Martin HAGN: Gun Making At Its Best

A brilliant gunmaker and designer, Martin Hagn was one of a kind. A free and independent thinker, I had the privilege of working with Martin to design a unique falling block double rifle which you'll see in this video. Hagn's falling block rifles, and any other rifle he made, were beyond beautiful. He was a master gunsmith like no other. It is not easy to find exceptional intelligence, artistry, training, determination and completion in one person. Enjoy this rare look at Martin Hagn. He will be missed.
BTW - the remains of the hunter on the ledge was several hundred years old, not several thousand. His DNA has been matched to certain First Nations People.

I have a Hagn I built on a medium action I bought from Ralf Martini at a gunshow in Reno years ago. Mr. Hagn was there and I met him...very nice man. I met him again in Reno a few years later and showed him the finished gun chambered in 7x57 Mauser. My finish work could not compare with his, but he was impressed with what I had done. Again, excellent character. The gun will do anything it needs to. I have killed a few pronghorn and mule deer with it. Now, if I can just draw a sheep tag we would make Martin proud!

I spent many of hours chatting in person with Martin when he lived and worked in Cranbrook, even though he worked on very high end and very expensive work, he still made time to do some work for me and charged modest labour rate. He loved to talk about Canada and Elk hunting. His machine shop was outstanding.

No doubt, a great insightful story about one of the worlds greatest custom gunmakers and the end of an remarkable era! I’m one of Martin’s former colleagues and used to work-in, together with another colleague (Chris), who was there apprenticing, with both Martin & Ralf Martini in Ralfs workshop for about 4 1/2 years! I think I’ve met you at least on one occasion once, but not quite sure if it was in Martin’s own workshop or earlier on in Ralf Martini’s workshop: could even be at the ACGG @ Reno/NV, which event I used to attend with them for a nr of years? I used to visit him at his place regularly: lately usually mostly with my wife during the weekends, as I have my own shop to attend to, not too far from his in Cranbrook! He was a great guy: him and his family actually became close friends of us, were we shared many wonderful times during mutually shared lunches & dinners over time! Went out hunting with him several times: twice hiking up to his beloved cave and could tell you a few colourful stories about these occasions! It’s been nearly a month since his passing and we all miss him dearly: his passion for his work, passion for guns overall, his funny quirks & his down to earth humour! Again, he’ll be missed by all of us; sincere condolences to his family & waidmanns heil!

I was dismayed to learn here of Martin Hagn’s passing. In 1987 while living in Cranbrook I needed a peep Sight on my one and only rifle, a model 94 Winchester 30-30. Somebody gave me Martin Hagn’s name and I ended up at his door with no idea of his accomplishments and stature as a gun maker. He happened to have a Used Williams peep sight in his shop and agreed to install it. It sits on my 30-30 to this day and shoots straight and true. I remember Martin Hagn’s as a humble, straight up man. I’m sorry he’s no longer with us. Thank you for sharing a part his remarkable life story!

Hi Mike I could listen to your discussions on rifles endlessly and especially these Hagn as one can clearly see what the association with this firearm genius meant to you. You also made kindly mention of Don Allen who made several rifles for me back in the day. I had several memorable visits to Sturgis and was always enthralled by his personal inventory of best grade wood etc. I still have a new unfired (other than U.K. proofed) AAA walnut stocked rifle in his proprietary 330 Dakota an excellent round for deer through dangerous. I previously did several safaris with a Bastogne walnut one which he built and I 😢fell in love with the calibre, but sadly lost it, courtesy of Air France somewhere between CDG and Windhoek, hence had another built and imported, but the untimely demise of a hunting friend of 46 years influenced my decision to cease. As always, we look forward to more of your discussions.

Thanks for taking the time to write. Don was taken far to early. I remember the many conversations with him and (from memory) Ward and Norma was usually in the background or maybe not. Yes - guns disappear in international travel; I've heard from a few people; not good but it's mostly the airport helpers. They help themselves to things. The 330 is such a fine cartridge - unfortunately not well known now. There is something about having custom guns made - such a fantastic lift and so interesting and useful; and valuable - I hope you return. Anyway, have the best Christmas!

Mike When you publish your book on these rifles I would love to have a copy. If I had a good set of drawings or at least an exploded view I think I could complete one of these. The Henry and the Remmington Hepburn also had angled firing pins. The Hepburn That I had in 32-40 often got the firing pin stuck in the fired case but it would often reliese if you snapped the hammer again. The Hepburn had a lot of other problems and I felt that it wasn't verry well thought out.

The falling block is very much associated with the 'one shot kill' approach to hunting. One carrying such a rifle has to be a sharp shooter, but more than that, a discerning shooter. To think that there should be a second round in the rifle makes this whole sacred approach redundant. Perhaps it should still be construed as a one-shot rifle with a choice of bullet weight. One barrel for the 150 grain and one for the 180 grain, --- but you can't shoot both...! Hi, Hi! ... Again, Superb presentation of Picasso-level creativity and skill.

ive never seen a finer falling block and im betting i never will. ive ben looking at alot of old Japanese swords lately blades that wer made between 1330 to 1680 give or take and its a reminder that these things can last alot longer than we can lol..in 600 years that rifle should be in the national treasure category! the same as fine swords from the kamakura and nambboku-cho era now designated as important cultural artifacts and some even receive national treasure status. i keep an eye out because i can identify such swords even covered in rust and i hope to find at least one more i can afford to rescue.. btw that rifle in 45acp might just be the coolest single shot on earth! and it would pair perfectly with my 1942 colt m1911a1. the 45acp is my fav lil cartridge!

Truly fine firearms. Closest I have to a falling block is a number of lever actions, the lever being the only similar piece. Your jacket caught my eye too. Looks traditional Bavarian or Austrian. I have something similar but in grey wool. You aren't by any chance sporting a pair of lederhosen under the desk? Interesting that Mr. Hagn resided in Cranbrook. It's a bit of a drive from where I live in BC but I've been through there several times on my way to Kimberley.

: ) - no lederhosen under the desk - only in the closet. Cheers.

Harry Seigfried was a great designer but little known. Some of his accomplishments were the micro motion trigger in the 52 Winchester. At High Standard the sentinel series of revolvers. At Ruger he did the .44 magnum carbine in 1966 fallowed a year later with the Ruger 10-22 Also at Ruger the Security Six revolver that is quite similar to the HS Sentinel revolvers, At Ruger, this also applies to the Red Hawk series.

I hope that the Hartmann & Weiss rifles built on the Hagn action will continue to be built. Rigby is building Farquharson rifles.

I think H&W will keep going with Hagn and Heeren; maybe others. The Rigby is fantastic.

The deer are not getting smaller, but I've seen elk shrink right before my eyes as they strolled across a park that was too far to shoot.

Pretty little rifle; I'm not sure what the twist is - you're right - probably for lighter bullets. Cheers
