After the Korean War began in 1950, the U.S. Air Force looked for a jet-powered medium bomber to quickly replace the aging, propeller-driven Douglas B-26 Invader. In March 1951 the USAF contracted with Martin to build the British Canberra in the United States under license. The Martin-built B-57 made its first flight in July 1953, and when production ended in 1959, a total of 403 Canberras had been produced for the USAF.
In 1965 the USAF sent two B-57B squadrons to South Vietnam. Until the last B-57B departed in November 1969, the 8th and 13th Bomb Squadrons flew many different types of missions, including close air support and night interdiction, in all combat areas in Southeast Asia.
The aircraft on display was assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, as a test aircraft in the early 1960s. It was returned to combat configuration to replace combat losses in Southeast Asia. Assigned to the 8th Bomb Squadron at Phan Rang, South Vietnam, in 1967, it flew in combat there for 2 1/2 years. After returning to the United States, it was converted to an electronic countermeasures EB-57B. It was flown to the museum in August 1981, and restored back to its Southeast Asia War bomber configuration in 2010.

The English Electric licensed, Martin built B-57 Canberra is one of my favorites. And it's still flying for NASA!

Wife and I watching NCIS, a show about Fake Moon Rocks. I saw my very first Moon Rock inside the newly built museum main hanger, 1969/70 (?), it was inside a protected steel and glass cabinet with 2 of the largest Human Guards I'd ever seen on each side of it.

That bird had the M-39, 20mm cannons on board , 2 in each wing.....I re-plumbed soooo many of those guns between Sept 66 to Jan.68 at Phan Rang AB! 8th/ 13th Tac. Bomb Squadron. The big ''Operation:Rolling Thunder '' had all of us very busy on the flight line! Some of those work horses had 8 .50 cal.s and they could spread a lot of API rounds down there on the deck ! Gen. Chuck Yeager was the 405th Fighter Wing Commander back at Clark AB but he flew about 100+ missions in the B-57 ! I found out that fact when my Son bought me his autobiography for Christmas back in 1984+/- . I met Chuck Yeager later and his comment was '' that was an interesting aircraft '' . ''

I was at Phan Rang the same time durning Tet. I was a jet engine mechanic, I did all the trim pad work. So my name is in the log books of that aircraft. What a sweet airplane the B57 was. I did go to Clark for B57 training.

Beautiful bomber! I saw the NASA research Canberra flying out of joint base Lewis/McChord a couple months ago. It’s impossible to mistake those engines for anything else in the inventory today. NASAs big barn door wings haven’t spoiled her classic looks.

We used to have a squadron up here in Battle Creek back in the day, I hear. There was a silver one on a pedestal in front of the air base for many years, but I think they replaced it with a A-37 Dragonfly or T-33?
