Malick loosely quoted the Brothers Karamazov in the movie Tree of Life. Brad pit says, "Someday we'll fall down and weep. And we'll understand it all, all things” and in Brothers Karamazov, Zosima says, "we don't understand that life is heaven, for we have only to understand that and it will at once be fulfilled in all its beauty, we shall embrace each other and weep."
So glad I found this. The film stands alone. Not that there aren't some other great ones, but in my experience as a movie watcher there just isn't anything else "like" Badlands. For me it achieves something I wouldn't have thought possible: a fascinatingly amoral film that somehow leaves the viewer with a powerful moral statement. Brilliant.
This interview completely changed my life in ways I could have never imagined. It gave me my values. Because it recommended the reading of The brothers karamazov. And believe me, when I say that you must read it. It is so worthy. Thank you, Terrence and Martin.
befero So interesting he happened to mention that bc I'm in the middle of reading it. How he finished it in a week I don't know, but it's undoubtedly the most powerful peace of literature I've ever come across. As I read it I'm aware that (particular chapters) I'll have to read again and again, and will keep a copy of it all my life.
This is really interesting. He got the part in Badlands doing an audition for a commercial? Funny about Malick getting out of Hollywood after Days of Heaven. He did not make another film for something like 17 years.
