I recently read "You Never Forget your First: A Biography of George Washington" by Alexis Coe. Coe tells us that in her research for the truth about the Washington family, she learned that the rumor of Mrs. Washington having an affair with a British officer was started and spread by the British. Smearing the enemy by attacking innocent family members is nothing new. Also, I don't know what you mean when you imply that there is something amiss about the Washingtons entertaining officers at Mount Vernon. They were American officers. One more thing: Martha Washington did not free her husband's slaves. George did that himself, through his will. He may have wanted to free Martha's, but that would have been illegal.

It's shocking that Martha was a young widow? Not exactly, considering the state of medicine in her era. As for slaves, both Martha and George had them long before their marriage. Mt. Vernon now has lectures and displays about slavery on the estate. As for an affair? Not likely. She spent much of her time with George. Letters? It's too bad for historians, but a great many families destroyed their correspondence. The death of her children isn't exactly shocking, unfortunately. It happened a lot. Freeing her slaves? She couldn't have run her estate without them. Elaborate dress and furnishings? Her model WAS the royal courts. Martha didn't attend George's inauguration because women didn't do that at the time. Why would Martha's use of opium be shocking? It was pretty much the only painkiller available, in various forms. And now the video is complaining about her efforts to help her husband during the war, and the time she spent with him? I can't find a single shocking thing this post brought up. Martha appears to have been a model wife for George Washington, and an entirely reasonable model for a First Lady (although she was never called by that title.

Why do you have a picture of Victoria and Albert’s wedding where it should have been Martha and her first husband Daniel Custis

You know when they keep saying enslaved persons instead of simply saying slaves they are looking to pull a hatchet job on the subject.

The matter of slavery was/is nonsense. This was the way of life at that time. Washington did not like the institution and made plans to not only free but care for those being emancipated. He planned for the care of the elderly and ill and education of the young. To make ANYONE of that era somehow "responsible" for the ills of slavery has more to do with the desire to downgrade our country than to be "historic." Remember, the first man to OWN a black slave for life was a man named Anthony Johnson. He had purchased a slave who sued him in a colonial court in that he had only purchased him for a set period. The court found otherwise and the black man remained Johnson's slave. HOWEVER, Anthony Johnson was himself black and had been a slave but purchased his and his wife's freedom using money he had earned. Slaves could earn money and keep it for their use!

Hmm, now don't you wonder who captured Africans to be sold? They didn't magically show up on the shores when the ships came in. Oh, must have been their relatives or other African tribes. Great way to gain land and wealth when you send your neighbors and nearby folk off across the ocean. It's a one and done instead of continuous waring. It wasn't right but it is what it was and may very well have saved lives.

George Washington and Martha Washington truly loved each other and were devoted to each other. However, all biographies and documentaries must emphasize George Washington's greed, brutality, violence, maliciousness, and viciousness in his behavior towards the African people being held as prisoners at Mount Vernon plantation. The field workers were never paid for their work, were forced to work six days a week and under horrific conditions. The cabins they lived in were small and had no ventilation. George Washington often times beat and whipped the enslaved people (including women) and frequently separated and destroyed family members from each other until George Washington died. Hecalso spent three years chasing and harassing Ona Judge after she successfully escaped from George and Martha Washington. He was a bad choice to be appointed President of the United States.
