Martin high! A name us pentaholics are well aware of! A certain trio went there! At one point scott points to the teacher and says something along the lines of "learned everything I know from her". Pretty sure kevin learns the beats similar as how the others learns the notes or a dummer learns or a dancer. Repetition, baby!

Scott, Mitch and Kirstie went to this high school. It is a public high school which happens to have an excellent fine arts program. Their bands and choirs are consistently some of the best in the state. The odds of having one person as talented as them is pretty low, the odds of two is even lower, three of them in school at the same time is like winning the lottery low. Pentatonix had the acapella choir from this high school open their Christmas concert in Grand Prairie (a town right next to Arlington) Thanksgiving weekend 2018. As a drummer when you are learning a song you try different things to see what works. You do eventually go with what works best, doesn't mean you don't do it a little different (not drastically different) live.

Ooh, one I have never seen before. The first song/mashup they sing (As Long As You Love Me/Wide Awake) is from the "sit down with a mic" days, and is one I have been trying to get people to react to for a while because Kevin is just wild in it with the rapping & beat boxing at the same time.

Always nice to see some Babytonix and marvel at their talent. Did you notice Avi’s overtones in the second song? I’d love to watch you react to more of Avi’s music, and suggest “Floating on a dream” and “Aberdeen”.

Silly boy, of course he uses memorized beats just as any drummer. They actually start with him laying down the beat to construct the songs. Then bring in the base, then harmonies, finally the main vocals. Not sure if you’ve seen the video of them explaining that in an interview. But with the thousands of PTX videos you’ve seen it’s ok if you saw and forgot. 🤭 I was in a band for years and as backup percussion (tambourine and maracas) 😂 I improvised a lot. Everyone else stuck memorized parts with ad-libs. Love reactions. 🤗💋🥰

Avi is writing new music but there is still many that are out there you haven't done. Would recommend Full moon, It knows me, Quarter pass four, or Song for the thankful.

I think you're right about Kevin having everything memorized. I mean, if a Yale Graduate who speaks fluent Mandarin and can beatbox and play cello at the same time can't do it, who can? I've thought about this. They make music. Music can be written down in musical notes and lyric sheets. I can't read them, but they can. It isn't much of a stretch for the beatboxing community to have translated all of the sound effects into symbols. That way, Kevin can just read a part, memorize it like you and I memorize lines of a song, and perform flawlessly when it's his turn.

I just looked this up and there "kinda" is some standard notation for beatboxing but it's quite nascent at this point. My guess is that Kevin and Adam and Layne write each of their notations differently but there's a common ancestor within the "language". If I'm guessing correctly, we're still on the bleeding edge of vocal percussion as an artform.

My understanding is that they don't write anything down; they make video recordings and go back to those when they need to hear something that they don't remember. That might have changed over the years. There are videos where they are just goofing around where Kevin makes up the beat on the spot. He usually starts with whatever the standard rhythem is for that song and freestyles from there.

I've seen live versions where the beatbox is different from the original. I don't know out of ease of doing a lot of beatboxing in public or if Kevin's constantly improving and changing.

D, as far as I can tell this is the first time you've seen their original song "Love You Long Time". Pentatonix has an audio only video of this on their channel. It's one of their first originals and I LOVE it. Please react to the audio only video, there's a lot of ear candy in there that you just can't hear from this phone recording at the school. The produced version is fire. Having said that, I wish I had been in that audience, WOW!

I've seen some new reactors saying that they can't be as good as they are, because they must be using auto-tune. Those reactors have been ripped to shreds in the comments. I heard that, and just laughed, didn't bother to comment. The sheer number of videos of ptx, without mics, yeah, auto-tune that, please.
