i feel like this song is about being in a relationship with someone who has been in an abusive relationship. they’re always ready to fight, they always need the “upper hand”, they always had to be ready to fight in their past relationship. and they’re scared of their lover leaving them.

I found this song a day after my boyfriend and I had a big fight. There were things I wish I did differently and I wish I was more kind to him. This song inspired me so much that I actually wrote a response version of the song from the other perspective. I hope that maybe he will see it and know that I'm sorry. I wrote this response in 15 mins. The emotion from this song took over and it started to flow and this is what I was left with. Obviously, this is not an original piece by any means, but I hope that Marshmello and Halsey see it and know how their work has inspired people. This song has such an incredible meaning behind it. It's so hard opening up to someone and breaking down your walls when you're so afraid with the idea of love and are so used to shutting yourself off every time it happens. This song really makes us believe that we can trust, we can love and that its okay to confide in others and let go of all those insecurities for once. Love can fix everything after all❤️

My Abnormal Psych professor played this while we were all waiting on our Zoom call to start back in 2021 when all classes were hosted online. He initially played it to accentuate our topic of the week, but was like "oh, snap, sorry, guys. Didn't realize it was about a cruddy relationship. I wanted it to be about people getting along." Bless his heart, but yeah, that's how I found out about this song: my Psych professor wanted to encourage us Ab PSy students to be good.

The way the story of “Be Kind” plays out is that Halsey is talking about a romantic interest. And the said individual has been in a tumultuous relationship(s) in the past, so he/she has issues in terms of opening up to her. Moreover he/she is depicted as the type who is emotionally-defensive, ready to snap every time he/she feels that they are offended. So basically, what Halsey is trying to tell them is that now he/she is in a romance with someone who truly cares for them. And that they doesn’t have to adopt the kind of mentality in which they are afraid to be vulnerable. Instead she presents herself as being “the one”, as in his romantic needs personified. And accordingly, she is entreating him/her to fully open their heart to her. So conclusively, it can be deemed that the person she is singing to is a sensitive individual. But with that being established, she wants him/her to know that she cares for him/her to the point that she will not exploit that vulnerability. And as for the titular statement, although it is never mentioned in the song, the way it would logically relate to the narrative is that she is imparting these words onto him/her. In other words, instead of getting violently emotional when he feels offended, she is telling them to rather “be kind”. Like the lyrics; “I don't know why you hide from the one, and close your eyes to the one, mess up and lie to the one that you love. When you know you can cry to the one, always confide in the one, you can be kind to the one that you love”. She’s saying for them to drop his defensive barriers and open up, when he/she’s sad or needs to talk they should talk to her, not close up.

There is only one person I think of when listening to this song: ME I have a big heart and I am always willing to love and be there for others than being my own best friend. I've realized that I don't give myself the love and attention I give to others. And that I can't give what I don't have. Thank you Halsey for this beautiful song, it helped me have self love before I could ever love someone.
