Please note that there are SPOILERS for 'The Departed' this tribute
What an exceptional director this man is. Often referred to as one of the greatest American filmmakers (which he is), Martin Scorsese is amongst the most passionate and fearless directors working today. Why fearless? He's not afraid to try new things. His genres can range from a violent crime film like Goodfellas or Casino, to family oriented love letter to cinema like 'Hugo.' It's undeniable that Scorsese knows how to make a damn good film no matter what genre or style. With this installment of 'The Works' I tried to focus on the tonal range of Scorsese's feature films along with the recurring themes that surround them.
Who's next? Here's a hint: Toothpick

I have watched this very video consistently since I was 16. 1:25 's "Ha!" has always given me the big chill. Your videos were a big part in my recognizing of directors through their work, later even beyond your videos. These 4 years were the time I took educating myself on film and deciding for a filmmaking career. I am now finishing my first screenplay, and onto directing it, very soon.

Personally I believe lolita is one of Kubrick's underrated films along with The Killing and Barry Lyndon, I say that about lolita because the film was great for pointing out what monsters love makes of us, I have never went from loving the characters to absolutely hating them as they were built up and then torn down into shadows of themselves and the movie made me feel multiple feelings throughout the film, which is pretty common in Kubrick films. He was the master, no doubt about that...
@The90slim90
@The90slim90 11 лет назад
I think Lolilta has a great story, great acting and is shot great. Kubrick did a great job on dealing with the subject in a time when it was very difficult to do so. I must confess that I actually haven't seen Fear and Desire. Maybe it's because Kubrick himself doesn't consider it to be good. The other ones are masterpieces in my opinion, but I don't want to bother you with going in dept about Clockwork and Full Metal Jacket.You didn't mention some of his other movies, do you like them?

I finally did it. I watched New York, New York. It was long, frustrating, I didn't understand why Jimmy and Francine were attached to each other, and some of the songs were overdone. However, I did like the realtionship between the two main characters, the acting from the leads(especially Liza), some of the musical numbers, the comedy, and the 40's feel and scope of the sets. Overall, it was watchable, which is more than I thought it would be. But it is my least favorite Scorsese film.

@mickymuddle jackson is good and specially very skillful director...but it is nowhere near of scorsese mastery and versatily...scorsese goes from "TAXI DRIVER", TO "THE KING OF COMEDY"( great underrated film, scorseses best), "RAGING BULL" TO "AFTER HOURS" (another great comedy), "GOODFELLAS" TO "THE AGE OF INNOCENCE", "MEAN STREETS" TO "THE LAST THEMPTATION OF CHRIST", "GANGS OF NEW YORK" TO "THE AVIATOR, "THE DEPARTED" TO "SHUTTER ISLAND", "CASINO" TO "HUGO"....

I agree on Eyes Wide Shut and 2001. And Barry Lyndon is indeed beautiful, it has become one of my favorites. You can't really compare Spartacus to his other films, since he went to direct it at the last second. I find it hard to decide which one is my favorite. But Eyes Wide Shut, Strangelove, The Shining and Barry Lyndon would be contenders.

@ornjoos how interesting that 5/6 of those filmmakers have already been done by keesvdijkhuizen (who heresjohnny1991 seems to be friendly with). Go check him out. The editing is as superb as this guy's.

and then there are those directors who only do masterpieces, like Stanley Kubrick, but Scorcese is also easily one of the best directors ever, and he queps doing good movies at his age!

YES!...they are master too (LYNCH, MALICK, POLANSKY,etc)....but FOR ME Marty is the Best. Future Masters could become FINCHER, WINDING, ARRONOFSKY, PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON,etc.....

The people who says that "the scorsese golden globes clip" was better....is because they cant accept that THE WORKS- MARTINS SCORSESE is the best montage of all!!!!!!!

OK! NO PROBLEM, YES, WATCH THE COLOR OF MONEY...IT IS NOT A BAD FILM....BUT CONSIDERING THE GREAT CARRER OF SCORSESE, THE COLOR OF MONEY IS ON HIS MOST "WEAK" WORKS!

great list!!!!!!.....THE KING OF COMEDY IS A MARVELOUS UNDERRATED FILM!.....Scorsese has made so many good and great films that make a TOP 5 is very short......
