A brief excerpt from "The Air Conditioned Eden" - a u.k tv documentary (circa 1998 -part of the "Without Walls" documentary series) which examined the "Tiki" pop culture phenomena of 1950s America. This excerpt is the only part which focuses on music - other subjects covered are interior design, architecture, fashion, food & drink. I have uploaded the full documentary (in 2 parts) elsewhere on this channel.

I had no idea I loved denny's music until I realized he was the composer of all my spotify music lol

I love his earlier, tropical jazz stuff. He was a magician, who set such a tranquil mood through his music, and would transport me back to a past life in Polynesia. And present day Hawaii, as well, as I lived there for years.

I met this man. I was playing piano at the Kahala Madarin at the lanai in front of Hoku's back in the early 90's and he came in for a drink. He asked if he could play a tune on the piano. I'm glad I let him. He was in his 80's and played great! I learned later that it was Martin Denny. He unintentionally made me look like a complete hack. Oh well, it's not so bad... I was beaten by a legend!

My parents had the Exotica album when I was a kid, and it really enhanced my music appreciation. I'm playing guitar and singing, now. I wish I could have met Martin. I lived in Hawaii back in the 60s-70s. One of the best pianists around. And such beautiful music! RIP.

Perhaps there’s more of this documentary somewhere but I find it peculiar that Les Baxter, who invented exotica is not mentioned.

I like Martin Denny’s music but it really does irritate me how much Les Baxter is overlooked. Denny had a huge hit with Quiet Village, but that’s a Baxter song! (And Baxter’s version is better if you ask me.)

@@devinmccanna645 I agree and also don't like how Les Baxter has been overlooked. Most people don't seem to know who he is or what he has accomplished in his innovative approach to music. A few here and there know him solely from "The Poor People of Paris", a hit for him in the mid-1950s. I was one of those people until I burrowed deeply into his music and discovered the magic of his unique approach to his uniquely beautiful arrangements of his compositions.

Wow! He was way ahead of his time creating Lounge music, I mean real sound effect lounge music, not like the current electronica mix stuff done on ProTools.

Denny did a cover theme title song for the 60's T.V. show "James A. Michner's, Adventures in Paradise", that tune is on one of his albums and is a truly beautiful composition!

Which one? He even said it was multiple cultures. I’m impressed that he sought out musicians that weren’t white.
