This video is from the Research Track of the 2018 GIA International Gemological Symposium. The Research Track presented the latest findings by Institute researchers and scientists respected across the industry and from around the world.
This presentation is part of the theme, Colored Stones and Pearls. Synthetic and treated colored stones and pearls are widely available. Although standard gem-testing equipment can be used to help identify these materials, the use of advanced scientific instrumentation is increasingly necessary. Country-of-origin determination for various species of colored stones requires documentation of visual, spectroscopic and compositional features, which are then compared to similar gem materials from a known geographic source. Presentations may include, but are not limited to, identifying natural, treated and synthetic colored stones, the characterization of colored stones from specific localities, and natural and cultured pearls.

Could anyone tell me if Asteriated (asterism) it makes the gemstones more expensive and valuable? or not. For example ..sapphire starr and ruby starr is most expensive than sapphire and ruby stone gem?
@mulhollanddrivehobo6910
@mulhollanddrivehobo6910 2 года назад
Yes it does at some point. I do believe that a very high quality star ruby or sapphire in small sizes surpasses a high quality ruby or sapphire, but on bigger sizes rubies def are more expensive.

I have in my possession numerous diasterated star apatites with well defined 6-rayed the stars only appearing in transmitted light, however, Unfortunately though, it is rather difficult to illuminate such stones when compared to a typical star stone, these stars only becomes sharply apparent when lit from behind, and, in general these stones show no epiasterism. I would argue that this phenomena may not be as rare as could be assumed by it's lack of discussion, and, as such many potential star stones may exist of this type, particularly in golden apatites from Durango as we're those I've encountered, and, most likely these potential star stones might have been overlooked due to the tendency to facet such apatites rather than cabbing, and, of those that have been cabbed appropriately, such stones may have not been observed under the necessary lighting conditions to display the phenomena.
