, incredible bass, 3 gain stages and master volume for home practice. Best amp I’ve owed
@EdBenji might sound that way in a video but in real life they are insanely dynamic. Even the Pink Taco if you lower the gain a bit it has a full range of overdrive just based on how hard you play.
I’ve owned a JTM45, several Friedman’s and have tried a victory sherif and I always come back to the friedman. I picked up a little sister and it is the most versatile amp I’ve ever owned..
I *wish* you'd have included a mini-Jubilee in the shootout... Marshall's own 'hot-rodded JCM' amp, that manages to get the 'thump without the fizz' more like the 'boutique' amps demo'd here. I run a Friedman BE-OD Deluxe into mine, for a three channel tone monster for not that much $$$ 🙂
Marshall just has that growl, regardless but those Friedmans sound fantastic. I think the Victory is the winner for me personally, but I'd love to have either of the Friedmans as well.
The Marshalls were classic; the Victory surprisingly good; the Pink Taco was for me, even high gain it was articulate and had a nice bottom end too. (All great amps)
I have a marshall dsl40cr amp and love it. I also have the blackstar dep 10 dual drive and an old Boss sd1 pedal.... Love the combo of these but the Sheriff sounds absolute amazing.... i think ohne of the Best now. Tanks for your great playing
Great video. I think you need to revisit the blindfold challenge to spot the real Marshall like you did with Rob a few years back. These all sounded awesome.
Very impressed how the Victory was getting on! May have to add one to the collection. Love the Friedman tolex options very cool. Of course they sound great too. Least impressed with the Marshalls but I think you guys were right slam it with a pedal to put it over the edge and you're there.
The Pink Taco gain structure is a 3 way switch I dont think they explored all 3 settings in this video just the high gain. There is a lower gain setting which takes you more into the vintage Marshall gain territory, it is certainly more hot rodden JCM800 in style but on the lower setting you can back the gain off and go for a more vintage type of sound.
High gains tones are really dependent on what speaker set up. Isolated they definaly high slight differences, put them in a mix and you can't really tell a difference, now put them through a 1, 2,4x12 loaded with difference speakers and you will have more difference between all the amps. I say get whatever you fancy, but more importantly spend the same amount of time on your cabinet and speakers! More like a different flavor of the same whisky, at the end of the say it's still whisky! The standouts where pink taco and victory 25. Victory had more than one voice but they do all of them extemrly well. Place them in front of a 2x12 or 4x12 with some volume.... Crikey
nicely done. Long time Marshall guy, now primarily use a Friedman WW-20 (modded JJ Jr.), and I thought the JCM 800 sounded compressed compared to all the others. I was impressed with the Victory, but still would pick the Friedmans overall!
Love the Friedmans but that Victory is amazing as well as it seems like you can set up each of the channels to almost match the Pink Taco and Little Sister. Certainly a great value.
I've got the Sheriff 25 running into to 2x12 Victory creamback cab and it's killer! The only soud that's hard to dial in is nice clean tone, because it's a real amp and you need to be at ridiculous volumes to get a nice clean sound from it. My neighbours gave me noise complaints. Worth every penny. I use it with an Orange BHinds Terror, which is also a great amp.
@TybudX Really, about the clean tone? Doesn't the master volume do the trick? Was thinking of getting the 100w version, especially for loads of headroom to use pedals with. Only for rehearsals, though.
@@burt2800 It's just the reality of "that" clean sound. The Sheriffs are stilll wired like old amps. They need to be wide open to get that nice glassy sound. You can get all the sounds at lower volumes than a typical Marhsall but there is only so much a master volume can do. If you have a decent volume pedal that doesn't roll off high end or a multi effects box in the loop you should be good to go. I wish I'd bought the 100w one sometimes, but I don't play live anymore and I don't think I can write it off on my taxes. Maybe I'll sell a few things and get a good attenuator.
@TybudX yeah you're right about the cleans had time to play around with my 100w laney (that is basically a jcm800) and the cleans were ok at lowish volumes but really started shining when turned up. Turned up past useful volume haha
I'm so glad andertons are featuring out of their fender-esc amps. Given they said all these amps where given, I'm sure it opened their eyes to what rock and roll (post 70s) was all about! One thing I can say all these high gain amps are different animal with just a few overdrive or boost pedals (most folks can't even gun 20 watts in most settings) or putting them through a power soak, it really opens up them up at comfortable levels! Pick up any tube screamer (the bugera vintage clone is an awesome cheap option) or boss sd1! Given we don't see much of raber or rob, the high gains tones are a sight for sore eyes or I should says ears
I have that SV20h and the Bugera PS which is essential if you want some good gain tone and still sit in the same room with it. It sounds anemic unless you dime it so I got the V2 Hot Mod, much more useable now.
Same, I know it's much higher wattage, and price, but I was hoping the Sheriff 100 would make it into this shootout, though for obvious reasons I can see why it wasn't.
@@KipCount I think seeing the flagship amps would be a more fun comparison even if this probably is more useful for the average guitar player looking for a 20 watt Marshall
My JCM 800 studio is my go-to amp at the moment. Being used to high gain amps like Mesa Boogie, Blackstar, PRS MT15 etc, the thing I love about the Marshall is that it's more touch sensitive and you have to be a better player to sound good with them. I was surprised how little gain they had, but stick a clean boost in front of it and it's just gorgous!!! I use a J Rockett Archer and it really does make it sing!
@Roberto Porcaro I bought that same Friedman little sister and tried it out with all my guitars then returned it… just didn’t like it except with a telecaster… overall here I liked the Sherif and the Marshall sv20h the best..
The SV20 is a 20 watt amp. I found that Marshall choked it off, so I am planning to get the full 50 watts with some components changed out that i have laying around.
The Friedmans really surprised me with how articulate and defined they were with such a saturated growly gain. I always thought they were "basically" just Marshall, but they are quite a bit better imo. And the Marshalls both a brittle, thin part of their sound that the Friedmans didn't have.
I’ve had two Friedmans and that’s what blew me away about them. The note definition is incredible. The Smallbox was really amazing but couldn’t turn the master past like 2. Condo life.
I was surprised it how well it did against those. Victory really seems to have improved the Sheriff. That last one was really dark and closed off sounding to me.
@@KipCount you are absolutely right.. i ordered one last year but i was disappointed because like you said.. it was dark and it sounded only good with maxed out master volume.. but i try out the new version for sure..✌🏻
I think everything here sounded really good but if I had to pick my favourite here it’s the Victory with the Friedman Pink Taco a close second. I like the extra highs that cut from the Victory and it kinda kills me because as a Smallbox owner, I like to see my brand win. I live in Canada though and Friedman has fabulous customer service even here in Canada and it’s hard for Victory to match that level of customer service due to geography alone. But I love my Smallbox , I love that Dave Friedman himself has answered every single question I have sent to customer service, including asking for more detail on a crazy complicated pedalboard question of all things. I wouldn’t change allegiance for the world. There are all winners here though, every amp sounds really usable to me.
@Lee and @Pete Can you guys move the Decibel meter to the center of the wall so that it sits just below the words "Music Co." ? You know, so's we can see that simultaneously with the strummin' and the pickin' ? Pretty Please?
Friedman Little Sister would be my winning vote - No HDRX 20 in the comparison? It is based on a Marshall after all! Also Friedman Runt would have been good to see/hear? I love my HDRX 20 but was looking at (somewhat unaffordable) Friedman amps before the HDRX 20 was announced 🤙
I've been chasing that Marshall sound since I was a kid. Owned a few English made Marshall's over the years 800, 900, JCM2000 and a TSL. But nothing touches my Friedman.
I am playing the SV20H with my Who Tribute Magic Buzz with a 2x12 DV Mark Cabinet. I changed the speakers with 2 Jensen Neo Tornado that tame the high end perfectly. For Effects and Master Volume purposes I am using a Line6 Pod Go (4cable method). This way I can turn up the Amp Volume to 8 and use the Volume Knob on the Pod as a Master. It sounds truly great. Sometimes you have to try things out. At first I thought it was ridiculous to have an effects loop in an amp like this. But it is perfect. I use the Pod only for boost, Delay, Reverb and Fuzz purposes. Works perfect. I am a big fan of this amp. Perfect for classic rock. The preamp gain is most of the time enough for me. I have 3 Marshalls from the 60s at my house that are my absolute favorite Amps, but since this little sucker only weighs 9 kilo (and the cabinet 12 kilo) there is no real reason to use the other amps. Of course they sound a little different, a little more growl, more deep end, but on the whole the SV20 is almost perfectly the character of the old amps.
This is the vid I was waiting for, thank you guys! The Marshalls sit better in a mix IMO. But I guess the Friedmans with there big bottom are more fun to play true?
@@kanesword9528 I have both the 20W jubilee and the SV20 and like them for different stuff. The jubilee has less output and is harder to dial in. I feel this comparisson is not really fair since marshall tries to be true to the original amps. Whilst the competitors have taken those base marshall tones and improved upon them based on popular mods and demands. In reality most people would use a pedal or hotmod with the jcm800 or plexi and will sound closer to the out of the box sound of a friedman or victory amp.
@@florisvanlingen I had a jubilee, sold it and bought a sv20, didn't like the 4 inputs and a few other things. My new jubilee is coming in a couple days :) I think it's much easier to tune in than the SV20, real 2 channel, plus the clip pull functionality makes it almost a 4 channel amp.
SV20H and Little Sister sounds the best to me. I don't play with a lot of gain to begin with, so those two sound like they'll be better suited for what I play.
Well there is an idea for your upcoming Andertons anniversary next year: A Marshall amp inkl. one of the favourite Mods from the era. Come on, you've got the connections and the customers. All you need is the product ;)
When it comes to the Marshall SV20H or 1987X, and similar models, it's true that they need to be cranked up quite a bit to achieve the desired driven sound. Although this might be beneficial for some, it's worth noting that almost all models typically come with an effects loop. I believe only the HW version might not have one. By connecting it to the effects loop, particularly between other pedals like the VOLUME pedal, you can effectively obtain a master volume on the legendary PLEXI platform. If needed, adding another pedal, such as a Tube Screamer, can help create a perfectly versatile British Rock Blues sound.
I'm sort of down to Little Sister and Sheriff being my favorites of all of them. Wonder which cleans up the best, I'm thinking maybe the Little Sister.
I love how at 4:12 this episode suddenly turned into Coffee Talk with Linda Richman. I was waiting for it to become “a peanut is neither a pea nor a nut, discuss” moment.
@@thespatch True, I was thinking about their old 2x12 and 4x12 with a mix of greens and V30's. The creamback cab would probably have been the best option for the video but I understand not wanting to use a Friedman cab when one of their amps is in the shootout
I want that black Gibson Les Paul custom behind Pete! I really liked the little sister amp, it sounds massive! What was that orange switch that was used for running two amps?
I prefer the Friedmans. They have a superb tone, clarity and punch. In a bandmix they will cut through. Would I buy one of those two? Well, no. For that price I would get a way more versatile Rockerverb III, which imo has all what I miss in Marshalls. Playing RV's for decades now, so I am utterly biased. 😉
Low input on the Marshall jcm800 is for bass or ovation acoustic. On the 4 input: these were bass & lead amplifiers. Organs and other instruments would use the low input. It was allso used to send a signal to a slave amplifier in the area when there were no powerfull p.a systems. But rather vocal systems.
Aye... Shame that Lee never thought it important to mention it, when all around him... Rob, Pete etc were making declarations that were, as it turns out, legally as well as morally, required. As a Victory Amp owner, I feel that the reputation and potentially long term value, if not the sound/quality have been compromised and even tarnished.
@Lee & @Pete @Friedman should totally make a Pink Taco in Black with a Pink face panel on it! Alter a pic of it in all pink and make the shell in black in Shoto Phop! It looks killer, IMHO After all, Girls wanna look bad-ass too!
That’s honestly the worst I’ve ever heard a JCM 800 sound in a video. The shrillness, the treble …my ears. The Friedman sounds great but the price-tag is insane. I like the Victory the best. It’s like everything you love about that classic Marshall sound but just more of it. It’s like a smokin’-hot chick that has a great personality to boot.
It would have been interesting to compare a Marshall Silver Jubilee. It might have worked better without a pedal against the high-gain Pink Taco and Sheriff hot rod mode. From what I understand it is basically Marshall's version of a modded JCM800. It's been my favorite amp that I hope to own one day. :) It would be interesting to do a "hot rodded Marshall" comparison with the Silver Jubilee, the Sheriff hot rod mode, the Pink Taco, and a few other amps. I believe the Bogner amps are basically modded Marshall amps, and I know Orange isn't based on a Marshall (as far as I know), but to me they seem to still have that "British" tone to them but with more bass and mid-range giving them a bit fuzzier drive sound.
I seem to have accidentally fallen into a collection of Friedman amps and Friedman modded and/or serviced vintage Fenders and Marshalls. Worth every penny. Sound so good, so alive, and incredibly tweakable.
I say buy them all! I have a Victory sheriff 44 and soldano 30 head and love them. Combo's I have the Friedman DS 10 combo and Carr Super bee 10 combo and Fender 57 hand wired that are great amps. All have their own place to shine.
