In the autumn of 1997, Saturday October 4th the BBC introduced a brand new logo to coincide with the launch of the new digital channels.
The new logo was designed by Martin Lambie-Nairn the creative solution was to abandon the angled logo in favour of upright boxes, using the classic Gill Sans typeface and scrap the lines underneath the logo. Lambie-Nairn said, "the slanting logo always looked uncomfortable when used with other BBC brand names.
Martin Lambie-Nairn created and relaunched some of the most renowned brands in the world including Channel 4, O2, the BBC and the Royal Opera House to name but a few. Long regarded as the foremost TV designer of his generation, he is the recipient of numerous awards including a BAFTA, Gold and Silver D&ADs and the D&AD President's Award for outstanding creativity. He is now Creative Director at London branding agency, Heavenly and overseas all of their creative output.

RIP to Martin Lambie Nairn one of the best designers of some of the channel's iconic television idents.

Personally I always liked the BBC logo prior to Martin Lambie-Nairns redesign, but that's not to say I don't like his work! In fact, I would've been happy in the Virtual Globe (like the 1991 '2' idents) lasted until 2001 as well but with the new bbc logo at the bottom. I guess the fluted '1' was just a bit too bold in contrast to the new work which is why it was replaced with the balloons. The less said about the dancers the better! RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn; you pretty much defined TV graphic design from 1982 onwards! Shame too many idents these days rely far too heavily on live action.

Idents have reached an all time low now. The channels themselves have lost their identities. ...guess they reflect the fact that terrestrial audiences are mostly safe, retired people who just want something on in the background. MLN’s work was perfect for its era and irreplaceable, but so was that time in British broadcast TV.

I think the STV idents is a mixture of both live action and graphic design

@@interstat2222 That's a fair point actually. As the boomers firmly head into retirement and beyond, they are the primary broadcast tv watchers. But the landscape has changed dramatically. In the 90s to early 2000s, my main forms of entertainment were broadcast tv, videos/dvds and video games. Now add streaming and social media on top of that and tv gets watched less and less by post boomer generations. And of course the idents reflect this.

@@whatamalike I definitely think so (and from stealth market research from those I know) -- along with the programming. The rot set in with 'too many (crap) channels' in the post OnDigital Freeview which just wanted to say it had lots of channels vs quality content... and then broadcast budgets (and identities/marketing) got spread too thinly. There's no need for them to push the boat out anymore... it already sailed to the American streaming/studio giants while their back was turned (remember how long it took the BBC to make iPlayer content stay longer than 30 days? Or Channel 4's complete mess of an ad-heavy app? Or Channel 5's entire 2000s identity crisis?). Sadly, broadcast TV is lost and has no intention of trying to win back mass viewers. Too many years of neglect. Even this year's Christmas TV (the one year when more were at home than ever!) ratings have been at an all time low.

Honestly, the dancers were still a very strong ident package when compared to the likes of Oneness that cropped up 15 years later... They weren't trying to top the Balloons (i honestly don't think any ident package could) but what they instead brought was a sense of unity and cohesiveness to the channel. A striking red colour scheme, a recognisable music motif throughout the idents and some pretty interesting glimpses into various forms of dancing suitable for various forms of programmes. They certainly weren't *outstanding*, but the Dancers were a bloody strong package and I wish more people would realise that

Without a doubt Martin’s creative team were honourable, I think the current BBC logo is now outdated rebranded in 1997, as up against the new ‘Reith’ typeface made it look rather sad and warm out. Music: 20:29 - 21:03 was by Grant and Anthony Sadler. 21:40 - 22:23 music was by David Lowe.
