Please, listen many "Blue Notes" sessions, with Rudy Van Gelden, with his withe gloves, as Sound Sorcerer. With Miles, Thelonious, Milt Jakcson. The Sound of Bernie Gordie come from this guy, more or less..I discovered "Martha and the Vendellas" by...Chris Squire, Bassist and Founder of Yes. 5 years of "European Tours" as Bass Tech, 1999-2004. Many nights to talk Musics during many years. Finally, please also The Bass Solo of "Starships Troopers", Its a respectuous Hommage to "Bernie Gordy" Sound, James Jamerson of course. And Alan White, who played with Joe Cocker was reallly happy too. Martha and The Vendellas. A Pure Diamond.
Barbra Joan... did you guys have a "Hesitation Dance" in Jr. High around 1958 where the band would hold on one chord and everybody paused from dancing until the beat started again? Just wondering.. we had it in Ft. Worth, TX. Can't find anyone who remembers. Peace.
At the time it seemed it was destined to continue endlessly, without skipping a beat. It resonates today as though it had. Thank you HDH, Smokey, Funk Bros., Andantes, Maxine Powell and all the incredible singers. Thank you Barry Gordy for all the work it took to fulfill your vision of GREATNESS! 10/2019
I am 73 (today), I watched this video about a month ago,, and then went to the Martha Reeves website...at that time, Martha and the Vandellas were doing a gig in Shanghai...Martha was still cookin' at age 78. "Long live Motown; Long Live the 'Girl Groups' of the 1960s".
lol I posted this 2 years ago and YES❣️ I sure did get to perform this and quite a few others from our albums!! I’ll see if I can find video of that one. Hope you guys are still around! 🎤🎶🎸
If you were alive during the time this was played, you would remember how extremely popular it was and how often it was played on the radio. It was and is one of the very best motown sound. (A sound which will in all probability - never be repeated - sadly)
+Sheila6325 I think my dancing in the street was back in 1966? Is that when this came out? I had to come back and listen again. I loved it then, and I still love it now!
In The Navy, on a Communications Station in Greece... 1964-66. My girlfriend, back in Brooklyn, sent me this "45" and a friend of mine & me walked down the road, carrying a portable record player, playing this song over & over... trying to keep the player vertical and not skipping the record..Yeah... I remember this song! Thanks for the memories!
The amount of talent that converged to make this is unbelievable. Written by Marvin Gaye, who's also playing the drums, with Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter. The Funk Brothers just killing it. The Vandellas really delivering the vocals, and the moves! Especially Martha, look at that smile, that attitude. I even tip my hat to whoever directed the main video here, and the cameramen, who caught it just right. For my money, it doesn't get any better.
I spent my summer vacation with my aunt, uncle and first cousins in Detroit when this classic single came out in 1964 ...everyone was literally dancing in the streets!!!
I was a 14 year old kid back in '64 and as you were dancing in DETRIOT I was in NORTH JERSEY with my friends also DANCING IN THE STREET ....we had a lot of fun back in the 60's :)
Any place designated by blue on the election map by county. Fact: Palm Beach county in Florida, the home of Trump's Mar A Lago resort, it's one of them, too.
I was just sitting at the computer working, when this song came into my head. Not sure where it came from, but it made me feel so good, I had to stop work, and watch and listen to it again. It was great then, and it's GOLD now. One of the 60's very best records. Bless you Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. I was one of those white kids who didn't care (then or now) about the Beatles or the Stones. But give me Motown!
Without question - one of the Greatest Female Singing Groups of All Time - with their Signature Song - Dancing In The Streets - Just makes you want to Get Up and Dance!!!
This song brings back such memories! When I was a freshman in college, they closed off our street to traffic so we could get out there and dance! Of course they played this song! I grew up on Motown music and still love it to this day. Besides, this lady is my namesake...
I think this above the Bowie/Jagger version is the one that sticks to me the most. I remember it being on Freemont Street overhead led light show down town sin. city and they played this to a light show. Either way just timeless. GOD WHY CANT SO MUCH OF TODAYS POP BE LIKE THIS?
forever!! My son, since the beginning, learned to enjoy "my" music - one of his memories (he tells me) is watching me dancing all over the house when doing housework with this kind of great forever music playing.
I feel privileged to have lived through the 60's what a time that was. I know we had The Beatles etc here in the UK, but the Motown stuff - well it just blew me away
Oh God she's so great. Every time I see her perform she brings tears to my eyes. Her charisma is top shelf, her smile, her sparkle. There's nobody like her and never will be. Wherever you are, Martha, I love you! (and I love you too Vandellas!)
Girls gettin' down and funky. The best version ever. Martha Reeves... what a sweetheart!! GREAT SONG! you cannot beat 'the Motown sound!' The BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD,WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!!
And NOW get behind SOME campaign, local or national, and let's vote all these criminals OUT OF OFFICE! We need everyone to DO SOMETHING now/soon, AND then in Nov. vote for Dems throughout the ballot (this time it's critical!)
I love videos like this. People of different races sitting and singing together with no drama or racial tension. Music truly brings people together ❤️❤️❤️
Dance as manufacturing, farming and energy jobs go down the drain, illegals pour over an unguarded border, crime increases, morale is killed, chaos is rising? What a SICK mentality!!!!
You can never bet RAW SOUL of the 60s. Imitation is the best form of flattery. This is who we are when it comes to music. All of (or most of )the Rockers give props to this era of music and song. Careers were built on the backs of this form of music. Long live Motown and all the Motown's around the world. We rule.
I definitely remember this song back in the sixties. My household had this record and everyone in my household was playing this song. This is one of my favorite song. Dancing In The Streets!!!
This song is the perfect connection to some of the best times and memories in my life. It is amazing how much a song can remind you of a time, place or person. This is a favorite :)
I'll be 34 next month and I can't believe I remember this music. This is what my mom grew up on, but I remember her playing motown music. I'm a music junkie 😆 I love dancing, singing, watching and listening to music. I'm dancing now 😆 🤣
I didn't know this Motown group did this song. I thought it was Bowie n jagger, im only 37 born December 1981 so im happy to know now after being at Motown the Musical theatre show in Scotland . Such a great track to dance to, its hard not to want to move to it. Also thought that you cant hurry love was a phil collins song ,its the supremes. I stand corrected .soo much talent at Motown and soo much quality music . Michael Jackson still my all time favourite by a distance . Nobody excites me or moves me emotionally or to dance like MJ, the most special sweet man in my eyes and his talent was off the charts. I miss him, i love him. Ill take his music and memories to my grave .mj is a big part of my life and his music dance n message of love has made my life better. But a big thank u to all the Motown stars for sharing their gift and soulful music which was pure and tasteful, all about love n respect .peace ,lets continue to spread Motown n MJ for future generations to have quality soulful music
Get it aunties. Nothin nearly your caliber around these days. Love you all Martha Reeves... what a sweetheart!! GREAT SONG! Martha Reeves... what a sweetheart!! GREAT SONG!
I remember this song when I was three, growing up here in Detroit. I even remember the street parties. Man, it was fun. Every time I walk past the Motown Museum, a classic like this starts "dancing" in my head. 📀
This song is universal. So timeless & it still rocks. It doesn't who you are - from every corners of our Earth - it kinda makes you get up and dance :)
Like a time machine, every time I hear this song it whizzes me back to mid-Sixties Memory Lane. you cannot beat 'the Motown sound!' The BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD,WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!! Martha Reeves... what a sweetheart!! GREAT SONG!
Mannnnn I loved me some Martha Reeves when I was a little boy in the sixties, hahaha, hahaha. But I never knew until today when I was reading this article. That this was considered a protest song utilized by the Black panthers and H.Rap Brown at some of their rallies. Isn't it ironic that what this song was trying to convey way back then. People across the nation dancing in the streets, we ain't dancing but we're out in the streets together united trying to bring about change. RIP to all the fallen and I hope they are reaping the rewards of the martyrs that they are.
This was a staple in my youth in Cherry Hill, Baltimore City. Block parties, or an open truck went through the communities with a band or DJ in the 70s. Dancing in the Street, music 🎶 🎵 the BEST!
Martha & The Vandellas' music has me soaring through time - to my college years at the University of Maryland, College Park Campus. So upbeat and so happy; music to dance to! Those were happy years!
can't get enough of this video. Ms. Reeves and the sisters, the looks on their faces! sheer joy, incredulous how much this music moves all people! Where did it go?
I am so old! I went to the first Motown tour of the UK in 1965 I was 12 years and 364 days old, and this was what I spent my 13th birthday money on. Martha and the Vandellas were much better than the headlining Supremes, but I was there for Little Stevie Wonder. Blew my mind.
oh my god... does this take you right back to a magic time... those of you who are lucky (old :) ) enough to remember hearing this for the very first time... wow... --Mike
This was a great week for dancing in the streets. I went into the front yard and did the Snoopy Happy Dance! Neighbors looked at me like I was crazy. (I live in a red state).
Man! This is an awesome tune! I get goosebumps whenever i hear it! And yet it's a very simple, straightforward song but with an extremely catchy, feel good vibe to it. A real hymn to those amazing 60's. Thanks Motown for making our lives happier! :)
we will be dancing this summer ..LIKE NOBODY IS WATCHIN...THO WE WILL WIN AND WIN..AND WE WILL HUG AND LOVE EACH OTHER LIKE NOBODIES BUSINESS..LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE..AND WE WILL HAVE TONS OF IT!!!! WHOOOO HOOOOOO GOD BLESS AMERICA
The wonderful Martha Reeves, and The Vandellas. What a voice Martha has. Great song. This and "Jimmy Mack" are two special favourites of mine, and I listen to them constantly.
One of those iconic masterpieces that cross generational lines. Just listen to the chunka chunka bottom on this tune. Just outstanding. Sounded great over the booming am radio signal from WABC New York as a kid in the 60s.
Who remember this song by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas Dancing in the streets? 1964 I was 4 years old when that song was out. My favorite song and group.
