Ben Johnson is in this, and he got cast via one question: Johnson had been in Shane (1953) and Brando asked him what he would've done differently if he played Jack Palance's part in that film. Johnson replied, "I sure as hell wouldn't have put on GLOVES before shooting someone--it takes too much time!" Brandon smiled and said, "You're in."
I crack up when Johnson kicks the fish off the deck. Plus the scene when he says Brando is too tired from playing on the beach with that jumping bean all night.
3:18 3:20 Seen it many times and never tire of it. An excellent western. All the performances are fine and Brando is excellent but so too is Karl Malden and Ben Johnson. It was very well received in limerick in a small cinema outside the main City by some scruffy kids on a dreary Saturday afternoon. It certainly made my Day.
Everyone know how great Brando's acting is, but it was Karl Malden that really blew me away. He normally doesn't play heavies, but his performance as the back stabbing sheriff was among the most cold blooded and powerful I've ever seen.
"Warlock" is another terrific Western that rarely gets mentioned, even though it should, and Kirk Douglas directed Western "Posse" has sadly been forgotten even though it's one of the most unique and interesting takes on a Western ever made.
I was staggered the first time I saw this film, showing one evening on PBS. Its in a class of its own. It's a great thing Scorcese & Spielberg did, restoring the film to its full greatness.
I can't believe this film is not classified as a classic. Brando's directing is nothing short of brilliant. Everyone in the film is believable, even the extras,watch and take notice. Obviously this is my favourite western of all time, I first saw it as a teenager, and I've been raving about it ever since.
I've seen this masterpiece upwards of one hundred times. Each viewing brings forth nuances l hadn't noticed previously. Marlon's genius is displayed in full glory. He didn't need Kubrick, he took on the reigns himself.
Saw it for the first time at of all places at a Drive-In Theater on a road trip from Chicago to Miami somewhere along on the way (Georgia?) with my cousin. Must have been 1965 or '66 and it blew us both away so much I never forgot this outstanding film, and how it captured the two of us that we would remember this film many years later when we tried to recall events from our long ago road trip.
I saw it too in ‘61 with my best friend. I was 10 years old and he was 11. We were blown away with the film. We were huge western fans and huge Brando fans. It’s still one of my favorite films.

I was just watching videos on this movie, including Scorsese’s introduction on it before it screened in New York. I haven’t seen it in a while, but it’s the movie that got me into westerns, and it’s still my favorite. Marlon Brando was an incredible talent.
No better way to see this than the way I did, on network TV--cropped, edited, commercial breaks and all--because I had no idea as a kid what to expect. I knew it was a Western and I'd heard of Brando, and that was it. It all unfolded in front of me, the betrayal, the ride for revenge, the lies and the traps laid for each other. I don't think I took a breath during the whole escape sequence. When I watch my Criterion disk now, I'm 12 years old again. People who think the New Western started with Peckinpah and Leone REALLY need to see this movie.
If we ever need to stifle AI all we need is Scorsese and Tarantino sitting across from each other talking about films. It might slow down AI just long enough...
I happened to see it for the first time in 1973, shortly after the release of Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid", and I immediately noticed at the time at least one significant scene the young Sam Peckinpah had been originally writing for "One-Eyed Jacks" that clearly resurfaced 12 years later in his own movie about the legendary Billy character.
Marlon Brando's acting and directing performances in One Eyed Jacks are phenomenal and Scorcese was talking about the production length for the film that was the main reason Brando never directed a movie again because the whole ordeal completely exhausted him, remember he acted in the film as well as directing it and not all people are Clint Eastwood who can act and direct almost all of his films plus the director also oversees many of the post production tasks including the editing and the cutting of the picture. Brando was also a difficult actor to work with because he was weird and controlling as well as being extraordinarily talented in fact that's why Paramount didn't want Coppola to cast him in his would be legendary performance as Don Vito Coreleone in The Godfather because he was difficult and inconsistently unpredictable they would rather have had the legendary director Orson Welles as Vito ( Welles was the studio's prefered choice). This film is extremely underrated because many people don't like westerns and older films that much and Brando starred in much more iconic films or at least well known films than this one but One Eyed Jacks is still one of his best films and I have it in my personal film collection and I definitely recommend it.
One of my favorite westerns. Great characters and location filming. One line I always remember is when Rio (Brando) calls deputy Lon (Pickens) a "Gob o' Spit."
I saw this film on its original release when I was 12 years old. Even then, my 12-year-old brain told me “this is the most beautiful film I have ever seen.” Yes, it had a very troubled production history, but when all is said and done, what we have left is the end product: an absolute masterpiece.
Can we please get MARTIN SCORSESE on his movie THE COLOR OF MONEY and the amazing opening credits where martin is the one doin the dialogue. Amazing! 🤜🤛
One Eyed Jacks is one of my top ten favorite Westerns. Great cinematography and great acting by Malden, Brando, Slim Pickens, Ms. Pellicer, and Ben Johnson. A tale of angry vengeance that has a redeeming turn at the end.
Fascinating commentary Mr Scorsese’s perspective on the mechanic of the film & its inspiration compell me to see this film hope to find some additional commentary by for other films
I'm saving this film for a few more years. I've burnt myself out on too many things too quickly, so I space things out more now when I find something special. I've watched most of his films over the last 30+ years. There's still a few waiting.
I have the feeling, the movie, originally being 5 plus hours long, that missing footage was in the prison. Notice the cut between when he was captured and his escape. Like something was missing in between those cuts. Just a guess.
Yeah, the copy you see it on is extremely important to this film. The last time I saw it here on RU-vid the copy was trash and it didn’t hit me like it has before. There’s certain movies that print quality is huge and that’s one. I wouldn’t have thought that was the case before watching it, which is why I went ahead, but it was. Ran is another film where if you don’t get a good print don’t bother. I rented a copy from the library with muted colors, it wasn’t criterion to say the least, and it dulled the entire experience
Even as a kid, I knew this was a great film. Check out Anthony Mann's "Man of the West" with Gary Cooper, Lee J. Cobb. Fight scene between Cooper and Jack Lord one of the best ever filmed.
I loved this film and saw it many times when it first showed in Hollywood. I have a dvd but sadly no player. Only Visconti Has made equivalently beautiful films. And perhaps Bernardo Bertolucci.. Brando uniquely talented. 🎭🏆 🎥 ❤ 💥
I love this film and have seen it perhaps four times. Great dialogue by Brando. Beautifully shot. I do think it could have used some editing. It's probably a bit longer than it needs to be although I'm not sure what I would cut. Maybe shortened the hand rehab section that takes place in the fishing village near Monterey. Still, an awfully damn good film!
According to the movie's legend, the fishing village scene was when the hours were cut out of the supposed five hour version. There was a whole subplot and characters while he healed that hand. Like, a whole second movie within the movie! That's what we want to find to see the supposed whole thing. Cheers.
I know Brando had a penchant for making wild suggestions on the films he acted in. I'm really curious what happened when Brando had control. Got to see this.
Well the studio interfered with Brando's original cut so we never got to see Brando's full vision. Karl Malden who starred in the film as the antagonist, spoke reverentially about the Brando cut.
Quite a background narration to this film. It certainly is a great and unique western. Been one of my favorites since first seeing many years ago. However, don't get at all the Billy the Kid comparison.
Brando did another movie, Viva Zapata, which also did not have a clear hero with good & bad clearly drawn. In Viva Zapata he becomes the evil he fought at the start. He is the tarnished hero, who gets his comeuppance.
The squillionaire entertainers who aren't complete psychopaths surely have some appreciation for their art form, and they should take some pride when they use their resources to preserve it and conserve it and encourage it, because a lot of fans are grateful, even if they don't know it. Both theys.
Mr. Scorsese sort of lost me with his in-the-trees (IMHO) take on Eyes Wide Shut, but has been winning me back ever since. And with this, finding out he's a fellow VistaVision fan and hearing him gush. I'm only halfway through and am in the process of becoming a huge fan, you can just hear the enthusiasm in his voice for the art form.

I thought when they drew cards to see who would go for help, Malden should have drawn a one eyed jack card. Why didn't the writers include this? I thought this simple act would have elevated the movie even more Hightstown
Good flick, sad that Karl fearing retribution didn’t weigh in with his wife and more his daughter and her interest, fear won out. Malden was well suited for the role, Brando made a good choice.
I saw One Eyed Jacks when it came out at a theater in Chicago. I thought it was really good. There was no hero. Everyone was bad, actually. Brando was a thief, or worse. Malden was a thief, too, but his betrayal of Brando made him scum. It was unlike normal westerns which had good & bad starkly drawn.
Dustin Hoffman does more for film making as Ratso in Midnight Cowboy when he hits the NY cab impromptu than the entire One Eyed Jacks film directed and staring Marlon Brando. Like the Searchers starring John Wayne, I can not watch One Eyed Jacks all the way through. It is like eating an ice cream sunday without the ice cream noting but candy and syrup.
A very, very bad film. Brando liked himself on film too much. It was a poorly designed film and the scenes were very, very melo dramatic. There is a balance in a good film. This film does not have balance. It does not have any sense of noir. It proceeds in a scene by scene way that does not work. I liken this to a John Wayne color western. You can cut together the 'Searchers' and 'One Eyed Jacks' and possibly create a good film. Thank god for 70s film making. BTW, Scorsese used to make good films but he is a poor film critic. Go home little man!
@@vicclein Watch it again and think of the schematics behind the scenes and within the film the film itself doesn't make the movie iconic it's how and why it was made as in the case of The Godfather (1972) the production and the making of the film is just as good that's why the best picture award at the now woke infested Oscars goes to the producer not the director. Watch it again and think on that.
Interesting. I'm one of the few that doesn't care about Casablanca. Saw it once and that was enough. Never an Ingrid Bergman fan. Also thing Some Like It Hot is just too damn silly.
