The heart and soul of Wishbone Ash. Without him they are a tribute band. MT's version sound like the original 70s band. You can - to a large degree - replace guitars (after all, how many have they gone through?!) - but MT's vocals and bass-playing? That can't be replaced.

What Martin said about Andy's version of WA is spot on, having seen them a few times I can relate to them not having the spirit of the original band. Always thought that it was more like music by numbers. Martin will always be what I think of as the true voice of Wishbone Ash.

Martin Turner really was an intrinsic part of WA. His voice was iconic and the band was never the same without him.

I've seen both "versions" of WA quite a few times over the last ten years and have to say that Martin's band is more reminiscent, for me, of the band that I revered from the moment I heard them in the early '70s. This was the first 'proper' band that I ever saw live, at Birmingham Town Hall and I still remember the feelings I had from that gig. A friend of mine queued araound the block for hours to get tickets for us and we managed to get second row seats; it was an amazing experience!! On top of that, Martin is a thoroughly nice bloke to talk too and took the time to autograph and dedicate a copy of Argus to my brother-in-law who missed our last gig due to illness and sadly died two months later. Many thanks, Mr Turner, for the years of happiness your music has brought me. I just wish I could play it as well after forty-some-odd years of trying. :-)

yes, I agree. Andy Powell may be is a fine guitarist and is very active in carrying on the sound of the band but for me as a band member and also have done Wishbone Ash stuff, I still prefer Martin Turner's singing over Andy's. . . Yes I like the present overall guitar sound of the band . . . . but Martin's vocals and Ted's guitar are far more superior for me . . . Benjie/Philippines.

What Martin says about Andy Powell playing WA with his guys is exactly what I feel hearing it. He makes decent albums though. But on stage it feels really poor and lifeless, especially the old stuff. I'm happy Martin came back to play it properly.

Wishbone Ash were Andy Powell. Martin Turner, David (Ted) Turner and Steve Upton, just like Barclay James Harvest were John Lees, Les Holroyd, Mel Pritchard and Stuart (Woolly) Wolstenholme. Anything else are just offshoots. Laurie Wisefield did a superb job of stepping into Ted's shoes. I enjoy still seeing Andy and Martin's versions, but prefer Martin's but each to their own. We should be grateful they are both active after all these years.

I went to a concert of Wishbone Ash in the nineties, and I was so surprised to see Martin Turner on stage (it was in the First Rock Café). For me, Wishbone Ash without martin IS NOT Wishbone Ash. Since he created Wishbone Ash with Steve Upton, I feel that it is a shame to be ousted from the band you created. Wishbone Ash being my favorite group since 1973, when I discovered them, I think that it is a big pity, both for the band and for us, when Martin no longer was with them, and the departure of Laurie Wisefield is another painful event. Steve Upton was such a great drummer! When You take off 3 members of a 4 members band, how could it be the same band?

when i was teen, i used to buy only live vinyl; so, for me, the real Wishbone Ash will be forever "live dates"; i saw then in august 1975 in Orange (France). good time to have 17 and a new bike to be free!

Great to see Martin saying how it is. There is no doubt his band is the authentic sound of the original band. Danny Wilson and Tim Brown are super fellas and Danny a couple of years ago went out of his way to help me as a fan of the band. Misha has come in following Ray Hatfield whose partnership with Danny was what Wishbone Ash is all about and has done well following a top class performer. Martin will always be Wishbone Ash to me he wrote Argus to me the bast melodic rock album of all time. I challenge anyone to tell me they have listened to it more times than me. It's a massive part of my life and was largely written by one man who wasn't Andy Powell. I rest my case there's some high court judge who should be ashamed of himself. He made the wrong decision there is only one man that can claim the name "Wishbone Ash" that's Martin Turner

I agree totally with everything you have said Andrew. I first saw Wishbone Ash in 1971. Even way back then I was sat on the floor in a ballroom absolutely mesmerised. For such a young band to produce such total musicianship at that age was incredible, I was smitten. I have followed the band, in their various forms over the years and grown old with them along the way. I loved the original band with Ted and Andy, and I don't think anyone would deny that Andy Powell is a wonderful guitarist and was a major part in that band, but I agree with you...I think he's been a very silly lad and even to the point of spiteful. After waiting with my tickets for nearly 2 years, we finally took our seats in Lythams wonderful Lowther Pavillion last night to watch Martin and his GREAT band finally complete the Pilgrimage tour. What a night, the band were on fire with both great musicianship, (so faithful to the real Wishbone sound), and of course Mr Turner's wonderful humour. I just think it is so sad that the founder has to call himself ..ex Wishbone Ash, in fact it is a disgrace. This band are far and away better and more true to the Wishbone Ash sound than Andy's. I will always remember and respect Andy as a guitarist, but long live the great Martin, Danny, Misha and the fantastic Tim Brown on those drums. Like yourself, Wishbone have been a massive part of my life since I was 16, and I am now 67. So glad I lived through those times, It was fantastic.

@@mozartsmate6358 It seems to be an ego conflict between the two. I've seen Wishbone Ash with Andy and they're a cool and positive band. Very good live and I can't say there's any negative vibe emanating from Andy. They just didn't agree on certain aesthetic directions and starting biting at each other. I don't think either of them is right, it's not good to go at each other after they've made such great work together. Seeing them in one band would've been great, they should put their differences aside.

@@tomwhittaker9461 Tom, I agree with what you say that these 2 should be playing together as Wishbone Ash. I remember going to see them in 1989 when the original band reformed, and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to ( and I've been to quite a few in my time ), they were on fire that night. What I do disagree with you on is you mention ego. Having seen Martin live and watched interviews with him, he certainly has no ego. To give just one example, Argus, which was mostly written by him and one of the best rock albums of all time, he introduces it on stage as the ARGOS album., Brilliant... Lastly, let's not forget that Wishbone was his creation and he, together with Steve Upton auditioned and gave jobs to Andy and Ted in the first place. More than anyone, Martin Turner should never have to use the word EX, in the title of his band.

There is only one Wishbone Ash and it's Martin Turner's amazing band. So what's in a name? The banter, atmosphere and feeling of Martin Turner and guys is second to none. We never tire of going to see them. Wokingham was another great performance last night. And they always look as if they are really enjoying themselves. My husband and I first saw them in 1973. Still best band ever for us.

Have to agree with Martin, Andy's band does not play with the feeling or tonality of the original band. On the other hand, the guitarists in Martin's band hits it pretty close to the original sound.

I saw Andy and his band a few years back and I had a great night. Really enjoyed it. I'm probably a lot younger than some of the people here but I enjoyed it for my part. Its sad to have two camps and all of that. I can understand people's perspective who grew up in 70s or werw fans from the beginning and so on but for my part Andy's been kind ,supportive and inspirational as a guitarist and musician. So yeah. I get where people are coming from here but I'm happy to go see Andy and his guys do their thing as well and I'm sure I'd enjoy it again . I kmow its different for me being younger (in my 40s) but I just thought I'd throw my hat in the ring with a little support for them. I can appreciate where people are coming from here though. I have that perspective with other bands where I was there at their peak and things have subsequently changed .

To me, there are so many favorite bands of mine, that they reach a point where disharmony takes over and the chemistry breaks down. Sad that this happens. Wishbone Ash always were (and are) a very precise band. The songs were set in stone, with not any room for any variations. Kind of locked in (no pun) to a vise. More freedom might have helped to keep things together. Off the cuff playing like bands that jam more. Cream, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, others like them. But, to counterpoint, those two bands didn't last long at all. So, who knows. WA forever !

Both Andy and Martin have really good musicians on board. But, the magic of 'the old days' are gone in both bands. I prefer watching the videos with Andy, Ted, Martin, Laurie and Steve.

Martin sounds like a bitter old man. He and Roger Waters both left the bands and no complain about being out of the bands. Wishbone Ash went on without Martin and have been successful without him. Harsh lesson in life...none of us are irreplaceable!

I agree Martin has to face the truth, Wishbone ash is Andy's band and his mithering on just makes me sad. I was a great fan of the original line up and before that I used to book Empty Vessels (Martin, Steve, Glenn). Exchanged banter with them in Dirty Dots cafe in Exeter and great times they were but to quote a song "Time Was." Rightly or wrongly Andy has carried the band forward, not Martin. I wish that the original line up would reform but that's not going to happen.

For me, Wishbone Four in 73 signalled the end of the best. First saw them at the Subs in Stroud & Bardsney in Lincoln in 1972 when they were at their exciting best. Steve Upton on the drums was another Ginger Baker sensation but then they fell apart in 74. I thought I'd missed out, until years later I watched performances on RU-vid, and realised they'd become a poor tribute band of the pre 74 originals. I still have my Wishbone, Argus, Live Dates & Wishbone 4 LPs & the CDs to fall back on & play in the car today. Always thought Martin was a brilliant bass, stretched as a singer. The sound, pitch & performance must track the originals.

I met Andy Powell in Dublin about 15 years ago in the Village on wicklow Street downstairs and i thought Wishbone Ash were a brilliant band Just Testing 1980 that was my first introduction and I bought a lot of albums so for me Thin Lizzy Deep Purple AC /DC Wishbone Ash they were the outfits I liked best

I dig Martin but he doesn’t have the charisma that Andy does! Andy is the best representation we can get now at this time of The band! Andy is in his prime and still has many more years and Martin is a little sluggish! I think They need Martin in the Studio for vocals to help make it even better! They need to get over there crap and make it work! But Martin is too sluggish for aggressive performances! He’s lost a step it’s nothing to be ashamed of! Andy is precise and on top of his game! Jump in there Martin and help out!

Never mind though, your excellent albums (1, Pilgrimage, Argus and New England) will live on! Sounds like sour grapes to me. I don't think Martin expected Andy to carry on and succeed with strong material and tours. Martin didn't believe in the band and left, and got bitter when Andy continued effectively. I don't understand people saying Martin is the soul when he didn't have enough soul in the band to believe carrying on in the first place. I saw AP Wishbone a few weeks back and it was still tight and a well oiled machine.

There would be no WISHBONE ASH without Andy Powell. Martin STILL gets royalties because Andy is out there keeping the music alive. Andy continues to keep interesting releases coming that also keep Martin in $$$$$. Sometimes it's easier to get rid of the problem (Martin) than deal with it. Yeah, Martin contributed a lot, but Andy kept it together when others could have cared less. It's interesting to hear Martin with his sour grapes... And, for me, Andy's WISHBONE ASH released an amazing album in 2020 titled COAT OF ARMS.. I'm not privy to what led to Martin's exclusion from the band back in 1980 but I can attest to the fact that I only bought one W.A album after he left. Without Martin's vocal and songwriting presence W.A was a poor relation to what came before. Having said that, Andy Powell has kept the name of the band alive in front of the public. He has also continued to release NEW music (of sometimes varying quality) over the decades. He deserves respect for that at the very least.

just ask Geddy Lee about singing other people's lyrics...he had no issue. Also the courts decided you left the band and, as Andy has continued to tour AND RELEASE ALBUMS some of which are very strong. Therefore i don't believe Martin can bare a grudge considering he is only peddling material 50 years old, and his latest album is hardly up to scratch. Sorry mate but morally Andy is in the right as he has continued to believe in the band that you abandoned.

Agreed! These young interviewers germing the old guy who can't hit the notes anymore. His bass playing IS a big part of the original lineups sound and feel but his new bands interpretations are wimpy and limp wristed and no where near the quality of the original players. If you're going to argue your version is better then you better be able to deliver the goods live! 🤨

Saw Andy’s band twice in past 7-8 years.The shows were good. Obviously the original band was best. I thought the vocals back then were superb. Andy, Martin , Ted & Steve blended well. I thought Andy & Ted’s twin leads were awesome. One thing bugs me. Andy & Martin have terrible teeth. Surely y’all can afford a dentist 😂

So, according to Martin, its not ok to sing vocals you didnt write because you cant do it with feeling, but you can use any guitarist to play the notes you didnt write and you can do that with feeling. This guy is so full of shit it is ridiculous. And Mart should re-name his band to No Service Dogs Allowed, because the dogs would start howling and make better notes than he does.

Misha is one of the nicest blokes I’ve ever met, so I don’t know why you would have anything nasty to say about him. Additionally, he’s an excellent guitar player who captures the spirit of early Wishbone Ash, so it isn’t surprising that Martin chose him. Danny and Misha compliment each other perfectly.
