In a world where humans live alongside monsters, Martha finds herself stuck with a major identity crisis.
Starring big names Rose Byrne and Bobby Canavale, Australian director Christopher Weekes has translated his industry VFX experience into a short unlike anything we've seen before. From a jokey premise (what if you remade GIRLS using an aged-up monster character from SESAME STREET) comes this artful film of surprising pathos, which touches on themes of discrimination and self-respect. Utilizing traditional puppet techniques with state-of-the-art facial capture technology, this film is a winning combination of craft and storytelling.

MARTHA THE MONSTER
A See Pictures Production In Association with Goodman Brothers Productions & Casp Productions. Produced with the support of Screen Australia and Magenius
Produced by Jamie Hilton and Michael Pontin
A Film By Christopher Weekes
www.seepictures.net/
"Don’t judge a film by its thumbnail. Despite the cuddly, giant monster, this is no fluffy Sesame Street remake. Directed by Christopher Weekes and starring Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Insidious, X-Men Apocalypse) and Bobby Cannavale (I, Tonya, Ant Man), Martha the Monster is a light tale with a weighty message, exploring themes of identity, discrimination and self acceptance. With intricate puppets and VFX so good they’re practically invisible, the 15 minute short is also one of the most impressive productions we, at S/W, have seen in a while. Martha the Monster will take your inner child on an unforgettable ride, leaving you misty-eyed and warm and fuzzy inside.
Martha, a polite, orange-furred creature, is having an identity crisis. Living in a segregated community with her kind, she is unable to fit in either as monster or human, and all of her desperate attempts to be accepted are met with ridicule and cruelty. One fateful day, however, her whole outlook on life changes when Martha meets Kevin, a proud monster who’s not afraid to show the world exactly what he is-horns and all. You don’t have to be a genius to spot the symbolism in the film. When Martha is up on stage she is met with a rowdy crowd of middle aged men shouting “show us your horns.”
In Weeke’s world, monsters are considered an inferior race, cast away from humans. They are not allowed to drink alcohol or sit on the bus-an obvious nod to the United States’ past racist policies. However, the symbolism never gets too heavy-handed, nor does it swamp the emotion, thanks to the talented team in and behind the film. The voice cast is a knockout combo of Rose Byrne’s natural, softly-spoken delivery and her real life partner Bobby Cannavale, whose husky and seductive voice perfectly matches Kevin’s boastful character. The puppets are expertly made and the digital face work so subtle you might miss it entirely, but so effective you never question the monsters’ physical reality.
“I was massively inspired by the work of Spike Jonze, and was really drawn to the idea of a fun, colourful way of exploring what it’s like to blend in within a big city when you’re so obviously built to stand out. I had several years background in VFX before becoming a screenwriter, and really wanted to use this film to give life to monster suits in a way we haven’t seen on screen before. By blending a mix of facial capture with traditional puppet techniques, the hope was to use a little of the old and a little of the new to make these fantastical characters seem truly alive.”
The film completely absorbs the audience but also leaves plenty of elbow room for the imagination, precisely because Martha’s world is so real, despite it being inhabited by fantastical creatures. It’s an unjust and cruel world, driven by fear and prejudice. Sound familiar? But I love that its takeaway is a positive one, championing self acceptance, compassion and kindness. If these monsters can do it, surely there’s hope for us too…
Weekes is currently working on an adaptation of Craig Thompson’s BLANKETS for Screen Arcade and an animated musical for Village Roadshow. There’ve also been ongoing discussions about the possibilities of reuniting the cast and crew to turn MARTHA THE MONSTER into a television series." S/W Curator, Serafima Serafimova

Thank you for making this film! Martha is adorable and it was so gratifying to see her grow from shy and awkward to a little more confident and assertive. The suits and SFX were amazing and the monster designs delightfully inventive. All in all a great little film that brought me a much-needed smile this evening.

Sometimes, we have to go figure out ourselves on our own. Some might find comfort in hiding and there's nothing wrong with that. Sure, we might need a little push from others but they don't have the right to force you to be who you are. There's no rush. We all go on our own pace. When the time is right, you would know. But know that it will feel so liberating and free to accept yourself and what you are made of. A lot may try and condemn you or even shun you but the people who will accept you as you are just waiting amidst your surroundings. You might even be someone they could look up to. We are all monsters.

Probably some of you have already figure this one out. One thing I just notice in this film is.... Was when the blue monster’s blood was on Martha face, after she bit him for (self defense) and that one human who was terrified and said don’t eat me assuming it was (human blood) on Martha’s face, comes to show you humans and monsters both bleed red in that world and are not that different. I See it has an reference of we all bleed 🩸 the same ! 🤷‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

i normaly don't comment, but this short was so amazing i had to say something. I guess the short was based on the history of african americans in america (the busscene refrenced rosa parks). But it also made me think about how (only a couple years ago) not a single gay person was able to be themselfs. and it really made me realise how lucky i am (as a gay woman) to be alive in a time where i can be myself, and not have to hide my horns for anyone else.

I didn't like this very much. Martha didn't seem like a very likeable character. I felt like the filmmaker just created an unrealistic world where everyone is excessively mean to Martha, so that Martha can seem like an innocent victim. Watching this, I didn't see Martha as a hero, I saw the filmmaker as someone getting off on being a victim.

@@toniacollinske2518 Yeah, i don't see the whole "MeToo" narrative you're going for there, Tonia, especially when she shows her horns to everyone the following day, and is finally accepted by other monsters for it. Remember we are talking about "monsters" here, not actual people, so whatever boundaries they may have is completely unknown to us, considering the story doesn't really delve very deep into the reasons for why monsters are being discriminated against, however, i think it's important to note that some monsters are literal door mates in this world, which should tell us something.
